The sequel to the tedious DDG v Courtois thread: Rafael v Seamus Coleman

He's been sent off twice in five years according to soccerbase - hardly excessive. Sorry Keyser, just seen your reply after I'd posted.

No worries mate, I didn't explain very well :)

He very rarely gets sent off. When will this myth die?

His injury record is shocking though, yes.
Sorry I meant more his playing style, I tend to wince a lot more when he flies in.

Like I think the lack of red cards may be more luck than judgement :)

His discipline record is actually pretty good, I'm fairly sure the likes of Zabaleta have seen more cards without developing this reputation for impetuousness.

Still, that reputation is a problem in itself. It's unfair really but the truth is everyone thinks Rafael is a hothead and his style of play hardly discourages that idea. He has to learn to be extra careful with that in mind.

Here is Rafael's number of appearances in the league since he came here...

That's not good enough if we're being honest

Yeah, but in 2012-13 he played 28 games. ;)

C'mon dude, you telling me you've never heard of the "Man Utd tax", it only applies when we are trying to sign players and clubs just keep adding more ££'s.

On a more serious note, we rarely get good deals for players, only ones I can remember clearly are RVP, Blind and maybe some others.
Bollox! Any of the big clubs get the same treatment when they really want a player! It's not a conspiracy is what I'm saying!

The frustration comes from knowing how good he can be when fit. He was the best right back in the league when we won it and there's hope he can stay fit enough to reach that level again.

Its not an Anderson-type situation where he had a few decent performances 7 or 8 years ago. He was consistently excellent over a whole season/season and a half and was vital to our most recent success.

No body is saying his appearance record is good enough, but he can be.

Compared to Coleman's since he joined Everton:

9/10 - 3 apps - 0 goals
10/11 - 34 apps - 4 goals
11/12 - 18 apps - 0 goals
12/13 - 26 apps - 0 goals
12/14 - 36 apps - 6 goals
14/15 - 17 apps - 2 goals

33 more appearances, 8 more goals. Much healthier numbers, I think.

Rafeal's youtube compilation would be much better than Colemans though. He does so many great things ... every now and again.

Let's face it, if we sign Coleman he'll suddenly struggle to play more than 15 games a season.

Coleman is great going forward (better then Rafa), but I think he's just bang average defensively (worse then Rafa).

To be fair, in that period Rafael has had one more assist than Coleman in that time. Also, Rafa is much better defensively.

Comparing goals is not really that useful. Rafael has never been a goal scorer and has not needed to, as we have always had at least one world class striker, which Everton have not. They need their fullbacks to shoot and to score goals, which is clearly a tactic of theirs, as they have not had a truly top class striker who they can cross to.

Also, despite having had 67 fewer appearances than Zabaleta, Rafael has only assisted 2 fewer and scored 4 fewer goals.

I think overall, the biggest, and pretty much only, problem is that Rafael is stupidly injury prone. If he weren't he would be without a doubt the best RB in the league and one of the top few in Europe.

I don't believe for a second that LVG and all his knowledge of European football will target Coleman of Everton as the RB he wants above everyone else

There are really not that many good right-backs around let alone available.

Tweets please. All Rafael bashing in his thread.

I would prefer we buy players that LVG has identified frankly.

No way a lot of these are "his guys" 25m is also a massive fee. that means we would have spent over 50m on fullbacks and another 32m on cover who can play those positions. could have got bale for practically that.

Do people think LVG is stupid? I'm sure he's heard of Coleman before he even came to Man Utd.

What £32m on cover are you talking about? And yeah let's not sign fullbacks. Just sign Bale. Also don't worry about CM or CBs. Let's sign Messi too. Who needs defence? Just play with 10 attackers and De Gea.

Yea because that's the point I was alluding to, Christ.

Ha ha. Rafael is a terrible defender. Colemanis an all round better player.

I'd rather the better defender. I'd rather Rafael.

Rafael can't keep fit but Coleman is not £25m better although a slightly better player. I'd rather we addressed other issues (lack of pace in attack, midfield general or leader of a centre back) and keep Rafael or Valencia there at the moment, as we have plenty cover.

Ffs

Still see the old classics being thrown about re Rafael. It's crazy.

Terrible defender
Walking red card
We just need too rash/dives in to complete the set.

Can't believe some of the bashing Coleman is getting, he's one of the best right-backs in the world when on form but they way people talk about him here you would think he was a pub player. People saying he can't defend which last season he was excellent defensively and a major part of Everton's success last season

I'd have no problem with LVG paying 25 million for Coleman, Clyne is a good prospect too but I'd rather have Coleman anyday

Slow down mate, hes good but has done nothing on the world stage

I would find it very very difficult to pick 5 better right backs in world football right now then Coleman. The only reason he's never done it on the world stage is because he's never been given the opportunity he deserves at club level and international level.
