Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I appreciate that reviews are subjective, but have you considered that after giving, 90's Jim Carrey movie, Liar, Liar 9/10, you may have blown your wad a little early? I'm expecting a deluge of 10/10's in the coming month.
They're also relative (and completely stupid). You can give Liar Liar a 9 if you believe it's a near perfect film of its genre because your expectations are most likely not the same as going into a Kubrick film.

I don't give marks to films, but if I did, I'd most probably be doing it based on the genre and my expectations, which wouldn't mean that I believe that an 9/10 is necessarily a 'better film' (whatever that means) than an 8/10 of a different genre.

Urgh, I hated that film.
Same. I watched it on the back of the praise it was getting on here and thought it was terrible.
I thought it was great and quite thought provoking, I also agree it's a good example of a film where the aesthetics are way below the quality of the script (though that gives the film a certain charm, I feel).

The only thought it provoked in me is that if Jesus was alive today, he too would probably be a massive bellend.

But yeah, I didn't think it was nearly as clever, intelligent or thought-provoking as it thought it was... instead just found it to be a bit pretentious, an a really uninspiring take on "what if Jesus was alive today". Also, the acting is horrible... and I've not even mentioned the ending!

For a film thats in the "a bunch of people sat in a house talking" genre... something like Coherence blows it out of the water.

Me and Earl and a Dying Girl: Funnier and a better version of Fault in our Stars. Really a soulful movie and makes you feel for the characters. Some great subtle comedy way of dealing with life and death. 8.5/10

I thought it was an interesting idea poorly executed. The acting was indeed awful. It reminded me of something you might see on Channel 5 on a Sunday afternoon.

Nolan's Following? That Man From Earth film?

The fact you share this opinion with someone whose just given Liar Liar 9/10 should surely give you at least some pause for thought.

Woah hold on a minute son. I don't care for Prometheus at all, I was simply looking to get some discussion going. You could count Following, but that does have excuses for being poor visually.

 to the bolded part

I don't think all the acting was poor, but some of them were awful, yeah.

The main actor was very good IMO, with the others being quite shit. Still, the main actor did almost all the talking.

@Annihilate Now! , don't you love Primer? It has infinitely worse acting.

Primer has a strong enough concept to keep it going.

And by that, I mean it relentlessly keeps you so utterly confused as to what the feck is going on that you don't notice that two people actually wondered in off the street to act in the film.

I don't love Primer though, but I think it's good all things considered.

50/50 is such a great film. For a film which is about a young man with cancer it manages to be funny and uplifting without making the issue seem trivial and without getting too sentimental, it felt real and heartfelt. I was getting pretty emotional towards the end which rarely happens to me watching a film but credit to Gordon-Levitt and Rogen, they're both great in this and I really connected with Levitt's character. 9/10

Pixels

Why do I enjoy Adam Sandler films? Why when even more of his boys (Kevin James) does the film get better? Add to that Tyrion fecking Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and the nostalgia of 80s arcade games and it becomes the perfect mix. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 19%, IMDB gave it 5.6. Well, they can feck off. You guys can feck off too when you quote me hating on my review! Sandler's best film since Grown Ups. Back to his best!

7/10

Sicario - a great film from top to bottom. Villeneuve is the master of tension, Deakins the master of light and the cast are uniformly brilliant. I don't know how Benicio del Toro doesn't get higher profile work. Go see it. Blade Runner is in safe hands.
Great, I need to see this.

Does anyone know anything about the following?

The Wait
Truth
London Calling
Brooklyn

Been offered tickets to all of those, plus Beasts of No Nation (def taking these) at the London Film Festival. If anyone's seen any gimme a shout.

I watched 'Just Go With It' for like the fifth time last night. I just find it hilarious. I know most people hate Sandler movies, and I agree, most of his recent stuff have been dire, but when he makes a good movie, it pretty much sings perfectly to my humour tune.

Glad to see you enjoyed Pixels, I like Kevin James as well. Just not a lot of peoples' cup of tea I guess.

I never get the bad review. Surely people know what they are getting themselves in for before watching? It's like me watching 'The Notebook', or 'Fault in our Stars' (watched with the wife) which in my opinion were absolute shite. But I wouldn't actively try watch that genre and then go on to give it a bad review, because I understand those films aren't for me.

Wow.

I thought that film was the most cringe-making nonsensical pile of trash I've forced myself to sit through in a long time. Even by Sandler standards it was bad. You deserve a trophy or something.

I thought Following looked stylish. Man From Earth looked like a cheap TVM, though.

Dogville? Then again, it was different.

Some of it is cringey, not doubt, but the guy who pretends to be a German sheep herder cracks me up. The scene where is trying to resurrect the sheep has me in stitches every time

The boy he pretends to be his son is class too. Some of his lines are brilliant I think.

Love this scene, where they're slow walking. Stupid shit like that just cracks me up.

I have a particular sense of humour. I mean I love Vince Vaughn's style, and I know his comedies are hated by tons.

Just watched Catch Me Daddy(Out today on DVD & streaming) and well it's incredible. Must watch

I judge a film on what the film makers were trying to achieve and how much I enjoyed it.
This film is basically a showcase for Jim Carrey, that's what they were trying to achieve, and they definitely succeeded, to the enjoyment of many.

I don't really get that argument. Just because something is going to be enjoyable for a certain group of people who like it doesn't mean it's not bad, or should be exempt from criticism.

Granted, if someone is analysing an Adam Sandler film looking for existential themes and expert camera work which is symbolic of the protagonists inner conflict, then yeah, they're over-analysing what is supposed to be a fun comedy. But someone criticising his films for either being lazy, not funny, and generally lacking in creativity is fully entitled to do so, even if they don't like his movies.

For what it's worth, I don't even dislike Sandler's stuff that much, and have been able to enjoy a few of his comedies here and there, but it's hardly ridiculous for people who don't like him to slate him.

Really good film and one of the reasons Netflix is so great - I end up watching lots of films I never would've seen otherwise.

Fantastic performances from all involved and really enjoyed the characters portrayed by Rogan, JGL and Kendrick.

Yeah, this.

Surprisingly just watched Wolf if Wall Street recently. The usual over the top Di Caprio performance, lots of male testosterone and way too many tracking shots. Still, visually sharp and some clever Scorcesse dialogue (Along with a load of swear words). It also genuinely got me pumped up at times which is what I think it was trying to achieve. The scene where all the workers in the office bang their chest was oddly motivating.

Oh yeah, editing was shit though.

8/10

I usually stay away from sequels and it is with good reason as most are terrible.

Over the weekend I watched Dumb and Dumber To and Horrible Bosses 2. Both were equally shite. 3/10

I don't agree. Dumb and Dumber To was infinitely worse than Horrible Bosses 2. Both were poor, mind, but Dumb & Dumber To took shiteness to a new level.

Interesting. However, I don't do that. A comedy * or some brainless action cannot get more than a 8/10 in my scale, despite that they are supposed to be funny, full of cliches and brainless action. Yep, it is a shit genre so the movies will be on scale from shit to okay, but then so should be the grades.

* Dr. Strangelove being the exception. It is one of the 10 or so moves which I would give a perfect score. But then, it is so much more than just a comedy.

** Actually, 8/10 in my scale means 'a very good movie'. I am not sure if I have any comedy rated as 8/10 (probably the first Hangover). Same for brainless action movies.

Fantastic Four

Not as bad as I thought it would be. But then again not the movie I expected. Minimal action. The main actors/ actress were also very cold. They didn't relate or play off each other. Could have done with an extra half hour of them maybe training/ another scene of the four of them fighting together. There definitely was something missing but I do think this has potential. I wouldn't mind another film with the same cast. Who owns them? Fox? They also own X-Men right? Maybe use the thing for example in X-Men or get an X-Men cast member (Wolverine/ Hugh Jackman) to give the Fantastic Four film that charm it is severely lacking. The main problem was 4 main actors (5 if you include Doom) and such little screen time!

5/10 for me.

It's not a shit genre, you have a ton of comedies that are real classics, Strangelove being a very good example of it. A lot of comedies can, just like Strangelove, be more than 'just a comedy' as you put it. They can have elements of satire, for example, which will serve to elevate them. It's an obtuse way to look at the genre.

Brainless action, I can understand, as it is, well, "brainless". But you should be able to rate an action film very well if it hits all the right notes.

Deciding a film of a certain genre can't have a certain ranking because of its genre is one of the main reasons I don't like marks, it makes absolutely no sense.

A brainless action is - generally - by definition, not a great film because it's, well... brainless.

Though I guess that depends whether you distinguish between a film being entertaining and great.

Watched nymphomaniac parts 1 and 2 recently. Part 1 was a lot better than 2. It was often funny and genuinely interesting whereas 2 got boring and disgusting (I'll never look at a coat hanger the same again).
