Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I don't know why True Grit is getting so much hate. I quiet liked it. Jeff Bridges was great and so was that kid.
Jeff Bridges was very good but the kid was wooden. Her performance was hyped because she was a kid acting as an adult, but her performance had no nuances whatsoever and wasn't very believable.

True Grit was one of my favourite films from the last 5 years. The girl is great, Damon is fine, the relationship between Rooster and Mattie is fab, the dialogue is exquisite and it has these strange and wonderful absurd moments, such as the bread roll shootout and the question of why hang a man so high. It's a beautiful display of cineliteracy and it's crafted to within an inch of perfection.

I've got Theodore Rex ready to go and I'm expecting a similar standard.

Yeah, I didn't like True Grit either (the original was poor too imo). The Coens haven't made a truly great film since No Country for Old Men (I hated Llewyn Davis, A Serious Man was just OK).

Been all downhill since The Big Lebowski, if you ask me.
I agree, although I've always considered O Brother, Where Art Thou? to be one of their best films. Actually, I don't think they made a bad film up until that. It's definitely been hit and miss ever since.

They set the bar so high from the outset. Blood Simple and Raising Arizona are two of my favourite ever movies.

I just watched True Grit and really liked it. I can see why people would think Damon wasn't at his best but I enjoyed the film.

7.5/10

Still Alice

Julianne Moore was exceptional. Amazing performance.

I really hate Baldwin though, I've never liked the guy and I though he was a real prick in this.

KStew and Kate Bosworth were okay but thats pretty much it.

I didn't think it was that good a movie on it's own but Julianne stole the show really...

8.5/10

Being torn to shreds by the critics at the moment, but I'll definitely be watching it too. Gyllenhaal is an excellent actor, has great range.

Ahh, thats not good. I'm not reading/watching anything prior myself. I generally don't mind boxing/sport movies so I think I'll enjoy it plus Rachel McAdams

Yeah I love Jake too, I loved Jarhead when it came out, Donnie Darko, Zodiac, End of Watch I loved and of course Nightcrawler he was phenomenal in, totally owned that role!

Furious 7

After the last installment when Vin Diesel caught the lesbian looking one mid-air after flying through the windshield of his car, over a bridge, following a head on collision (and there was a tank involved somehow) and landed without a scratch, I swore I'd never bother with another of these movies again. But alas, I did. Turkish, Filipino Jet Li, and Rock hard were enough to whet the appetite for some decent fights; unfortunately it was a forlorn hope. Just more flying cars, Vin Diesel wearing lifts and skipping leg day, wise cracking rappers, and ugly lesbians fighting.

Barely watchable nonsense which ended on a tear jerking tribute to Paul Walker made somewhat uncomfortable by my lingering boner for Missandei.

You're cray cray dawg, A Serious Man is a fantastic film, one of their best!

Very nice film, quite moving. I didn't think Baldwin's character was really black and white though, I think initially he does everything to help her and stay with her but the film shoes quite well how difficult the disease is for people around her. Ultimately, he's not very nice though, of course.

The worst thing about Furious 7 is they had Tony Jaa who kicked all kinds of arse in Ong Bak and they use him for about 5 minutes. They should have had him kicking the shit out of rooms full of people.

Agreed, thought that was the films biggest misstep.

Furious 7 was completely proposterous in almost every way. I loved it.

Chappie

One of the worst films I have ever seen. How the hell do you go from District 9 to that?

Antoine Fuqua is a weird one... he did Training Day, but since then, the majority of his output has been garbage (though I did enjoy Equaliser for what it was... a brainless Denzel vehicle).

I'm very worried about his Magnificent Seven remake... it's got a great cast (Denzel, Chris Pratt, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Peter Sarsgaard, Ethan Hawke and... erm... Vinnie Jones) but its a tough enough remake to do as is, never mind with him at the helm.

Eye For An Eye
A woman's daughter gets raped by Kiefer Sutherland and gets away with it due to a loop hole in the justice system so she decides to take justice into her own hands. Was a decent enough film, mostly well acted and paced pretty well but it's those kind of films that you might watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Ed Harris was atrocious in it though, which was surprising, I normally rate him in most films 5.5/10
