Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Last Witch Hunter: Mindless yawn fest.

One of the boring movies, I've seen recently. Weak story, weak screenplay, non-existent story and a twist you can see from the time the movie started, it never deviates from the 'formula' a single second. How the hell can you have a Vin Diesel movie and not have him do crazy action sequences? Absolutely pathetic.

Don't bother.

Goosebumps: Very entertaining.

Nothing to be critically acclaimed off, but the movie entertains from start to finish. Something similar to Night at the Museum with a monster angle, the movie moves at breakneck speed and keeps you interested till the end. Jack Black does what he does best here and leads a case of teens in a stellar fashion!

Definitely a good time pass movie.

Minions.

Took the kids to watch this Saturday morning, their choice , so was not really looking forward to it,
but I thought it was excellent, funny with plenty of decent jokes, even a couple thrown in for the adults.
It was better than most of the shite I have been watching of late.

6/10

Black Mass goes on forever and it's all a bit pointless. Depp is decent for a change but I thought Cumberbatch was miscast.

Bridge of Spies: Spielberg and Hanks - good, but not their best.

Its an interesting story and I enjoyed the glimpse into the period, but felt the patriotism was overdone.

7/10

Life of Pi - I'm sure it would have been a better experience in the cinema in 3D, and it was still visually impressive but overall I was bored watching it.

Spectre: I fell asleep and missed half an hour of the film, woke up, thought it was shite and went back to sleep for the rest of the film.

Like Father Like Son (Dir. Koreeda) - left me thinking about it for days after.

What would you do if you found out your 6 year old son had been switched at birth?

The acting from the mothers and children was excellent.

Bad Lieutenant - better than th Herzog remake but eh, not that much to it. Like one of Scorsese's early films with a looser editor. Any film that depicts white Jesus in a vision tends to lose me a bit.

Intouchables - A very entertaining movie, with a nice story behind it. While I spent the movie oscillating between feeling awkward and laughing with Driss, still likes it a lot. The music was also great.

Non-Hollywoodian movies are really a great refresh at times. 8/10

Badlands: My first Malick film and it was a good one. Totally and frankly American, great performances, beautiful film.

Lovely film. Lucky you, still got a lot of Malick to look forward to. Thin Red Line is one of my favourite films, and New World is excellent too. Tree of Life is more divisive, but maybe you'll enjoy it if you like Malick's stuff!

Oddly enough I read an account recently claiming that aesthetic discrimination has a strong genetic component..

Has your milkman got good taste in movies?

The Circle - with my Netflix options rapidly dwindling I watched this low budget...thing. Acting was shite, concept was stupid (basically a violent episode of Survivor) and yet I found it fairly engrossing. So there you go.

The Visit.

Not what I was expecting, I was expecting a horror but this was not a horror.
Found it a bit slow in parts, took a while to get going.
Did not see the twist , but I should of done really.
The film was creepy, there was nothing to scare you, apart from a couple of trademark , bits that make you jump.
The 2 kids that played the leads both excellent.
the only bits I hated were when he started rapping, it was just dreadful
On the whole a very good film, would recommend it.

Drive - Finally got around to watching this and absolutely loved it. The beginning felt like a film version of GTA V. The music, violence, and characters (both the nameless driver and the atypical mobsters) were all top-notch. Hopefully the open ending might lead to a possible sequel? 9/10

The Martian
- Entertaining movie, but pretty much what I expected from what little I knew beforehand about the plot. 8/10

When viewing The Martian at the theater, saw trailers for The Revenant, The Big Short, and Joy. All look like worthy Oscar contenders set to come out in December. Especially looking forward to The Revenant which looks fecking amazing.

Days of Heaven?
I'm ashamed to say I still haven't watched it. Well in truth, I've tried, but both times I started it, I just couldn't get into it, I wasn't in the right mindset. It's a bit difficult cos I don't have much time to watch films on my own (and Mrs RiP doesn't really like Malick's stuff).
I hope Malick casts Hailee Steinfeld in his next film, just so I can see RiP squirm.
Louis Garrel too, in which he jerks off onto a car.
That would be difficult to bear.

Life of Pi - I'm sure it would have been a better experience in the cinema in 3D, and it was still visually impressive but overall I was bored watching it.
Really? I thought it was brilliant.

An Alex Proyas double at The Astor last night beginning with...

The Crow - last saw this in about '96 on VHS and remember been terrified by it. Makes more sense on big screen. It's got tremendous visual style and a great camp, Gothic aesthetic. I thought it was terrific, has really held up well. More character than most of today's comic book adaptations. And great to see forgotten 90s journeyman like Michael "Weird Voice" Wincott, Ernie "Danny Glover" Hudson and Tony "Candyman" Todd. Also Bai Ling.
I was interested to see how conspicuous Brandon Lee's absence was from the scenes shot after he died and yeah, it was apparent, but well handled.

Dark City - Proyas with a bigger budget. Retained the same visual wizardry evident in The Crow, with extra neo-noir and German expressionism, plus deformed Kiefer Sutherland. I've always loved this film but this was the first time I've seen it in a cinema, and still great. I wish Rufus Sewell had done more. Also Jennifer Connelly and Melissa George

The Hidden Fortress - watched this mainly cause I read that it is the movie which served as inspiration for Star Wars, with the bonus of being directed from Kurosawa. Like in all Kurosawa's movies bar Ikiru, everyone acts like a lunatic. There is still a lot of entertainment and unique art on it though. And there could be seen the influence the movie had on Star Wars. 7/10

The Visit - What the feck even is this? I was going to stop watching after 2 minutes - but kept going because of how hilariously bad it was. In terms of movies with reasonable budgets and presumably professional actors and producers it's gotta be in the top 10 worst things ever made.

Omen

Classic horror film, one of my favorites.
Gregory Peck and Lee Remick both excellent.
Billie Whitelaw is genuinely creepy as Damien's nanny Mrs. Baylock. Patrick Troughton is superb as the withering Father Brennan. But my applause goes to Harvey Stephens' who's the epitome of evil… well; he definitely looked the part and had a memorizing awe as Damien.
The music still scares me even after watching it many times, the films still looks good even though it is 39 years old.
The Finale and the end scene with Damien demonic face staring back is chilling.

8/10

Omen 2

The start follows of straight from the first one with Bugenhagen showing a college the face of the Anti Christ and both being buried under tons of sand and rocks.
Jumps forward 7 years, Damian is now a teenager at Military School and discovers who he is.
The story itself is pretty good actually, now that Damien has been under the care of his aunt and uncle, strange things are happening again. It seems like anyone who is getting to close to finding out the truth about Damien is getting killed in some freak accident.
Music again is excellent.
Again the final scene is of Damion just staring with that demonic grin.
Not up to the standard of the first film , but has a sequel it is not bad and is deserving of a watch.

6.5/10

Omen 3

Now the adult Anti Christ, Damion tries to kill the Nazarene.
There is a group of Monks trying to kill him, Every time a monk gets anywhere near Damien the poor guy falls off a bridge or drops down a hole or just slips on a banana peel or something.
Sam Neil is dreadful, Lisa Harrow is decent enough as is Don Gordon who plays Harvey Dean his right hand man.
The baby deaths in the film and the last one with the iron are pretty horrific.
Again the best part about the film is the music, Jerry Goldsmith's score is the best he did out of the three films.
You have to watch this if you have seen the first 2, but it is a poor 3rd to the first 2.

5/10

The Hallow - Watchable hodgepodge about the horrors of visiting Ireland. But with a little bit of everything from Evil Dead and Peter Jackson to Alien and The Shining it lacks focus and it's own identity. The creature feature elements were it's strongest suit and it could have worked as an oirish Pan's Labyrith. Tree out of Ten.

Grapes of Wrath
- Story about truck hopping economic migrants. Anti-capitalism, Corbyn propoganda with some fine acting from Hanoi Henry et al. Grape Film.

I always had a problem with Omen. If the devil could send the anti Christ down to earth, why didn't god send another Christ to kick his ass? Seems a bit shitty and ungodly from the big man upstairs.

Love 3d from Gaspar Noe-6/10

Apart from having cum squirted on my 3d glasses. I quiet liked the film. It isn't too dark or depressing. It is a love story explored entirely through sex. I couldn't help but think Gaspar Noe was trying to include few memories from his own youth into the story. The ending was poetic and beautiful. The film doesn't standout in terms of style but is pretty similar to his other work.

Our Brand is Crisis
(never mind the Bullocks)

Sandra pops up as a has-been electoral strategist running a conservative for the presidency in Bolivia. Fairly lighthearted, interesting settings, ultimately lacking in ideas. 5.63/10
