Van Gaal spent 250mil here. We have had to get rid of the majority of those signings at massive losses. That will weight heavily on our finances. Also,we signed Pogba for a world record fee last year. Half of that fee is due this year(As confirmed by Juventus themselves). We are definitely working within financial constraints. City are not.
But Woody said we can do things in the market, others can only dream of.
There is no way we should be working within financial constraints, especially with the amount of money we brag about making.
But Levy is a genius for buying low and selling high. No one has ever thought of that business model before.

The money we are making is significant, but even that its limits. We actually having been spending a lot in the last few years. But we are not a club that will spend 300m over a Summer like City can. Thats simply how business works.

Blind, still a quality squad player and has easily shown his worth
Falcao, an expensive loan that didn't work out, but every man and his dog would have given that a chance.
Valdes, a flop but was free anyway wasn't he?
Martial, still huge potential, value probably not materially different for this reason
Depay, another flop but more down to the player than Van Gaal. A worthy acquisition and may still pay off with add on and buy back clauses.
Damian, bit average, but was cheap
Schneiderlin, didn't we basically get our money back?
Schweinsteigar, another flop but again small money on transfer fee and was probably worth a punt
Romero, top draw second keeper and maybe even worthy of number one spot.

How can the level of spending go down, when players values are going up to the level they are?
E.g even if we only buy two players next summer, you could be looking at, at least £60mil for a very good squad player - who knows what that will be if a top drawer player becomes available.
If we aren't able to compete for the very top players, then don't give a little snippets to the press that not only we can, but in fact, other clubs will be looking at us enviously.

They were awful. No two ways about that. With the biggest reason being that the man abandoned them himself. He signed players then had no idea what to do with them. That is just throwing away money.
Its a testament to Jose that some of this players have become useful to us.
Thing is, he Moyes and LVG to work with. Both of whom wasted a lot of money.

1. No way we should be working within constraints? Which dimension do you think the club exists in? Because in the one we do, there are these little things like revenue flow, EBITDA, PBT, PAT, contribution margins etc. that drive the investment decisions of businesses.
2. Yes. Ed did say that. We also own the record (as of now) for the world record fee and also potentially another deal that could breach this mark as well. In consecutive years. I reckon that supports his words. And I'd also grant him the benefit of doubt that he probably didn't mean to include pseudo-businesses like City and PSG in the "others" he spoke of.
Granted how he used the signings was a failure, but you can't say the signings themselves were as a whole, although granted a bit of a mixed bag.

But the effect of such spending will still be felt today though. Instead of making the same mistakes all over again, we have become more frugal with our spending. We arent afraid to spend when we need to(Pogba and Lukaku), but we are not reckless.

If he had stayed here another season, we would have had to sell most of them.
A manager signs players to fit his "philosophy". Van Gaal failed at that basic premise, and then largely abandoned most of those players just a few months after signing them.

Then that would be a ridiculously naive statement - because we won't be able to compete for the very best players.
I don't ever expect transfer fees to return to those sorts of levels but the bubble will definitely burst. The type of spending we're seeing currently isn't sustainable.
The transfer fees in % of turnover have been pretty low recently although the rumoured Neymar and Mbappé deals could change that. There is no bubble.

It's not a bubble. The money spent on transfers and indeed wages is entirely relative to the money in the game. Clubs are a business. Players are an asset.
That might be a bubble in itself though.
Especially as the growth has not been driven by organic growth but TV rights. If that market were to collapse, turnover for a lot of clubs would come tumbling down with it.
Can we just appreciate that in the space of a couple of months, Real might be about to drop over £200m on a couple of teenage strikers with 50 league games between them.
Or we can just be jealous... hope Martial kills it this year, and same for Rashford and Lingard.

Disregarding inflation over time is as dumb as ignoring currencies. £15 isn't $15, nor is it €15 or ¥15. Same goes for comparing fees over time, you just can't do it, it doesn't work that way.

Lack of anything happening even in the Twitter world is a little worrying.
Only the EPL TV deal had a really huge bump and most economic actors seem to have reacted passively to the spectacular growth rather than anticipating it and artificially raising prices which would be the signs of a bubble.
This is such a poor analysis of the past few seasons. Moyes spent hardly anything as he (and Woodward had a complete tragedy of a transfer window. He spent about 35 on Mata and 28 on Fellaini. But that was after a ton of players left and in a season when Chelsea and City spent about double that. The one season in recent history we've spent according to our wealth is the 2014 summer in which we bought Di Maria, Blind, Herrera, Falcao, and Rojo. Granted, Falcao and Di Maria didn't work out. But that's the risk with big transfers. In the 2015 summer season, we bought Martial, Depay, Bastian, Morgan and Shaw. But we sold Di Maria and a few others. If we had also sold De Gea as the board had planned all along, we would have broken even on transfers that year! So nothing really spent there. 2016 we finally start spending properly - I was hoping Pogba was an indication of our ambitions moving forward. I liked the Ibra signing but always felt we were still light up front, which turned out to be true. Bailly and Mkhi were astute signings. We spent over 150m last year and that was a smart decision the higher ups.
Now, we're entering a season without Rooney and Ibra's wages. We've gotten Bastian, Depay and Morgan off our books and brought in decent transfer money. City and Chelsea both finished far above us last year and have added to their teams. We need to follow suit, or simply get used to finishing outside the top 4. If the board want United to be successful, they'll free the funds and allow United to enter the marketplace. We don't require a Neymar or an Mbappe. But we do require at least three further high quality signings to compete this year.
