Nothing wrong with a good fun action movie. Even Armageddon, which was possibly the most stupid of all those was still lots of fun.

Everything. I think you and Pauldyson ought to be locked in a different films thread.
Boring. Everyone loves a good fun action movie from time to time, films such as Die Hard, T2, Running Man, Batman trilogy etc fit the bill. Whereas the likes of ID, Con Air et al make you question why you wasted 2 hours of your life. The problem is when you've seen it before...when it's the same template, it then falls well short of being fun and is more of a tedious waste of time.
Wibbs, there's no way Red Steel can ever be fun.
I guess they aren't as serious as Nausicaa with more added comic relief whilst Nausicaa goes hard with the environmental themes, something Miyazaki returned to later with Princess Mononoke, which for me is his biggest masterpiece. Anyway, they're all brilliant.

Laputa is nothing like SA in that sense. They're only really similar in that they're both chase movies with a skilfully created sense of peril throughout.
Laputa does have a fantastic steam punk vibe to it though. Not really surreal though.
I think it comes down to preference, I love fantasy surrealism which is why SA is my favourite. I also think it's probably his best in terms of animation and character design. Maybe I've just got a screwed up mind that loves vivid dream-like sequences - Paprika, Miike and Lynch anyone?

The styling of the world and the technology. The characters and plot are all standard fantasy fare within that.
It's not anything like Paprika but it's a better film in my opinion.
I quite liked Armageddon, because I was into Ben Affleck at the time. But if I ever watch it again, I'll use subtitles, because I found the sound awful and couldn't understand what they were saying a lot of the time.
Deep Impact was miles better.

I agree with you there, have you watched Meteor made in 1979,I think it is good, I am a sucker for disaster films , I will always watch them.

On the plus side Steve Buscemi was in it, I watched it with my kids last week (my eldest whose 7 loves anything to do with outer space etc), its fairly lame in all fairness. On the subject of Steve Buscemi I watched Ghostworld a few nights ago and really enjoyed it especially his performance.
I'm easy to please on Friday night when I'm totally stuffed and ready to slump on the sofa with my brain off. That said since my son is a bit older we don't tend to watch films together and I haven't seen a Real Steel or Armageddon type film since.
When you have kids you end up watching lots of things that you wouldn't choose yourself and so you tend to enjoy things for what they are rather than for what you would enjoy if you could have a free choice.
I think he is an excellent actor, I don't think I have seen him in anything I did not like.

The plot is simple, killer fish show up and start eating the swimmers and then they get killed in a stupid way, the film is just basicly blood and boobs.
The start was just a piss take of Jaws, Richard Dreyfuss was sat in a boat, drinking the same beer and singing the same song has Matt Hooper, I was half expecting him to say "We need a bigger boat"
Kelly Brooke is a dreadful actress
4/10 and 3 of them are for Elizabeth Shue in a uniform.

Cheers. I didn't go much into which studios made them since their animation offer plots that are varied and uninhibited. But the ones by Ghibli have a definite underlying relations which I like.

The premise was good, the cast was decent, and Steven Soderberg directing… had loads of potential! but ultimately I was disappointed 6/10
The build up took too long to get started, there was no tension, then the unwrapping of the plot and the ultimate twist happened far too quickly
The acting was good enough overall though, Rooney Mara is a proper actor, most of todays current supposed good actors have a tendency to over cook this kind of role IMO, she played her’s very subtly which I thought worked and the only reason the movie is getting a 6 from me
Definitely don’t need to go to cinema to see this one, but worth a watch on dvd/netflix some time

Soderbergh might be the ultimate 6/10 director.
Just watched Silver Linings Playbook. A solid and funny rom-com film no doubt, but how it get nominated for so many awards is beyond me. Must be a really bad year for the Oscars.

I have the same opinion as you: I enjoyed it, I thought the acting was pretty good and De Niro actually had a real part to play which was good, and it felt quite real, it had a warmth about it. I agree with some that said that Cooper's bipolarism is dealt with a bit easily, just gets better when he starts dancing with Jennifer Lawrence (maybe you would too though), but that with the conclusion at the dance are my only small gripes with the film which is pretty enjoyable overall.

I thought it was the Crash of depression movies.
It's a typical go for the nomination Oscar bait film really which is what the Weinsteins push for when buying this stuff. Attach well liked O'Russell and huzzah, noms were in the bag. Getting nominated in all 7 "main" categories is crazy though, pretty sure it's the first film to do it, not sure if Network did it though.
I enjoyed it, and in the 8-10 Best Picture format, deserved it's nomination I guess unless you want to change the Oscars from being overly mainstream Hollywood.

It should have been but somehow wasn't. Not an Oscar worthy film in a millions years mind.

Paint by numbers financial/mistress movie that I instantly forgot all about once I finished watching. By the end and its conclusion you have to wonder what the point of the film was, all I can think of is a vehicle for Gere to get his hands all over some young women again.

Compliance
Would have got 1/10 because the decision making by EVERY member of the cast was so fecking stupid but once I read about it and realised that it was exactly what happened in real life, I forgave the film a little. Still shit though.

Bullhead (Rundskop)
A Belgian film about hormones in men and animals shot in metallic greys. It starts off as a conventional crime thriller but does a handbrake turn about 25 minutes in to become something quite different. Not entirely successful but worth a watch.
