Top 4 race 2016/17

Anyone thought they would win the league last season? I meant even into February where they're very catchable. Nothing is impossible in football. Of course this is just unlikely.
It's not unlikely, it's impossible and it simply won't happen. They even lucked out against a Sevilla side which was already going downhill back then. The quality of the other teams is way too good for them.

I'm not going to write them off! Stranger things have happened!

Teams are scoring for fun, what the **** has happened to us ? Westbrom became an unbreachable barrier for us at home while they conceded 2 against Watford and and home defeat against Southampton.

I remember a comparatively barren seasons of 2004-05 and 2006-07 but at least we were getting results. All these draws, particularly at home are very concerning. LVG said in the beginning of his last season that his next target at United is to be able to penetrate and score against teams who line up against United with a compact defense planning to frustrate. I guess we have regressed in that particular department.

Top 4 is gone unless we win 8 out of 9 remaining games or something like that.

Much relies on tomorrow's performance and result. A dominate performance couple with a result would give me much more confidence going forwards and putting a string of results together we need.

Anything but a win tomorrow would rule us out of contention as I think Jose would then put all he's focus in the Europa League.

Big blow to ours and Arsenal top 4 hopes. Could really do with Stoke win/draw today, was convinced that they would get a result, looking at Liverpool's line-up and after Stoke was leading 1-0 at HT. At least we still have 2 games in hand over Liverpool after tomorrow but an inferior goal difference means we need to better one of their results. I think Arsenal will still get top 4 though, this is what they live and breathe for. If they can get through their next 3 games with 3 wins out of 3 and Liverpool dropping points in any of their next 3 games, it's all in Arsenal's destiny as they still have 2 games in hand. If Liverpool beats West Brom next week, top 4 is theirs.

Yeah, now it has become even more difficult, albeit it's still in "our hands".

Liverpool are far from convincing though, and it was against Sunderland, they will drop points if this form continues (and seems like it might).

Not sure if I admire or pity those who still believe we're in the race for top 4. I gave up weeks ago thinking this team was not playing well enough to achieve it. It's made the draws in recent weeks slightly less infuriating but not by much. Even if we don't qualify for top 4 we need to create some confidence in the team and start scoring goals which will hopefully carry over into the EL cup run.

I'm not too worried about our PL results because somehow I feel we'll win the EL.

I'm actually really excited about us potentially winning the EL. Would love it if we made it to the final and played Lyon, one of my best friends is an OL supporter, would be fun.
Would actually prefer us to play an easier team! Genk would be nice ;)

We are not making top 4. Yep possibly if we were showing some sort of form but every time we've had the chance to capitalise on others slip up, we bottled it. We have yet to win convincingly against a top team and given we have to play 3 of them, can't see three wins which is what we would need...

I am afraid top 4 won't change anymore. Maybe Pool and City switching positions and that' s it.
Its between us and Arsenal who will get the meaningless 5th place.

And to be fair that reflects the quality of the teams right now.

Strange comment when you don't look at the personnel missing or in jeapordy (illness, tiredness from internationals, small squad). Or even when you don't look at the stats. Since Leicester we have played 6 games:

3 against Arsenal, Everton and City where we got 7 out of 9 points. But we expected that against top half clubs right?

3 played against Burnley, Bournemouth and Stoke. Again 7 points out of 9. But wait, that wasn't meant to happen, right?

Think it finishes 1) Chelsea 2) Spurs 3) City 4) Arsenal

Arsenal will kick in to typical Arsenal mode this time of the year and squeak 4th by about a point in front of Liverpool.

So the consensus in this thread now is that we won't make top four. Then if we win today it will swing the other way.:)

It's actually funny that we are still in the race, considering how bad Arsenal, City and Liverpool have been.

I think it's time to admit that we're already out of the top 4 race. The 3th and 4th places will be divided between City, Arsenal and Pool. Now it's a must to win the Europa League!

It's actually damning where you are considering the above scenario. Ferguson will be turning in his bed.

It's ridiculous if you think about it. We should be dead and buried at this point but we're not. It looks worse than it is due to having games in hand, sadly for Liverpool every side plays 38 when it's all said and done.

I meant to say, considering how bad we've been and we're still in the race. We keep getting chance after chance to make top 4 by Arse, Liv and City constantly dropping points.

Yeah, exactly. People assume that the teams above us will just win every match remaining while being all doom when it comes to us. You can go on Liv, City and Arse forums and you will see they're the same way, constantly criticizing their own teams. For some reason, the fans of all of these teams think they belong at the top.

Yesterday it was definitely off.
Today, we've given ourselves a chance again.

We'll need to beat City away i'm sure

Still looks extremely difficult. City and Liverpool have very favorable looking fixtures.

Even if we beat City away, we've got Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs to contend with. Add to that two fit CB's and potential EL fixtures midweek.

Liverpool only have 6 games to play and they had to rest players cause of tiredness. They have played considerably less number of games than us/arse. I think that has helped them multifold. I think not playing in europe has been a huge factor of who will and will not finish top4. I am pretty sure had Liverpool/city been in later stages of european football they would have less points and more fatigue/injuries.
I still think its over for us and chelsea will finish us off on the weekend. I just hope we can beat anderlecht and go through and win the EL.
For me this is how it will finish
Chelsea
Tottenham
City
Liverpool
Arsenal
United

City just went out in the last round ffs

We've still to play... Shitty, Arse and Spuds away... next up is CSKA at home. We have to man up and get some results or hope we win the EL.

Do you think we can get two draws and two wins from these games and will that be enough? I have a hard time imagining getting any more from these games

We have a lot of top teams left which may suit us as we have struggled to beat the teams that sit back against us. Liverpool have a lot of lower table table teams which they have struggled with this season. Its not going to be easy but definitely doable. We have to be up for every game though.
