Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Had a few outings to the cinema this week:

Spectre
- Not as bad as was made out IMO 6.5/10

Black Mass - Was really looking forward to this but I felt it was slightly disappointing 8/10

Hunger Games - Mockingly Part 2 - Adequate ending to a simply adequate franchise, saw the ending coming a mile off 6.5/10

Not a 10/10 but I enjoyed it. Entertaining if somewhat predictable.

It's not a perfect movie, but I really enjoyed it, maybe I was bit exaggerative though. I guess one of the reasons I liked it so much was that the film was targeted at me (teens).

Actually I'm surprised teens were the target for the series. Quite dark at times. Small children getting killed in one of the scenes from this movie.

I'm with you though. I really enjoyed it too (and I'm in my 40's :nervous:). I realize that some have mocked you for your post but as long as you liked it that's all that counts.

I like you! :)

Yeah but I thought it dealt with those scenes quite well though. I was completely shocked when the Hunger games actually started (the start of the games) because it was quite dark like you say but the use of the shaky camera (which some people didn't like) and other directing techniques made sure that this was a 12a (which is what it needed to be to attract all those teens and make the load of money it did.

DeadTime
A Birmingham based rock band are stalked and killed by a maniac. Utter pile of shit. Definitely one for @pauldyson1uk Have to give it a point as my wife worked on the marketing team for it 1/10

Nanny Cam

My bad luck with film continues with this film about a nanny who is psycho and tries to break up a family. Starts decent but once the shit hits the fan, all the characters bar the lead actress start making ridiculous decisions. The twist kinda gets you then again re-twists itself and it's impact dwindles instantly. Waste of time 3/10

 I will give it a watch.

Spectre
Skyfall was overrated and Bond's character made no sense (they turned the nihilistic, ruthless shagging machine into a sulking teenager who only returns to his usual self when he fails to achieve his sole objective) but at least it was fun, Craig and Bardem were really good and it basically wasn't Quantum of Solace. Spectre is just dull. Barring the excellent fight scene on the train it's just boring, the villain isn't in anyway menacing and Daniel Craig looks bored. I get that the Bond films had to change to be more like Bourne but it tries to do that stuff whilst still having the camp silliness and the obvious nonsense of Bond remaining unknown despite him saving the world every couple of years, the fact that he can get out of seemingly impossible situations by firing one bullet and not get hit by highly trained gunmen. I (and seemingly most on here) think it's crap and I suspect the only reason that a lot of critics haven't said as much is because Bond is such a big and popular franchise. 3/10

Brooklyn
I got roped in to seeing this having been completely put off by the trailer. As it turns out, it's wonderful. It's funny, looks great and the performances are universally excellent. As someone who left Ireland, albeit at a much younger age, I could relate to the difficulties of moving away from home and how even when she's settled, she's still drawn into going back to Ireland. Saoirse Ronan really is a fantastic actress and although I'm not sure her makes the right decision in the end, she and all the other characters in it are completely engaging and it's simply one of those films that makes you feel good without being too corny. 8/10

Glad somebody else enjoyed this, its not the kind of movie I'd normally pay to see either but thoroughly enjoyed it too.

Moon

Slow starter but it does get going. Very interesting and thought provoking film. Sam Rockwell and Kevin spacey are both very good (even if its only the latter's voice) and add to that the brilliant directing, score, and brilliant cinematography and you have a good film.

8/10

Mission Impossible Rogue Nation - Probably one of the better movies I have seen this year. Enjoyable characters, great chemistry, they really do feel like a "team". Say what you want about Cruise, but this franchise suits him to the ground. The car/bike chase was fantastic to watch as well. The only thing I did not like about Ghost Protocol was the villain, in this movie on the other hand the villain is much more interesting. 9/10

Mad Max: Fury Road - wow, just wow. This is probably the best action movie I've ever seen. Better than The Raid. It is nonstop high octane feckery. It is batshit mental. Love it. 10/10

Jurassic World - it's basically taken all the memorable bits from the first three movies and put them in one film. It's decent but not great. Indominus Rex lol. 6/10

Get Hard - decent flick with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart as his black friend. Ferrell needs to get toughened up as he's going to jail so gets Hart to come and train him. 5/10

Just saw the last Hunger Games film, it's quite good. The previous one was a bit boring with not much happening, this one was more entertaining, it was a good conclusion to the series of films.

Carol: Fecking great. A little patience is required but worth it for the intimate direction by Todd Haynes, beautiful designs and great performances by Blanchett and Mara.

Sure, t was a great performance. Don't think it deserved an Oscar though. It was quite generic a performance (Person slowly descends into sickness) compared to other winners and quite derivative to boot.

What? It was a great but also generic performance, because the (true) subject matter of Hawking wasn't original enough?

127 Hours I wasn't expecting much from a film about a bloke stuck on his own for 127 hours but despite knowing the story (including the spoiler I didn't mention) I really enjoyed this. Well worth a watch. 7/10

Terminator Genesys
Maybe it's because of the list of shit films I have watched recently or because I had the lowest of expectations going in but I surprisingly didn't hate this. Sure the film was a bit of a mess and I think that has a lot to do with it being a brainless action film that forces you to think too hard due to the time travelling element but the action was decent, Emilia Clarke is hot and Arnie is a joy to watch as always. Jai Courtney however needs to stop being the lead role in action films. Had a decent time 6/10

Regular Show: The Movie

I'm a big fan of the cartoon and this was a real joy to watch. It included all of the humor and quirks of the show and was stuck together with a decent plot about time travel. If you like the show, definitely watch the film 8/10

Pixels

I have avoided this for ages including passing up a press screening. Finally saw it and had a bit of fun doing so. Adam Sandler wasn't as annoying as usual, nostalgia with games such as Pacman was nice and there were some funny moments. Michelle Monaghan is also a hot ass milf. However, it's quite forgettable and seeing Kevin Smith in a film just makes me want to punch my cat 5/10

Jaws

I'm shamed to say that I have never seen Jaws until now but to be honest, I was a little disappointed, mainly because of my own expectations. Critics said it's one of the most horrifying films ever and I just didn't see how... It was definitely good, a great soundtrack, a claustrophobic story, intense action and top notch editing, however, some of the characters acted too unrealistically to the drama unfolding in the first half and just irritated me. The second half though was intense and amazing 7/10

Pacific Rim: Giant robots fight giant aliens, standard plot of the save the word with some decent effects. 6/10

Mad Max: Fury Road: Have never seen the originals but it's just a mental film to me. Great action sequences but it's so surreal I didn't enjoy it at all. Felt like 300 but with cars and guns. 4/10

Excellent summary, it was perhaps too frenetic, pales in comparison to the original movies with Gibson imo which were grittier.

Regarding Jaws, just think about it a little. It's very understandably one of the most horrifying films of all time. It genuinely affected a whole bunch of people. It's 40 years old and what it does is make a horror movie out of a real-life scenario. Sharks are everywhere, you read about it in the news. You don't have the internet so your knowledge is only as deep as you seek it and stuff you hear is taken more at face value than it is today. No one's ever thought twice about the dangers of the beach. It's the classical place for a hang out with your friends or a a get together with the family. Then comes Jaws and shits on everyone's party. People were afraid of swimming pools after seeing that movie.
It was also one of the first movies that had extensive marketing and a wide opening release so the initial reaction to the movie was bigger than usual.

Lover Come Back: Caught this on late night telly recently. Doris Day and Rock Hudson. The way they used to make romantic comedies. Clever script in the service of a good plot; Doris and Rock are perfect; and Tony Randall is a comic genius. Makes you wonder about the cult of dumb which dominates the modern genre. Did Wit die in its sleep in the 70s or 80s, or was it murdered by idiots?

I love the Regular Show, I used to put it one when the kids were out.

First time watching Jaws, I am shocked, I love it seen it many times.
Shocked you were disappointed with it, it gets a 10/10 form me.

I still liked it just didn't love it. Of course that probably had a lot to do with how much of it I had seen via popular culture and parts here and there on tv so I knew how all the tense moments played out beforehand.
