As for the alternatives, I'd like Schneiderlin, since I've a feeling that Strootman will be joining us eventually.

I'd love Firmino at United though, probably my favourite player atm in all leagues. It'd be a waste to deploy him as a wingback/CM though. Although I suppose if Herrera plays slightly deeper and Firmino pushed up a bit it could possibly work.
Can we just forget about Arturo Vidal now please, as good a signing he'd be it's not going to happen I don't think. On to the next saga....

Because, mainly, the first part of your post! I've spent the last few years despising him and I would just be gutted if we ended up signing him. And his ability doesn't make up for it. He's not that good at all, IMO.
