Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I was in agony the first time I saw him in Key Largo, as I couldn't figure out who he reminded me of and then it finally hit me, Chief Wiggum!

I'd say I enjoyed all of these more than Double Indemnity.

Sunset Boulevard
The Third Man
The Maltese Falcon
Strangers on a Train
The Big Sleep
Key Largo
To Have and Have Not
Shadow of a Doubt
Detour
The Killing
White Heat

All good movies but only sunset blvd, the big sleep and maybe key largo come close to double indemnity.

Flight

Ebert loved it and I usually agree with him but not this time. First off, the music sucks. Not the songs themselves but how they were used in the film. Unimaginative classic rock staples...boring. Anyway, the film started off really well but then it just dragged on and on. I'm not a person who needs action but it was melodramatic and the people I watched it with were cheering for Denzel the whole time, which I found offputting.

6.5/10

Talking fast and smart is in part what defines noir. And Double Indemnity had some the slickest dialogues from that period.

And it is horrible and unnatural as it makes it obvious that they are just parroting a script.

What do you mean by cheering?

Ah okay, I wasn't sure if you meant they literally cheered. That would drive me mental. I've seen that before in some cinemas in the US where people will cheer or shout out loud at some shit that's going on in the film, that doesn't happen here so I found it really weird.

Sometimes people do that in action movies and stuff. It's weird. But the worst part is when people clap at the end of a good movie. I always stand up and shout about how the actors can't actually hear the clapping but then everyone looks at me like I'm the weird one.

You are the weird one.

You're all weird.

Flight

The first half was very well done IMO, they could not close out the movie properly though. The supposed parallel story line of another woman turned out to be pointless and added additional 20 minutes to the movie that made it a touch too long. The scenes in the plane were also probably the best done yet.
I have not been able to tolerate Denzel in his last 10 movies or so but he consumed this role really well, shades of his usual OTT moments still creeped in but they were bearable.

spoiler about movie

That was was one the threads movie played with. It was largely geared up towards enabling the viewers to cheer for Denzel's character even though they probably should be hoping for someone like him to be caught by the system.

Like what? I also happened to rewatch it recently and still think its top class.

I agree, I think it's marvellous and so entertaining. It effortlessly combines light and playful (as with the first sales pitch and the little man inside me speech) with darker thrills (Keys dropping in on Walter late at night, or Walter taking out the daughter). The writing by Wilder and Chandler is exceptional, the way the character of Phyllis is slowly unveiled during the film is masterful. As for the dialogue, it's not so much the speed but the fluidity of the language that's so impressive.

I don't think that the film has aged badly. On the contrary, that the Coens have been mining the film for years, is testament to it's enduring freshness.

Haven't seen many of these movies but The Maltese Falcon and Strangers on a Train are definitely better. MacMurray has nothing on Bogart.

Flash Gordon.

A crappy film in all respects, the acting is rubbish and the script is questionable, the CGI is non-existent, but I love it, I can and have watched it over and over again.

The best part is the sound track by Queen.

6/10 for me, but I suspect barely a 2 or 3 from others.

killing-them-softly.jpg

Killing Them Softly - A good recession-era, anti-gangster film. It was very reminiscent of Dominik's earlier film Chopper with it's quiet intensity, brooding psychopathic characters and sudden burts of violence. The setting is a depressed small town in America around 2008 (ironic snippets of the 2008 Presidential campaign and global Recession were often seen or heard in the background), it's essentially a cynical and satirical take on the US, capitalism and the chaos of the mob world. It also had a terrific cast and whilst it was no tour de force, it kept me absorbed and interested for the entire running length.

Searching for Sugar Man - Fantastic docu. It's up there with Gimme Shelter as one of the greatest music documentaries I've seen. No one paid any mind to the enigmatic "Latin Bob Dylan" Rodriguez in America at the time and his two albums faded to obscurity, but he actually ended up becoming a star in South Africa, unbeknownst to himself. Engaging and with great music.

Bag of Bones.

A decent enough ghost story, Pierce Brosnan plays a writer and when his wife is killed, he goes to there country house, soon he starts to get ghostly visions and dreams.
Pierce Brosnan was excellent, has was the young girl playing Kyra.
Story behind it, is a Steven King novel about wanting revenge, well worth a watch.

6/10

Django Unchained Fantastic. Even if it is a bit long, it's always entertaining.

8/10

They say "nigger" a lot. Just fair warning.

The Hobbit It doesn't really drag, but it could have easily been more succinct in its presentation if they left out the New Zealand Tourism Board's panoramas of walking. Adding in things that weren't in the book but were happening at the time is interesting. I think it will tie the film to LOTR, but it's probably too much. I'm guessing that they'll stretch the second one to finish at the escape from the wood elves with Gandalf and Radagast fighting the necromancer simultaneously. Not nearly the film that the LOTR films are.

6/10

Yes I agree. IMO he went way OTT with the word. Maybe that was the point? Was he trying to say we shouldn't be ashamed to say it? Or maybe he was just giving a big FU to Spike Lee?

Dorian Gray: I thought it wasn't bad like most of the reviews said it is. Haven't read the novel though.

Skyfall

I am a massive Bond fan and I was looking forward to this immensely and I was not disappointed.
It is not Craigs best Bond, for me that goes to Casino Royale but this comes a very very close second.
Loved seeing the old DB5 and playing the old style Bond music.
I thought the story was excellent, plenty of suspense and some nice humour in there.
I can see the new Q being very entertaining, also the way they threw in Moneypenny right at the end was not expected.
The villain (Silva) acts like a traditional Bond villain, cleaver and one step ahead all the time.

One of my best films of the year.

I turned this off after 30 minutes, I started watching it earlier because I found a good stream but I couldn't be arsed with it. Then again, I've never really liked James Bond films and I'm not sure why.

Cloud Atlas I thought this had the potential to be stunningly good or an utter disaster but it was neither. The 5 intertwining times/storylines are woven together pretty well and all in all it is an entertaining and quite pleasant way to while away a couple of hours. Quite what was the point of the story I'm not that sure but I'm am sure that you could find elephant sized plot holes if you wanted to be I quite enjoyed it. 7.5/10

City of God (2002)

It was raw, refreshing and quite captivating. Portrayal of the Brazilian Favelas of the 60's and 70's was very well done. There were enough subplots, backstories and character development throughout (Lil Ze, Rocket and others) to keep me interested and to keep the plot going strong.

Apparently based on a true story - and the amount of kids that were involved in the crimes, drugs and thuggery was quite staggering.

If you're sick of the cliched Hollywood stories and want something that challenges and evokes your mind a little more, this is definitely worth your time

8/10

The Hobbit - 9/10

The Descendants - 7/10 - very nice little story. Wasn't bothered about watching initially but am glad I did.

Hugo - 5/10 - for a kids movie it's pretty boring. It looks nice but the story did nothing for me at all.

Warhorse - 7/10 - again I was not overly pushed about watching but again I ended up really enjoying the movie.

American Psycho - Nah, thought it was a bit average and...douchey. Basically a film with douchey characters being douchebags. I know some people get off on Christian Bale being a douche though I suspect most of them are douches themselves.

Arrietty - A substandard Ghibli film, which is not really a bad thing at all really. It's guaranteed to cheer you up.

I enjoyed Arrietty. Sure it was fairly toned down compared to their other stuff, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable.

The Last Seduction - A quite brilliant neo-noir. I don't know why but it reminded me a bit of Glengarry Glen Ross with it's amoralness and jazziness. Linda Fiorentino was amazing and just ridiculously sexy.
