Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Watched The Amazing Spiderman yesterday. Was a decent watch although the Andrew Garfield's version of Spidey didn't quite have the comic book's Peter Parker /Spiderman's sense of humour. No idea why it needed a reboot though, but there you go...

American Hustle

Quite enjoyed this. Hooked me with the opening scene which was hilarious ("you should not have done that") and kept me interested with just the suggestion that Amy Adams might show a nipple. Good performances all round, quirky humour and I like the 70's vibe. Also a nice menacing surprise cameo from
Robert de Niro
. He's only in it for 5 minutes but it's the best thing he's done in ages.

I thought Garfields Spiderman was the closest to the comics books Spiderman in terms of sense of humour.

Rush Despite the liberties taken with the relationship between Hunt and Lauda this was a brilliant take on the rivalry between them and 70's F1 in general. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. 8.5/10

Red Cliff & Red Cliff 2 - I watched them in last two days and I must say that I quite enjoyed them. The topic was great, the music was awesome and despite some mythological elements of Chinese people, still I loved them. They were very epic movies, especially the second part. Both 8/10

Peter Parker's more sarcy, Garfield's Spiderman wasn't much of a wisecracker.

Except when he donned the costume where all he did was wisecrack. Compare that with Maguire who seemed to spend 90% of the time going WHOOOOOOO! WHAAAAAAAA!!

Frances Ha - 7

It's rough around the edges and loses its way for a little while halfway through, but it's definitely one of the better films I've seen this year and one of the best films of that genre over the past few years. Worth watching just for Greta Gerwig.

American Hustle - There's a certain amount of cheese that is inevitable with this sort of film, but it's genuinely funny and the 2 hours+ fly by. White Rabbit sounds even better in arabic. 8/10

What cheese do you mean? I thought it was incredibly arch and knowing. There was some nice tenderness from Bale, in what I think is his most human performance to date, but I don't think it was ever cheesy.

The cheese that comes with all heist/con films. I don't think the acting was cheesy, just the situation sometimes.

Anchorman 2 - 7/10

I may get some flack about this movie, but I thought it was hilarious. I didn't expect much going into it, but found myself laughing much than the first film. There is a lost more to the plot than what the trailer shows which is good. There are similar gags as in the first film but with subtle differences. Not so much where I was rolling my eyes as with most other sophomore efforts for example. There were a couple of cameos I could of done without, but it didn't ruin the movie as a whole.

Agreed, suprisingly un-wooden. I think his method acting clouds his actual talent as an actor but he was good in this, working with Russel must be an actors dream.

Lone Survivor

I can normally forgive a good old fashioned U.S.A! flag waving, jingoistic, war recruitment movie if it's entertaining on some level (Zero Dark Thirty, Black Hawk Down) but this was pretty dull. Aside from the feckin title giving away the ending to anyone that hasn't read the book (most people I imagine) it's 30 minutes of lame "we've all got families at home/these are real people" back story before a ludicrous 90 minute action sequence that takes the 'based on a true story' aspect and embellishes it with action movie cliche. Seriously, when the shit hits the fan it's basically - snipe a load of cannon fodder Taliban, roll down the hill a bit in bone crunching fashion, rinse and repeat. The script must have been about 5 pages long. Will probably end up sweeping the board at the Oscars now.

Also @ anyone that's seen it - why
didn't they just tie up 3 of the goat herders and take the 4th one with them until they'd radio'd for evac, before letting him go to free the others? Or is that too simple? I thought these guys were supposed to be elite?
Pah..

Rush

Now this is how you can embellish a true story with a few Hollywood'isms and make it work. A very entertaining take on the Formula 1 rivalry (although they didn't hate each other in real life at all apparently) between Niki Lauder and James Hunt centered around a certain famous incident during the 1976 season. Thor was good as Hunt and the action scenes were well shot by Howard but the real star here is Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Basterds) as Niki Lauder. It's a fantastic performance helped immensely by the fact that he's the spitting image of the man. Worth a watch.

You can't deny his results but isn't Russell supposed to be extremely difficult to work with?

So got around to watching American Hustle last night and sadly I wasn't as impressed as a lot of you were. There were several disappointments, from the fact feck all really happened, the big twist wasn't that big or surprising or inventive, the soundtrack wasn't as good as I'd hoped, Jen Lawrence didn't look as hot as I expected and honestly it just seemed like a bit of a forgettable copy of a lot of what went on in Goodfellas. The good bits were the acting, which by and large was great from all the main characters and there was a few surprise laughs. It's certainly watchable, but not lived up to it's billing.

Golden Globe nominations
Best Director - Copying another mans work isn't that much of an achievement but it was beautifully set and shot. Lots of walking scenes and Amy Adams looking smoking.
Best Screenplay - Again, I didn't think it was anything new or inventive and the big finale was a bit easy.
Best motion Picture - Soft enough too, never going to win it though.
Best Actress - Adams - Well deserved, great performance and looked amazing throughout.
Best Actor - Bale - Again well performed the part. So desperate but with something cool underneath.
Supporting Actress - Lawrence - I thought she was amazing in this and played the part to perfection.
Supporting Actor - Cooper - Was the least impressive of the main cast for me. Over acted I thought.

Good shouts in 3 of the 7 for me, but I've not watched 12 years a slave and I hear it's amazing so it could be reduced to 1/7.

I turned American Hustle off after 40 odd minutes because I found it so boring. It spent a ridiculous amount of time setting itself up and doing absolutely nothing whilst all being incredibly pleased with itself. The performances looked great, but a lot of actors being actory in a room isn't really what I was after.

Then again it was NY's day and I wasn't really in the mood for a slow burning character piece. I'll give it another go soon as obviously 40 isn't enough to be going on.

That was kinda my problem. I was expecting it to be a cross between Goodfellas and Oceans 11 with some action and some cool hustler tricks but got neither of those. Could be one of those things where I had set expectations too high but my missus thought the same.

Elysium

Was better than I expected, but could have done without the cheesy clichés. "You are a special boy, destined for great things." Seriously, shit like that only makes my toes curl.

Still, a good sci-fi flick with great special effects and ok acting (if you can look past Damon's spanish accent) and the plot was exactly what you can expect from watching the trailer. 6/10

He was excellent indeed Scrumpet. The only performance I found in anyway wanting was Cooper but it might be because I don't really like him. Nice hair though.

I thought the same. To be honest, I think his main problem in the film was sharing so much screen time with Bale, who was excellent. The female characters were very well acted too.

How funny was the Mexican Arab though? I was kind of bored up until the point where he said 'AbScam' was racist

"dafuc do you care if it's racist? You're mexican"

Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I forgot just how absurd this film is, from the start when Jones was in the middle of a Atomic explosion and was saved by a fridge to the really stupid ending , with beings from another dimension.
I love Indiana Jones but really what were they smoking when they came up with the script.
I hope the 5th film that is in the pipeline, is better than this pile of shite.
Hopefully it will not have Shit LeBouf in it.

I should really only give this 3 or 4 at most but because I love Indiana Jones films and it did have a few good bits in it, I will give it.

5.5/10

Rush.

I was not expecting this to be up the quality of Senna , but It was almost there, the racing parts were very well filmed.
It showed just how dangerous F1 was in the 70's, handled the Lauda crash very well.
Hemnsworth has Hunt and Bruhl has Lauda were inspired choices, both excellent.
The film got both spot on, Hunt was always going to be a playboy and die young, where as Lauda took life more seriously and it showed.
Christian McKay's portrayal as the slightly eccentric, petrol head extraordinaire, ever so aristocratic but hopelessly financially incompetent Lord Hesketh, was also excellent.

This film is a must for F1 fans, I also think none F1 fans would like it.

9/10

12 Years A Slave

Wow. An absolutely superb piece of film-making which will no doubt clean up at the Oscars and rightly so. I've heard people say that some scenes are uncomfortable but the whole movie should be mandatory viewing if you ask me. Flawless performances (although personally I could've done without the cameo from Pitt) and gripping from start to finish. Shameful that this passage in history has been glossed over so freely too.

Excellent!

Night of the Hunter - First half 10/10, second half 5/10.
Once the kids got on the boat, it all became a bit silly. I paused it to grab a drink and realized that there were still 45 minutes left. The whole hiding in the barn overnight thing was a bit silly too

The East - Politics are overly simplistic and juvenile but the style was great and Brit Marling was fantastic throughout 8/10

Sound of My Voice - Watched this solely because Brit Marling was also in it. As a thriller, it just wasn't exciting enough. Raised some interesting questions toward the end but I became bored because of the seeming lack of stakes. 6/10

Cloud Atlas - I'm not going to bother explaining this to anyone who hasn't seen it. It seems to be pretty polarizing in the reviews I've read but I loved it from start to finish. 10/10

Hard Candy - I wish there would have been more on the background of Ellen Page's character. It felt like she was just a Bringer Of Justice tool, rather than an actual character without her own motivations. Still excellent. 8/10

American Hustle - Another safe film for David O'Russell. Not bad, but not great either, so his RT score and awards fare will continue to sour. Insane overacting at times, although that could of been the wardrobe making me think that.

12 Years A Slave - Glad McQueen is getting his due for this, it's a very good film(as are Hunger and Shame). I see it's got some random critics for ignoring the wider scale of slavery, but it's just a film, and one that's done supremely, especially to keep it as oscar bait, of which it will surely pick up best film and supporting actress out of the bigs. Actor and Supporting Actor bit more up in the air right now with Dern putting a great performance in Nebraska and Fassbender not campaigning.
