Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

This joke might've worked if I said the opposite.

But you expected the film to emotionally resonate. If I went to see a movie about two women fancying each other, I wouldn't expect to identify with their feelings - I'd expect it to feel odd.

It's all about your expectations. You expected the unexpected. I expect that's where you made your mistake.

In fairness, it wasn't a great joke. But it was made under the influence of alcohol - at 2 o'clock in the morning.

There were some people before saying that they thought it was excellent, and to be honest I watched it at home.
Watch things at home on a shit stream, expect a shit movie.

"Empathy" is just a seven letter word I guess.

ABCs Of Death 2
So unlike the first one, where there are a few exceptional ones and loads of dross, this is a lot more consistent and overall a better watch. There are less known directors in this but the effort put in is much higher. Especially liked K, Q, R, T, V, X, Y & Z. As you can see, quite a few good ones. In fact the only ones I hated were E, L & P. Still the run time is too long for this type of movie 6/10

Nah, the quality was very good, but of course it's much less atmospheric than cinema.

Still, I said I found the movie boring, which wouldn't change no matter where I'd watch it.

How can you empathize with a sexual orientation you don't share? If I go to a movie about a guy who regards shoe leather as a gourmet delicacy, I can watch him tuck into a pair of Oxford Brogues with ketchup all night long, but my gastric juices aren't going to flow.

Yes because homosexuality is some bizarre perversion like eating shoes. Maybe I am a homosexual male?

But actually, I was looking to emotionally relate to the idea of a doomed love. Additionally I might have been able to place my feet in the shoes of someone who experiences the world differently to me.

The Hateful Eight - 7/10

Pretty good all around flick. I think Goggins and Leigh steal the show...although all the actors portrayed their characters quite well. Its a long flick but kept up my interest for the duration. The movie does get rather bloody but we've come to expect that from QT.

I watched the screener version of the film so Im not sure if what I did see will be the final cut shown in theaters. Around chapter 3 or 4 a voice over comes in who from what I can tell is QT and narrates for a short time. Also some scenes seemed to cut to the next abruptly....if anyone has seen this in the theater can you compare that version to the screener?

The Revenant is a bearly bearable 80 minute snowy western dragged bloodied and mauled over 150 minutes. It's a tired old script with a bunch of dumb cliches, characters without any nuance and a lot of ropey acting. Some of the dialogue is extremely corny; "like an elk into the forest" - feck off. It's funny to me that Inarritu can accuse others of failing to grow up (superhero comments) when he has made such a juvenile film himself.

It felt like a wannabe-handsome-epic with it's stately pace and wanky Malickisms and no doubt will recieve plenty of praise on this basis. Some of it is pretty but there is a lot of distracting camera flourishes (close up pans with wide angle lenses yuck) , assorted droplets on the lens and some really dodgy animal cgi. The Bear Grills inspired rebirthing scene was painfully pompous and that Dicaprio's fluctuating injury severity seemed based on plot convenience rather than biology, felt really weak to me.

Di Caprio deserves an Oscar (or rather deserves to be appreciated as one of the best working actors) but not for this film and Tom Hardy's Pirate of the Carribean deserves a slap.

feck anyone who thinks* this approaches anwhere near Aguirre territory.

*Not really, think what you like.

The Hateful 8 Inspired by TV programs like The High Chaparral and a good looking extended episode is exactly what you get with added Tarantino gore. Tarantino light but entertaining enough. 7.5/10

Sicario Great looking thriller with a theme not dissimilar to the US version of The Bridge that starts really well but then the last third loses focus and purpose. The end result is a bit of a letdown. 6.5/10

The Hobbit: Battle of the 5 Armies WTF were they thinking when they extended this short novel to 3 long films. Looks great but boring and unengaging in the end largely due to the extra superfluous material. A single 3 hour film would have been brilliant. 6/10

Found.
A horror movie obsessed boy finds out that his older brother is a serial killer. A slow burn of a film, it deals with quite a few coming-of-age issues and in the end is a very disturbing film that sticks with you for a while. Let down by pretty poor acting and some inconsistent cinematography but a decent genre film 6/10

The Reverand Great looking winter set Western. Di Caprio grunts well but I lost the will to live well before the first hour (of what must have been 3 or 4) dragged past. 6/10 - 5 of which are for the cinematography

The Revenant

A few great scenes, but ultimately boring. 2.5 hours, and 1 hour of it is Di Caprio crawling. 5/10

Would I watch this movie again? No. Its quite unremarkable but for a few scenes like you suggest.

7/10???

Shoe eating (people do eat their shoes in famine conditions) represents a human appetite channeled in an unusual direction, so the analogy is apt. You either find leather mouth-watering or you don't. If not, you'll never understand another's desire to consume it.

Placing your feet in misfitting shoes is a dubious business. Sexual love is not an abstraction; it's a thing of the flesh, with a fleshy end in view. If the end is emotionally alien, the love which impels it can't truly be understood.

Funnily enough I'm already thinking about watching it again! Wouldn't mind seeing it in the cinema as well. I can see why it's not everyones cup of tea, though.

Disappointed to see people not being too keen on The Revenant, thought the trailers looked great initially.

Yeah, disappointed to see so many negative reviews. Undoubtedly will end up watching it myself, but I'm not as excited as I was. May wait a bit so I can forget about them otherwise I'll just walk in with a negative mindset.

Agreed. Think people are being a tad harsh on this. Worth seeing again for the gorgeous cinematography alone. The bear rape had me wincing.

Think the Revanant is very much splitting opinions.

I've got one friend, who generally has a good taste in films, saying it's solid 9/10 while I've got another saying it's a 6 at best. I'm intrigued by it, it looks visually beautiful and has some great actors in it, but I'm concerned by some of the comments above.

The fact that they're all watching rips changes things I think - it definitely looks like a film for the big screen.

So dull you didn't even get the name right :)

Yip Man 3

Becoming a bit tiring going with the same formula, although they try to cut down the cliche by having the fight with Tyson/Cheung in a secluded area with no bravado of Chinese vs. White stuff it's still bit cringe worthy at best. The drama they tried with his wife is also feels so forced and there's no chemistry between those 2.

The fight is well choreographed though, but I still feel his 2nd movie fight with Samo Hung is still better on all front.

Oh well, well worth the admission fee if you're a chinese film boon, they don't make that many good one you'd have to find scraps every year for something good enough to make it to the silver screen.

6/10

I saw a high quality version on a huge hi res screen. The look, feel and cinematography were very good indeed. These might be better still in the cinema but the reasons for my poor review would remain. It is a dull and quite pointless story told at great length.

Black Mass
Was avoiding this one as I thought it looked shit and I had just seen Legend at the time. Made a mistake as this was pretty good and I enjoyed it more than Legend. Johnny Depp looked ridiculous but good to seem him 'act' again and the cast was really impressive, especially Joel Edgerton who is impressing me with every role he's been in recently. The accents were a bit flakey though but overall I really liked it 7.5/10

Ted 2

Another I avoided and this one I should have just kept avoiding. I liked the first one but this seemed like a live action unfunny episode of Family Guy. Ted sounded more and more like Peter Griffin and the film was boring as shit. Struggled to get through it and only made me laugh a handful of times. One of the worst films of the year easily 2/10

Cannibal Holocaust

I'm a huge horror fan and this film is always mentioned on websites I read and podcasts I listen to. I can see why it was so controversial at the time of release, really is quite gruesome but the film is very hypocritical in it's message to the way it was made. Poor acting and weak story. Was quite bored watching it 4.5/10

Aren't all stories pointless though?

Creed Not a bad attempt at rebooting the Rocky series. Odd direction at times (hard to say why but it seemed a bit amateur at times) and perhaps a bit slowly paced but quite pleasing as well. The finale wasn't as well handled as it could have been (it is a Rocky film after all) but not half bad anyway. 7/20
