Top 4 race 2016/17

We are practically neck and neck with Liverpool and City in the league, yet we have won the League Cup and are in the very deep stages of the Europa...yet our season is deemed a failure in comparison to theirs?

Liverpool are having a great campaign and we are not? Please! Liverpool had the exact same number of points we have right now with the same games played and were dumped out of each cup early doors. They've had a full week to prepare for every game while we've been parading around Europe...Anyone thinking they have been better than us is deluded.
Well it's also about expectations. Liverpool have not won a title in decades and were not expected to be title contenders. Objectively I don't think we are having a worse season and we can make it much better than them. Subjectively, if Manchester United is out of the title race before spring, it will always be a disappointing campaign for me.

Don't forget the cough £150m+ spent cough and £250k+ per week salaries cough. You know, leeeettle things like that. Atichoo!

I still can't see us getting into the top four, not with the matches we've got left.

It's not even about City, Spurs or Arsenal alone, it's the fact we play Southampton away as well which is always a difficult proposition.

Chelsea were very poor yesterday they couldn't even string a pass together but that's no discredit to how excellent we were. For me though City are the best team in the league! they were excellent on Saturday and look a completely different prospect when Kompany is in that team so I'm not really expecting too much from that game. Not only that city's run in after us is ridiculous....they won't be missing out on top 4. We just need to concentrate on ourselves and see where we end up at the end of it. If we finish outside the top 4 then we deserve to.

Chelsea weren't poor by themselves , you made them play poorly.

I don't get the negativity tbh. It's in your hands, you basically don't lose games and Jose will relish the upcoming games against other members of the top 6/7.

You're not necessarily the favorites but for loads of people to say, no it's done, we can't do it etc. Not seeing it tbh.

The problem is we have seen such games through the season where we play well only to drop points in the next game when we should have strolled. Our profligacy in front of goal throughout the season will come back to haunt us. I am not saying it's impossible but I think our best chance of being in the CL next season is to win the EL which seems more probable than us finishing in the top 4.

City the best team in the league? You can't be serious? Maybe next season after heavy investment but certainly not at the moment. They were somewhat fortunate that Southampton didn't take any of their chances in the first half at the weekend also

Personally I think it's the Swansea game three days after City where I see a potential banana skin. Swansea are the only team left trying to dig themselves of the fall and have a realistic chance.

I don't expect us to beat City away from home.

I'm still believing the current teams in top 4 are the ones who will finish in it but who knows what will happen. Let's see.

Agree, too front heavy. But if there was any player in the league I'd like to have it's Sane, amazing player.

Regardless of any upturn in performance, if we manage to make top four it will be an incredible run to do it (or a complete meltdown elsewhere which doesn't seem likely).

I'd still rather we finished strongly in the league regardless of making top four or not obviously.

Think they will bite your hands off if you were ready to exchange Alli for him.

That youngster we signed from MK Dons? Let's not get crazy here. :)

I obviously wouldn't want to trade Alli, but Sane does have the exact qualities we are missing, and he seems to be a great professional player, really like him.

Yup - the one thing you arguably lack is a lightning quick winger with goal threat, who can go past people.

You've got a great side but you lack someone who can create things from nothing while be a threat in behind defenses at the same time.

Agree 100%, although Son does provide this to some extent.

It's even more accentuated when Son doesn't play. Lamela/Eriksen as nominal wingers, for instance, provide little threat in terms of dribbling and running in behind.

Son's a very, very accomplished player but he's a bit off the quality someone like Sané could potentially give you.

Nor do I but I didn't expect you to beat Chelsea either. So if you pull another 120% performance out of the bag then Swansea straight after might be the bang back down to earth. IMHO.

I think its imperative for the club to make top 4 via the premiership for 3 key reasons:

1) We'd have to smash such a fixture list to win the league next season. Such challenges should not intimidate us.
2) I spent some time on RAWK yesterday and was riled within a few minutes: the lack of graciousness and amount of bile they throw at us it sickening and stopping them would make me almost as happy as qualifying for CL ourselves.
3) Should we qualify for Europa Cup Final, better going into that game with CL qualification already guaranteed, to allow the team to play with style and freedom.

We are unbeaten for 22 games, so we know how hard it is for others to beat us. Lets go for a bumper end to the season.

If we pull off a performance to beat City I am pretty certain Swansea will be dealt with as well.

For me the Europa is the easier of the two. Fail to beat City and I can see Jose just focusing on the semi finals if we make it past Anderlecht.

A point at City would be a decent result even without the win yesterday imo. Going to the game next week but I'd take a point right now and be done with it.

Yep. Liverpool is out of reach IMO. We won't win every game (I expect us to lose at least 2-5 points in the remaining matches) and they have only 5 matches left.

We probably have some chance of catching City, especially if we manage to win in Etihad.

Our run is very difficult. While on this season, we seem to do better away than in home, in tough matches (City and Spurs, probably even Arsenal), I would prefer playing home. Our best hope is that by that stage, both those teams won't have to play for anything and will be down. The second problem is Europa League (which I think we should prioritize at this stage). We will be playing more matches than the other teams which will be a problem.

Hoping for the best on the league, but I think that our biggest chance of reaching UCL is by winning Europa.

The bookies odds are weird.

City are best price 1/9 with Liverpool 1/6, I think that should be the other way around, especially as we play City.

IF we beat Burnley, then that City game becomes huge as an (unlikely) victory would put us into 4th, albeit with a tricky run in, but Jose has a proven ability to tactical outsmart the best teams.

I think 4th is miles off myself, unless the wheels come off Liverpool, which I highly doubt. Get past Anderlecht though, and winning the EL becomes a huge possibility.

Mourinho needs to do a Van Gaal here where he beat City, Liverpool and Tottenham almost back to back to get us into the top 4. If we had beaten Chelsea that season, who knows what would have happened.

We would have had qualified for the CL and then gone out in the group stages next year like we did that season.

I'm talking about 2014/15 season. If we had beaten Chelsea, we would have been 5 points off the top. We were on a run of 6 wins in a row.

Once you've finished celebrating another forgettable memorable European night where do these two semi final legs fit in?

Aside from Rojo and Ibra, Rashford and Pogba look like they're already done. Rooney, Martial and Fellaini to start against Burnley?

1st leg before Arsenal away, 2nd leg before Spurs away.

We have to give up on the PL now, certainly Rashford, Pogba, Bailly and Carrick can't play against Burnley

After tonight I feel like we are in the situation David Haye was against Tony Belew, still in the fight somehow but on one leg and hobbling around - I still believe we can do it though!

We seem to be making our way through this Europa League in the most uninspired fashion possible.

Martial and Lingard to flank Rooney on Sunday. The game will end up with Burnley camped in their own half so its chances from dropping balls in and around the box.
Pogba shouldn't be too bad since he's only back from a month off.
Get through this with rest for the City game for Rashford and Mkhi and we'd be in a fantastic position.

I could see you beating Arsenal but I think you'll struggle at Spurs and City personally.
