It’s usually profit on future sale. So 20% of anything above what they paid for him.
On the contrary, the sell-on clause typically applies on the gross earnings of a sale, not the net earnings, unless there's a special clause that's inserted into the deal. In this case, such a clause hasn't been reported, so we'll be getting 20% of the total transfer fee instead of 20% of the profits. Of course, this does mean that certain clubs only sell if they themselves can get a profit after giving up 20% of the total proceeds.

Honestly, given our situation, I wouldn't mind him. I've always liked watching him play, and I'm hoping that he can develop and refine his game further at a better club.
I'm not saying he's better. But stylistically he is way more suited to an ETH system because he's an excellent distributor of the ball. He signed a 37 year old keeper for Ajax last year to deputize for the suspended Onana just because he recognized he needed a GK who can play out from the back.
I expect DDG to start the season of course and deservedly so. But I wouldn't be surprised if he reverted back to his poor form of the previous couple of seasons and made errors. If that happens - combined with the fact De Gea isn't good with the ball at his feet - I could then see a change in #1.
I don't really forsee that at Brentford, as Raya has proven to be a good quality GK and consistent for them over the past couple of seasons, and also is as good with the ball at his feet as Strakosha is.
He isn't better than De Gea, he simply provides a different stylistic option that ETH may prefer - particularly if De Gea is in poor form. He is likely a backup at either club, but I believe he would at least have more of a chance at United based on the above.
Since he would also be at a much bigger club competing for European football and presumably getting paid more than he would at Brentford to and likely be in the same if not a slightly better position, I do find it a bit of an odd move.

just watched his YouTube reel from last season and he’s very similar to Darwin Nunez in style. Perhaps not as cute a finisher but in much of his play.
