Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

When you see that Jodie Foster declined them, it does ring alarm bells. Probably sound like I'm backtracking now, but Hannibal is perfectly watchable tbf, given Hopkins has such great screen presence. Red Dragon is better and worth watching from memory, although it was years ago that I saw it.
Hannibal is exactly that - watchable. It's not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, and people are a bit too stupid in it, but it's still rather enjoyable and a lot of it is set in beautiful Florence.

Red Dragon is a very good film though.

Never watched the last one, his origins I think.

Yeah agree with all that. I think it was the origins one that soured me on the sequels. They went to the well once too often.

TBf the book 'Hannibal' completely ruined the character of Starling (which is why Foster refused to do it). Not sure you can place the blame solely with the film.

Forgot that I watched a film I enjoyed a lot on the plane the other day, John Wick. Now the premise is perfectly stupid - a retired hitman goes after the Russian NY mob cos they killed the dog which was the parting gift of his deceased wife - but I think the film works very well. I could actually relate to Keanu Reeves' character to a certain extent, and then it just gets silly and violent and stuff. But it's enjoyable in a brainless manner, even though it gets a tad repetitive by the end. Still better than a lot of action films that pretend to have a plot and go through the motions, this just cuts through the shit.

I got the feeling that Harris was a bit fed up of his own creation by the time he wrote Hannibal, in much the same way as Conan Doyle tired of Holmes.

Excerpt:

*phone rings*

STARLING (thinks): 'Shit. I f*cking hope it's about PPI...'
HANNIBAL: "Hello, Clareeeece...."
STERLING: "FFS, not a-bloody-gain..."

I loved the first half hour or so, was great fun to see the over-blown fear when they realise they've messed with John Wick

It did get a bit repetitive tho like you said.

True. In fact the film is actually one of those rare examples of an adaptation changing the source material for the better. Though largely 'cos the source material went completely mental.

I thought the whole thing was a bit silly tbh and dull. The killing spree over the dog and the car (but what a car) and Keanu as wooden as ever. The emotional overlay of the dead wife plot line was a bit crap too. Not sure it gave Wick's character any more depth, which I presume was the intention. It appears they are making a sequel too...

You should try Splice, with Adrien Brody. It's silly B-movie Sci-Fi to feck.
No Mockney, that film is just awful. Sends shivers down my spine just thinking about how bad it was.

I guess I must've been in the right frame of mind when I saw it to enjoy it, and I agree it peters out towards the end, but I thought it was quite fun.

I watched it on a monster flight back from Bangkok. I pretty much hate most films I watch on a plane tbf. Probably cos my knees are rammed up against the chair in front and I'm bored and not in the best frame of mind.

Very true. The film did a decent job given the source material they had to work with.

I enjoyed it. I have a soft spot for One Man Army films though, having grown up watching the likes of Sly and Arnie wipe out hordes of henchmen on multiple occasions.
I enjoyed the way they kept him mysterious for as long as they did.

Gonna be a snob for this one, but the few films I watched last time I travelled were in business class with Emirates: the screen is very big and the seat is really comfortable, so it's great viewing conditions. Also they keep bringing food and booze.
... I'm going to side with the United fan on this one.

I'll give it a viewing this week.
Feck off AN!

Actually don't. Watch Splice, that will be punishment enough.

I don't actually fly business when I travel for myself, it's only when I'm travelling for work!
Yeah, I imagine everything looks better from a business class seat tbf.
Not so much 'looks better' but the viewing conditions are just more enjoyable, it's mainly the seat and the leg room (I usually hate flying, but it becomes just about tolerable in such conditions).

The Warriors

Really bizarre yet fun cult gangster film. Like someone decided to take acid and then make a mash of West Side Story and a GTA game.

8/10
Not seen that in years. Getting seduced by the Lizzies! Is definitely an underrated film, or at least less well-known that it should be.

I may watch it but I'm worried the perfection of 'Silence' will be somewhat ruined if I know what happens to Clarice's character in the future.

Yeah, you really need to treat them as standalone feels if you can. The sequels don't tarnish the original, they arguably reinforce just how good it is.

There's plenty wrong with it: some hammy dialogue, terribly choreographed fight scenes, and ridiculously unrealistic gangs...yet it's still bloody brilliant all the same!

I have a fascination for the gritty New York of the 70s/80s so therefore I highly enjoyed The Warriors because of its urban settings.

Bamboozled - Spike Lee (2000)

Satire on the black experience in film and tv and stage in cracker America. Some great stuff that is ultimately brought down by Lee´s heavy handedness and a totally unbelievable, crap acting Damon Wayans in the lead. Raises some important points as a historical document and just the dance and song performances make it worth the watch. Can´t go wrong with Savion Glover. The guy is an amazing dancer. Nice to see Paul Mooney in there, though not a big enough part. The Roots have a couple cameos as well. The film has some amazing old footage and fascinating old "negro" kitsch artefacts from the last century and before. For all its faults, its too bad more students aren´t exposed to films like this while studying history and sociology.

Anyone seen Child 44 and want to offer me a rating, can't see anything else much that I haven't already seen worth downloa... I mean going to the cinema for :nervous:

It's OK, 6/10. I'm not a big fan of hearing English spoken in a crap Russian accent, I'd rather subtitles, but the actors do a decent job. And Tom Hardy's always good.

Cheers mate, I figured looking at it it'd be about that

With you on the accents, whats the bloody point. Even worse are films where some of them are doing it and others aren't.

If you managed to sit through Colin Farrell's Russian accent in The Way Back, you'll barely notice Hardy's.

A Most Violent Year

Really enjoyed this. Despite its title, it's quite an understated, focused movie with occasional action orientated scenes. Oscar Isaac gives a really good performance. He's got an intensity and presence about him. Can see where the Al Pacino comparisons have come from. All in all, good crime movie. Manages to avoid a lot of the cliches a New York crime based movie can easily fall in to. Manages to have a fairly bleak tone without being too depressing.

8.5/10

The Good Lie

Enjoyed it a lot. It follows a group of kids who are refugees in the Sudan war who win a lottery to then relocate in the United States. Just a heartfelt story. Reese Whiterspoon is solid in a more subdued role as well. Thought the main actors were all great. Not gonna lie, this is the only movie that made me shed a tear and I've watched thousands of movies :D. A good watch. 8/10

I heard it was boring as hell.
