Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Kubrick didn't want Sellers to play multiple rolls, it was the studio who insisted on that as a stipulation for funding, which Kubrick reluctantly agreed to. He also played Captain Mandrake.

The only reason they requested that was due to the success of Sellers performances in Lolita where he totally stole the film, but it's silly because he was just playing the same character with multiple identities in that film. Anyway, Kubrick and Sellers being the geniuses they were managed to pull it off brilliantly.

I totally agree with your rating, in fact I think it's one of the best films ever made.
Cheers! Now it makes sense. That actor was fantastic though, in all three roles he gave fantastic performance.

He's upped his film game. Also @Revan I really enjoy reading your reviews.

PS. the man who plays multiple roles in Dr Strangelove is Peter Sellers as Tarrou points out, one of England's greatest ever comedians and comedic actors.
I stopped making reviews on redcafe a couple of years ago when everybody was unhappy with my review on Blade Runner, a movie that didn't liked at all.

Apartment 1303
Remake of a film I really enjoyed. Everyone around here knows how much I love a shit movie but this was even too shit for me. One of the rare films I actually switched off before the end. How can they take a film that was decent and absolutely butcher it like that?! I mean there is a scene near the start where a woman is in an apartment and is talking to herself saying shit like "I love this place... I bet it will be a great home for me!" *FACE PALM*. One of the worst films I seen and it's not even one of those so bad its good films. It's just bad on any level 0/10
I shall have to watch this.

Paths of Glory - Another masterpiece by Stanley Kubrick (seriously, I don't have any idea while until yesterday I had watched only 2001 and The Shining from his movies). It deals with the war (World War I) but from an unusual perspective. You can't watch the movie and don't sympathize which Col. Dax (Kirk Douglas) and those three soldiers. It is impossible also to not hate the generals/politicians etc that while they play the game of thrones - and are bloody incompetent at it - innocent soldiers lose their lifes. As I said here, in an unusual way. 8/10

On the next few days, I will correct my mistakes of not watching many Kubrick movies, and continue with A Clockwork Orange, Spartacus, Lolita (read the Nabukov book several years ago) and Full Metal Jacket. All of four movies by him I have watched have been great.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - I liked the first movie despite being average acting, brainless, dystopia for teenagers. This was much worse though, it was a bad copy of the first one dragged single-handed by Jennifer Lawrence (which is amazing). It has it moments, and it is fun, but in the end, it is very average. 6/10

Been a while since I watched it, I agree a very good film Kevin Costner was excellent, but he was just one of many excellent performances.
I'd forgotten how many great actors were in it. Costner was great, then you have Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones, Joe Pesci, Kevin Bacon, Sissy Spacek (who's a bit hysterical though), Jack Lemmon and Gary Oldman who's excellent as Oswald.

I'd also forgotten just how biased the film is, and how much it (apparently) makes a travesty of facts, which is a bit of a shame.

As a film though, it's pretty excellent. You just have to more or less forget it's 'based on a true story' and take it as pure fiction, it's more enjoyable like that.

The Hunt (Jagten)

Fantastic movie, and the acting (especially the main guy) is great.

10/10

Snowpiercer was entertaining enough but I thought it was too heavy handed. Also the characters lacked depth...if anything I would've had it more absurd like a Gilliam movie(it must've been influenced by Gilliam). Loved Tilda Swinton's character, but it's a shame the upper classes weren't explored as much. Decent watch but too many unexplored avenues.

To put it mildly!

They were completely one dimensional. Seemed really like a graphic novel. And not a very profound one at that. Was it adapted from one?

Not sure, Pogue. And yeah it was puerile stuff. That said it was watchable.

The graphic novel was meant to be excellent, haven't read it though.

Didn't think it was puerile at all, but I agree the characters lacked depth (not that it bothered me, didn't think it was really necessary). Visually I thought it was stunning with some excellent filmmaking along the way. One of my favourite movies of last year.

I enjoyed it but it felt like it was aspiring to be something weightier than it actually was and falling a good bit short.

It was very stylish and I liked the combination of pathos and bat-shit zaniness but it was all a bit all over the place. And not in a good way.

Visually stunning is pushing it. Anyway better than the likes of Godzilla.

Don't miss out on Strangelove.

I guess I can see what you mean, I was just very engrossed by it and loved it (and was loving it more and more as it went on). Loved Ed Harris in it as well.

I thought the scene when they arrive in the school compartment was really excellent.

My sextape is better than Godzilla, and I'd put on some weight just before it!

Yes, that was very good. Bonkers but good. I also thought Ed Harris was good. It was the quasi-philosophical stuff that I didn't really buy into and kept making me disengage from what was going on. It was all just a bit melodramatic and silly. Not to mention the terrible Irish accent by Billy Elliot!

Surprised nobody has reviewed this one yet,

X- Men Days of Future past: Wolverine's conscience goes back in time telepathically, in order to prevent chaos and destruction caused by the sentinels, who target both humans and mutants.

If only Bryan Singer directed X-men 3, sigh. First of all, the acting in this movie is just brilliant. The likes of Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Jamie McAvoy do a brilliant job. Before I went into this movie, I was afraid that Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters was going to be a disaster but the dude absolutely kills it. There is one particular scene which involves quicksilver doing stuff, which is simply mind blowing(Won't spoil it too much). Some people complain that Wolverine is always given the main lead but to be fair to the dude, he always delivers. In this movie you get to see a different side of Wolverine, as this time he is not the one who needs help but rather the person who is expected to deliver it to those who need it.

X- Men Days of future past, is the most ambitious entry in the franchise so far and also the most rewarding, allowing fans to see the casts of both the original trilogy and First Class join forces in one action-packed, high-stakes, and surprisingly witty adventure film.

I can think of very little to criticise this movie, so I'm going to give this one a 9/10. Best movie I've seen this year.

*cough cough*

I feel like watching Brazil. For me this(Snowpiercer) film wasn't absurd/bizarre/zany enough. It was as if it was trying to be a Gilliam but not having the bollocks to go through with it. Loved the female teacher and her machine, by the way.

And has anyone seen Zero Theorem? Looks a beaut visually speaking.

Full Metal Jacket - For first half an hour, it was some of the most craziest stuff I have seen. That officer looked like a tough motherfecker who chose some radical methods to make tough his soldiers. Then a very unexpecting ending of that part of the movie. The second part was the real war on Vietnam. With a melodramatic, but really excellent ending. 8/10

Goes to show that 90 minutes post crisis is crucial.

I saw Oculus. The set up is great - a spooky mirror, haunted house throwback. Then when the video cameras come out it all descends into jump scares and slasher cliche. It's irritating because for 30 minutes it was pretty enthralling.

The Double. Apparently based on a Dostoevsky short story, but singling the source out is hardly worth it as the whole film quickly becomes a game of spot the reference: Gilliam, Jeunet, Jodorowsky, Lynch, Kaurismaki, Chris Ware... it gets boring fast . I thought the reason for Submarine's referential nature was because it took the universal idea of viewing your life as a film and implanting it into a pretentious kid, one who views his narrative as a French New Wave romance. After watching The Double I think maybe Ayoade just doesn't have any ideas of his own. And Darkplace is hardly evidence to the contrary.

Before the Devil Knows your dead. Really enjoyed this and a fine film for Sidney Lumet to go out on. A botched robbery come family breakdown movie. I thought the acting was great and the choppy editing was masterful - something that could have easily ruined the film if done badly.

Bad Timing - I liked it. A dark, visually striking and mazy relationship drama. Very brave performances by the two leads, a tour de force in Theresa Russel's case though I'm still not quite sure about Art Garfunkel's performance, even got some strong proto-Jesse Eisenberg vibes from him...which maybe suited the character, I don't know.

Spartacus - so far the least enjoybale Kubrick's movie (which anyway doesn't make it a bad movie). Douglas and Olivier were brilliant, while that girl was cringeworthy. The romance part of the movie was poor too. Most of the battles were completely skipped (likely for financial reasons) and the ending was so melancholic that it looked pathetic to me. 7/10

X-Men Days Of Future Past
I went into this thinking it will be a mess as most films involving time-travel are but in all honesty, this handled it really well. Probably the best block buster of the year so far and another good entry into the X-Men series. It has enough jaw-dropping moments, especially the bit with Quicksilver and the plot was engaging enough to put it above just a popcorn flick. The acting was spot on and it really had an epic feel to it. Very enjoyable 8/10

Oculus

One of the best horror films I have seen in a while. It goes to show that a horror film can be really enjoyable, even by non-genre enthusiasts with a decent story and some good performances. A lot of the camera work was also quite offbeat, giving the film a more eerie feel. No gore or anything like that, just a good old fashioned scary story. Does trail a little towards the end, but the film overall was brilliant. Loved the transitions between the present and past storylines 8/10

Rigor Mortis

I thought this will be some sort of a joke film after seeing the trailer but to my surprise, it was actually really good. It was a hybrid of horror, thriller, mystery, martial arts, fantasy drama. It also had some amazing cinematography and hi-speed camerawork. I think you have to understand Chinese culture to fully appreciate this film (I was watching with my partner, who understands a lot of Chinese mythology so she was explaining things to me as it went on) but even so, it's definitely worth a watch 7/10

House

This actually starts off quite well. Two couples and the owners of a motel get trapped by a man who claims to have killed god and wants a dead body by sunrise. Halfway through the film, they introduce supernatural elements and this pretty much leads to the films downfall. It gets too edit heavy from here on in, too many flashbacks and the films kinda falls flat. Hoped for better 5/10

A clockwork orange - A deep, dark and as depressive as Requiem for a dream movie. With the geniality and the extreme atmosphere that only Kubrick can make. It starts with the life of a young psycopath hooligan and continues in a process of his transformation. The guy who played the protagonist did and extremely good job. 9/10

Anyone here know the title of a 5ish minute long French animation about suicide? It features a man interacting with billboards. Saw it last year but I've forgotten the title.

Suicide Shop? Although I dont think it's that short...

Just watched Godzilla and I have no words.ist so shit that its brilliant.
