I really don't see Van Gaal not rating Vidal tbh. He specially singled him out before the Chile-Netherlands match and also wanted him when he was the manager of Bayern. I think that the player didn't wanted to leave Juve or Juve didn't want to sell.

So am I to take it from that that we were trying to buy players not agreed by LVG? If true, good to see we've managed to learn the lessons of last summer, just in time to make some brand new ones.
I thought Mitten said that Vidal was high on van Gaals wanted list and he was sure that a deal was going to happen, or am i mistaken?

It doesn't add up for me. Both Shaw and Herrera were lined up before LVG got here and he gave the green light for both - which he told us- so I can't see why that would be any different for Vidal, a player that he's reportedly a massive fan of.

No, me either. Otherwise you're left thinking that LVG is telling the club to go after players and then changing his mind once they've gotten down the line.

If it's true Van Gaal turned down Vidal you have to question him, his one of the best CM's in Europe at the moment.

Actually you don't, because he's interested in players that fit his system, not flavor of the month muppet signings.

I have to agree, I'm praying the "seemingly" part of that quote is him referring to little movement on Vidal. I hope we don't have another Fergie who for some unknown reason hates central midfielders

Yup! Fecking hell, it was never ON in the first place anyway - Vidal was never going to be an easy signing and Van Gaal knows what he is doing, far better than us gimps.

His versatility would be useful but he'd be backup for left back, center back and defensive midfield. He's average but we need back up in those positions so its not too bad. For £17m though I'd be hesitant. If he was around £10m or so then I'd be all for it.

We have Reese James for LB cover and we don't need CM cover, at best that is what Cleverley is, we need another top class CM starter.

Vidal isn't a flavour of the month, he's been one of the best CM's in the world for 3 years now and plenty here wanted him when he was going cheap at Bayer Leverkusen, he also was singled out for praise more than once by van Gaal and clearly fits into his system.

How is Vidal a flavor of the month? His one of the best midfielders in Europe and would suit any system Van Gaal would use due to how complete of a player he is. Herrera wasn't a target for him he just gave the green light and now has rejected Vidal and also possibly Kroos who the feck does he want then?

I wouldn't question him at all. We already have Herrera to play in Vidal's position, so it makes a lot of sense for LVG to go for a defensive midfielder next.

Kroos would have been perfect in this system, too:

-------Rooney--RVP--------
----------Mata--------------
--------------Herrera-------
Shaw---Kroos-------Rafael
---Evans--Jones-Smalling--
-----------De Gea----------

He's used to playing as the lone DM after Guardiola had him do it and he's fantastic in possession.

I don't know if I believe that LVG turned down signing him.

Vidal isn't the only midfielder in world football - just saying.

Well they have to be a top quality defensive midfielder. And with Strootman not fit that's basically no one.

As soon as Cortese left last year a load of Southampton journos wrote that the new lady wasn't enamoured of football and would look to sell their big stars, replace them with cheaper alternatives and either cut back on investment and sell the club, or look to repeat the selling trick with the new bunch. Doesn't look a million miles away at the moment.

Oh yeah. Good point. Definitely a stench of asset stripping from all this. Isn't she a washing machine magnate or something?

It's much more likely Real blew us out of the water for Kroos and Juventus simply don't want to sell Vidal or we don't want to match their valuation. LVG defnitely rates Vidal very highly, no way would he turn down the opportunity to sign him. Ahhh, onto the next target, even if it hurts I have to admit, I would simply love Vidal at United.

I refuse to believe that if Moyesy stayed we'd have possibly signed a midfield trio of William, Kroos and Vidal

Who cares who he wants, as long as he builds a squad that can fit his vision and plays attractive football.

There's plenty but we'll sign De Jong and then watch everyone complain.

I don't see why people would after seeing the potential of a Herrera and Mata combination. They have bags of creativity between them. Now we need someone defensively capable to compliment them.

Ideally that player would be someone like Javi Martinez but if we can't get someone like that De Jong would be a decent stop gap.

Name a better one that we could sign in your opinion?

We're not Real Madrid. We can't sign the "best players" right now. We are rebuilding.

And there are tonnes of players out there - I'll leave our Scouts and Van Gaal do their jobs whilst I sit back and relax seeing as I'm not paid to make them decisions :)

De Jong doesn't exactly fit that bill does he? His an average footballer.

If it is De Jong he is after then just sign him and get it over with. It will put a stop to all the bull$hit that has been flying around of late. That we haven't signed that thug already is a reason for me to believe that we are not after him.

Blind would actually be a really good signing, not underwhelming at all IMO. It's always good to have a consistently good utility style player that can fill numerous positions and get the job done on a good level.

That said, I'd want it to be lower than 17 million for sure. Ajax might push for around that though considering he's only 24 and was the Dutch player of the year last season. No clue how long he's got left on his contract. I'd be happy with the signing, would just want it to be at a good price though.

It wouldn't have mattered even if he did. Talented as they are they wouldn't look like much when they are told to sit deep and hoof it out to Young and Valencia.

You're probably right but he would've probably got sacked by the new year too if that was the case.

I won't. We have to be realistic in this window. Herrera, De Jong and Strootman in Jan?
De Jong is scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Surely they could find a better alternative, and I don't know why everyone is certain Strootman will come in January Roma won't sell if they are trying to win the league.

Hopefully you are right, and I think many here are deluding themselves if they think Herrera and Mata in a midfield 3 is going to be sustainable in the PL.

A signing can be good and underwhelming at the same time.

Not the point, If LVG did reject Vidal & Kroos, it infact shows that we could buy the best in the world. I'm ok with signing players for the system though don't believe the above rejection is true either.

If he isn't interested in vidal and theres a genuine quote from him saying "not a player im keen on right now" or whatever, im going straight to the bookies to put money down on Strootman to united. It's just going to happen if he isn't in for vidal.

We have enough of that in our squad. I think we need top class.

We need top class. Blind would make a decent signing when we clear the deadwood but not while we're still filled with it. And as a midfielder his looked bang average every time.

But pointless signing him in the summer if he won't be fit until December. You won't get an actual quote anyway.

Why is everyone saying Strootman in January as if it's already a done deal? Do you think Strootman is going to want to leave if Roma are in a title race? It also depends on how we're doing too, is he really going to want to leave Roma for United if we're languishing down in 5th or 6th? I know thats rather unlikely, but still, who knows whats going to happen.

I do think we really need another CM to go with Herrera. Cleverley hasn't really improved at all over recent years, Fletcher might never get back to his pre illness level and Fellaini isn't United quality at all. Adding to the fact that Carrick is going to be 33 on Monday, whilst he's still a crucial part of our midfield, we can't depend on him as much as we used to be able too. We need someone of class quality to partner Herrera.
