Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

American Hustle - Should have been called "Amy Adams' Breasts".... I really enjoyed Amy Adams' breasts.

They were fantastic weren't they.

Captain Phillips

I don't think I can write an impartial review of this because (and I'm sure he's a lovely guy) I find Tom Hanks to be the cinematic equivalent of watching paint dry. It also didn't help that there were no subtitles during any of the somali speaking parts or maybe it did (as I justified to myself) as I was now suffering the same amount of confusion that the victims went through (minus having to suffer through the mundanity of a Tom Hanks movie).

It was alright I suppose. If you like Tom Hanks.

Her - Very good. Highly original and interesting look at different aspects of modern life, especially relationships and technology's growing influence. Soundtrack was excellent, it looked gorgeous and Joaquin Phoenix gave yet another impressive performance.

Even though you never see Scarlett Johansson she still manages to be incredibly sexy.

Never Back Down 2
For some reason I enjoyed the first one and thought this might be okay but it was a slight let down. Disjointed storyline, NO character development at all, strange character motivations, awful acting (bar Michael Jai White) but it did have decent fight scenes and training montages 4.5/10

Episode 50
I kinda like POV horrors and I was hoping this would be like Grave Encounters, which was pretty damn good but this was actually a piece of shit 1/10

Black Fish
Great documentary, really made me sad. Highly recommend it 8/10

Here Comes The Devil
Was a bit slow and had a lesbian opening scene which was pretty redundant to the actual storyline. It was decent and reminiscent to We Are What We Are but the actual horror were few and far between. Decent film, good acting and ok storyline but could have been a lot more exciting 6/10

American Hustle
Loved it. Great story, amazing acting and very engaging film. It never felt over 2 hours which is a great sign. Really captured the time period and lot of Amy Adams side boob  8.5/10

12 Years a Slave 10/10

Best movie I have seen for a couple of years at least

Saw this last night and was a bit disappointed. Obviously a powerful story and the lead actor was really sympathetic, but I thought it was too glossy Hollwoodish and occasionally cliche ridden, especially the two lynching scenes, when I was expecting something much more arty/edgy in the form of McQueen's first two films, Hunger and Shame. Didn't think the narrative was too coherent either and the Fassbender character seemed all over the place and not very believable, in my opinion. Also didn't like the whole Brad Pitt schtick.

Can't see McQueen ever returning to a his subtle indie style after this.

Very interested in reading the book though, and think this film comes at a good time when the US is filled with right wing nostalgia crap for the old South and their less than sorry attitude for slavery.

Frozen: 5.5/10

A good movie, but overrated. Decent, though the musicals do tend to get on your nerves early in the movie (I despise the troll song). Not much of a story arc and plot is weak. The animations are OK, but definitely not in the top shelf of animation films.
My four year old daughter is obsessed, I have to listen to the songs off that film about 20 times each per day via YouTube.

The Act of Killing. 3 hours with a bunch of unpleasant, preening tinpot thugs, responsible for unspeakable acts of torture and murder. The banality of the banality of evil. Were these men damning themselves with their own words and actions? The 'make a movie' jig seemed superfluous to this end as the men had already done so within their first few minutes of screen time. Were they supposed to confront and account for their actions? I felt the scenes of supposed contrition were poorly performed, crocodile tears. And given the genocidal levels of atrocities that occurred in Indonesia, the mens feelings (genuine or otherwise) seem wholly irrelevant. I never felt that the central conceit justified itself and at times it felt obscene.

There is something interesting in the film about life viewed through narrative and the complicity of art. The film also does serve as a portrait of a country in a desperate state. But that's not enough in what felt like a rather prurient experience. Also I think Herzog and Morris' names being attached may have helped give the film and Oppenheimer himself an easy ride with regards to ethical questions raised by the making of such a film.

The Outsiders
This was one of the first (and only fiction books) I have read and to see FF Coppolla's vision of it was awesome as he captured it the way I had pictured it all those years ago. It was a great platform for some of the big stars of today (Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise etc). Really fun film and has some really nice cinematography 8/10

12 Years A Slave
I dont know, maybe the hype made me expect too much but I didnt think it was as amazing as people are saying. Dont get me wrong, it was very powerful and had some great performances but it felt like it was made to win the oscars and was over-dramatic in places and quite cliched in certain scenes. It also didnt feel like he was in captivity for 12 years, mainly due to his lack of weight loss during the time period, which really bothered me. Steve McQueen is a good director (and went to my university!) but I hope he can revert back to slightly more indie approach of Hunger and Shame and not let this alter his directing method too much 7/10

I was flipping through the channels the other day and fell upon a film about the 2008 US presidential campaign, with Woody Harrelson in it as well as Ed Harris and maybe others, can't remember. It was halfway through so I didn't watch it, apparently it focuses of Sarah Palin being on the ticket with McCain. Has anybody seen it? Is it worth a watch? (also I don't remember what it's called )

I felt the same about this film. It's good, but not great, and could've been so much better imo. I much preferred 'Dallas Buyers Club' of the films I've seen lately.

Her

Cute little tale set in the not to distant future where everyone dresses like Simon Cowell. Some might say the message is that love is unconditional and every experience we have with it shapes us into the person we become. I say - even in the future when a woman is an operating system, they're still a complete pain in the arse.

Good film. Lovely bunch of understated performances. Could've done without all the noisy cyber sex though. I think my housemate might have thought I was watching something else.

Yeah it's interesting, but the real-life events have been so well-documented that it's really just a vehicle to allow smug libs to point and laugh at her again.....which she thoroughly deserves, in fairness.

I liked it a lot and am a big fan of Ejiofor. I hope he and Fassbender receive Oscar noms. One thing I did notice, was Hans Zimmer using the opening bars of 'Time' from his INCEPTION soundtrack throughout 12 YEARS A SLAVE.

Brad would, of course, cast himself as the decent white guy.

I felt exactly the same. Generally, it was a good film and I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a masterclass in the mould of Schindler's List in the way it has been suggested. There wasn't that much of a story to it. Still, a good film though. 7/10.

Riddick
It's good to see the series go back to its gritty sci-fi roots but to be honest, the film takes too long to get going and is a little boring. Vin Diesel spends a lot of time teaching a dog some tricks and then doesn't appear for a while, which I found really odd. The action is ok but none of the foes seem like they can do any damage to Riddick and the pacing seemed really off... 5.5/10

I'm an Indonesian, funny I didn't even notice it exists.

Thanks from bringing it to light, although I don't know what to expect, I feel it'll kinda be disturbing seeing a movie about what's happening in my own country

12 Years A Slave - Emotional, hard-hitting and largely uncomfortable viewing.... I thought it was superb. All the cast do a great job, but Fassbender in particular is terrific.

Rush
Finally got to see this and boy was I impressed. I feel ashamed it took me this long to grab a copy but I must say it was definitely one of the best films I have seen in a long time. It's a mesmerizing story and had me hooked for the entire length of the film. Great performances (especially from Daniel Bruhl), paced and edited fantastically, the score was epic, the race scenes were directed brilliantly and all round just amazing filmmaking. Loved it 9.5/10

The Wolf of Wall Street - I loved it. So many genuine laugh out loud moments packed in. DeCaprio and Hill were brilliant and played the manic drug addled nut jobs perfectly. This was like Gordon Gecko meets the cast of Fear and Loathing. Recommend it very very strongly. 9/10

I really want to see this but never have the time due to its 3 hour length. Hopefully will sit down and watch it on Sunday

Was it 3 hours???? Fecking hell, I got home from work last night at 11.15, downloaded it, then watched it. What bloody time was I in bed at so??

I gotta say, if that was three hours it just flew by.

Ha! That is great to hear. I think it clocks in at around 3hrs and 2mins (in and around).

Also just like to add that Margot Robbie is stunning in this flick. The scene where she appears at the door while he's lighting candles was

BLUE JASMINE Very funny film, interesting story and a great performance from Cate Blanchett. Woody Allen's best film in a long long time. 8/10

HER

My favorite film of the year by a mile, I loved it. Brilliant performance from Phoenix and a great original story, iv never seen anything quite like it before.

9/10

I watched Back to the Future last night for the first time in years. It really is a great film. Michael J. Fox and Crispin Glover are great. It's funny how some films you loved as a kid, you often dismiss as you get older. Until you see them again, that is. On a side note, Marty McFly's mom was hot in the 50's, and a little bit of a slut too, which is always good.

The Wolf of Wall Street - Loved it. It's just oozing energy and inspired acting and direction from Scorcese who is at his best here. Like others have said, the 3 hours really flew by. Di Caprio is manic and hilarious, it's up there with his best performances. Jonah Hill is great too.

Margot Robbie has certainly grown up since she was in neighbours...feck me she is stunning.

Good review, have a copy myself will have to watch it soon.

Really, really enjoyed this. Hanks is superb. A gripping movie from start to finish, that just kept me on edge throughout.
Recommended. 9/10

Wow, so many great films lately it seems.

Just tried to watch Cloud Atlas last night but fell asleep as I couldn't make any sense of it all. What a complete mindfeck of a film, I'll give it a second try at some point.

Totally agree, a cracking film, for F1 fans it is a must.

Yeah do, honestly it's excellent but really hard to get into (the first 40 minutes I had NO idea what the feck was going on). Very ambitious film, very unique.

Saw Rush too, and even though I have no interest whatsoever for Formula 1, I really enjoyed it. Great story well told, fantastic acting from Brühl and some really great directing. Very good film, not sure I'd rate it quite as high as some do on here but it's great on its own merits.
