Well judging from the Reus thread, a lot of fans would prefer the smallings and Jones of this world rather than the Hummels. Romantic tradition and all that.

Its bizzare. The thing I find most amazing is what little some fans seem to think of the club. Constantly people refer to us potentially targetting top players as a waste of time, despite the obvious factors that suggest other wise, not least the shed load of money United can offer in line with all other top clubs.

Of course not all players will be interested. Some may be bothered by the lack of CL football this year (although I suspect most take a more long term view) or they may not want to move for other reasons, but the reality is that generally players move to clubs where big money is paid and where top managers are managing - firstly because they look after themselves financially, and secondly because those clubs are usually the clubs who are competing for trophies.

As it is there is only one wany to ensure you dont get the best - and that's not to try. The club are (it seems) showing ambition which is positive for the long term. Its clear we've not always competed for the best players in the past but we clearly can now so why so many people on here think they're more clued up that anyone else about who will and wont come in I don't know.

Probably because we don't have a track record of signing top players at the top of their game - in fact only two I can think of are RVP (who was near the end of his contract) and Veron. You could argue Mata but he is probably a notch below the very top and was out of favour at his club.

Maybe, like LVG said at his presser, he wants to spend three weeks watching Cleverley and Fellaini first
:D I don't believe that for a second, he would only need to do 1 training session involving quick short passing to realize that we need to act fast!.

Seriously...It's either on or off, a different amount, a bid accepted/not accepted, house getting sold, or something else every half hour for the last two weeks..I am exhausted reading about it

No offence intended here but I've got far more serious stuff to worry about in the real world to get 'exhausted' by transfer gossip. But each to their own :)

As I've said on here before, the man himself said he is going to enjoy his holiday until the 28th at which point he will return and discuss/decide his future, anything written before that date is 99.9% bollocks, chill and wait for him to come back at the end of the week and we will then see

Aye, by the end of next week something definitive will happen I think.

 What are we thinking?!

Exactly mate Bendtner & Snodgrass are just the tip of the iceberg, Senderos, Joe Cole, Kieran Richardson, Steven Reid, Rio Ferdinand, Mame Diouf, Phil Bardsley to name just a few have moved clubs this summer but for all Ed's billy big bollocks talk i bet we didn't even make a bid for one of them.

Madrid rejects - Makelele, Robben, Sneijder, Ozil and potentially Di Maria and Khedira quite ridiculous isn't it.

Neither did City, or Chelsea, Monaco or PSG. I dont see that it matters. The club offers a top manager, the chance to play in arguably the most high profile league in the world, a realistic chance of winning major trophies and a huge pay packet - possibly pushed up even higher because the club are so deserate to rebuild. Thats the position - and based on that, a lot of top professionals will likely be interested.

Hummels (purely as an example) may not have realistically wanted to leave Dortmund for a non-CL club - but the chance to be part of something exciting under Van Gaal, and the chance to ear three times his salary might very well appeal to him. One top player comesin, others will often follow - for the pay packet, and also because cluubs with top players usually win things.

They just can't help themselves.

Since their 2002 Champions League win they have won the league title 4 times, Champions League once and a couple of Copa Del Rays. All whilst having the aforementioned players, plus Figo, Beckham, Casillas, Raul, Zidane, Ronaldo (the), Ronaldo (Cristiano), Kaka ... It really is an utter shambles that those honours are all they have to show for nearly just over a decade of ridiculous spending, coupled with their obvious pulling power and a league that has mostly been contested by 2 superpowers.

Could end up adding Isco to that list maybe next year too.
