Television The Wire

Interesting.

I don't think Simon has done anything near the level of The Wire since. The Deuce was probably his best. He's also used a lot of the same actors in those shows, so hardly a surprise.

Right after a number of false promises tonight is the night.

I've got some craft beer in, the tv to myself from 9 and gonna make a start on this.

Awesome. You won't be disappointed.

I'm rewatching it for the umpteenth time right now, just started season 2. It's still the most ambitious, challenging show I've seen on TV. It's just brilliant.

I have a soft spot for season 2. The Greeks were interesting.

First time I saw it I was a bit spun out by the change of direction but, all things considered, I now think seasons 2 and 4 are the best. Some great characters in 2 and you can really feel David Simon's sympathy for them all the way through. Especially Frank. His suffering is almost biblical.

It's like an American mirror of what's happened to the steel and coal towns in the UK.

Love his rant at the end
What do you say Johnny?
Johnny: i don’t remember
Frank: don’t remember what?
Johnny: nothing

Frank's son, Ziggy, was a colossal feck up. It was painful watching him struggle through life.

This is the exact reason people under appreciate it. The initial reaction is being taken aback by the shift in focus, which I get, but once you realise how much wider the scope of the show is than season 1 there’s no excuse not to love it.

Exactly. It's the show's willingness to constantly evolve and change focus from one social stratum to another that makes it so special. It's so rare (and potentially dangerous) for TV to move away from, or totally ditch, major characters in order to keep finding something new to say. In the end, you go from watching a hugely superior cops v gangs show to watching the critique of an entire city (and country and ideology). It's got everything.

Seeing this thread bumped makes me want to rewatch this for about the 10th time now. Absolutely brilliant show never gets old, has to be my favourite show of all time!

“You come at the king, you best not miss”

I started watching the first episode and really struggled to make out every word - maybe it wasn't a great copy I'm not sure so I've parked it for a few days and ordered the whole 1-5 on DVD.

That will at least come with subtitles if I need them - found each series being sold at CEX for £1.50 plus P&P.

I'm off Friday to Wednesday so hoping it comes tomorrow and I'll start ploughing through it.

They remastered it to Bluray a few years ago with 16:9 aspect ratio instead of 4:3. I recommend trying to find that!

I saw all of The Wire apart from the last season. I now don't remember any of it so watching the last season on its own feels pointless. At the same time, I'm not one that likes going through a tv series more than once...

So... how good is the last season and is it worth watching?

it's still great but generally considered the weakest of the five. They got cut to 10 episodes so the whole thing feels a bit rushed and preposterous at times compared to the other four seasons, but the last episode is excellent and it's still The Wire so it's still better than almost everything else out there.

If I ever rewatch this it will definately be with subtitles.

It's better than almost anything else you'll see, bar the first 4 seasons of The Wire.

Finally watched the first episode just now the dvds arrived today.

Looks good the characters seem well thought out would have watched more but tired after gardening.

Defintely needed the subtitles though I still didn't understand some of the words used.
