Vidic made the most starts apart from Evra in defence.

But he wouldn't next year. He'd been a shadow of his peak for the last 2 years. Ever since that oaf landed on him and wrecked his knee.

If we sign Cavani and make no serious effort to get Vidal, Woodward and LVG will be receiving a strongly worded and heartfelt letter from me. I'll hand write it and everything, so they know I'm serious.

we'd just be going mad Kev Keegan style all out attack is all.

Something like this for the front 5

Absolutely. Lost Vidic, Evra, Rio, Giggs, Büttner (!!), Bebe (!!!) and got Herrera and Shaw. That's weaker, no doubt.
But we've gained Herrara, Shaw and most of all we have got Van gaal and got rid of Moyes.
I agree the loss of Vidic, Rio and Evra is going to be an issue. However, if we're honest we will only be missing their experience, they have been on the decline for some time on the pitch, maybe one more season would have been to much, who knows.

The headline on the paper le 10 Sport says "Cavani to leave otherwise nothing, the sale of Edinson Cavani is the key to the Parisian transfer window
Part of their articles from a couple of days ago:
UNE SITUATION INCERTAINE

Ovacion rappelle l’intérêt de Manchester United et l’obligation du PSG de vendre un joueur avec une forte valeur marchande s’il veut conclure l’arrivée d’Angel Di Maria. Comme l’a affirme Cavani, « le marché des transferts est imprévisible », mais du côté des dirigeants parisiens, il n’y aurait aucune intention de vendre l’Uruguyen.

An interview with Cavani by Ovacion: reminding of United's interest and the need for PSG to sell a player with a high market value if they want to conclude the arrival of Di Maria. As Cavani says " the transfer market is unpredictable" but from the parisian directors; there is no intention to sell the uruguayan

It's a daft rumour, as if we are going to give PSG the money they need to buy Di Maria whilst complying with FFP.

I would have thought we would do the direct opposite in the hope PSG conclude they can't afford him without running the risk of been booted out of the CL, thus Di Maria comes here and we have a player we actually need, rather than one we certainly do not.

If the stupid feckers hadn't blown £50 million on Luiz they could have had this wrapped up ages ago, and clipped Chelsea's wings in the transfer market at the same time.

I don't care about next year because we don't know.

I'm arguing the fact that you said he wasn't a regular, which is incorrect. He started every game he was fit for.

If that auto makes you a regular, Hargreaves would count as a regular

When you put it down in a formation it makes even less sense. This has to be the most unusual, yet persistent, rumour I can think of.

I didn't even dare try and weasel Kagawa in there...

My sentiment exactly

One more season of Smalling and Cleverley will be too much for a lot of us.

we both know it won't be any slower. It'll just have more "what's going on, there's 21 days left" type posts instead.

Yeah, but tweets wise it will go quiet. If it wasn't for the Vidal stuff then we wouldn't have had anything this week.

I agree, from terrible to average.

He has all the attributes to be a top centre back though. Great in the air, very tall, pacy etc. Certainly prefer him to Evans in either a high ball or foot race situation.

the idea of us trying to get Vermaelen by paying a fee AND giving Jones or Smalling is one of the more ridiculous transfer stories of recent years.

Smalling at right back.

Smalling at centre back is an entirely different prospect.

He is just not very good IMO, can't pass, and just looks so dam awkward on a football pitch, happy to be proven wrong but for me no way near United quality, LB, or CB.

I think that's a bit selective memory. No doubt Vidic and Evra are on the wane but Evra actually had a pretty decent season last year (better than the two before IMO) and while Shaw will no doubt be a great player for us in the long-term, I personally don't think he will be an upgrade on Evra this season. Vidic was still, after all, our best defender and we're looking extremely weak back there now. We'll still look weak even if we buy Vermaelen.

Herrera is a great purchase but all in all, I'd say we've regressed slightly. Squad-wise, that is, if you factor in LVG vs. Moyes, then I'm more optimistic.

Has the attributes yes but at 24 doesn't show them enough. Yes he was right back most of last season but that to me shows even dithering Dave didn't trust him at CB either. The previous season SAF played him right back from time to time also. Surely with Rios back problems, Vidic Knee problems etc he should have established himself as a CB.

Even this game against LA he was by far the most uncomfortable looking. The guy just shits himself when the ball comes near him and his positioning is terrible.

Sorry but for me he is the one losing his place when we sign another CB.

What I don't get is, people are saying the likes of Rio, etc didn't play much last season, so why would they be missed.

The same reason we finished 7th. Because they didn't play (albeit it, they are not what they used to be, but that is up to us to improve the squad)

But when Rio did play, he was generally worse than someone like Evans or Smalling would have been.

For me, if we replace him in terms of the numbers, we won't miss him at all from last season. Same cannot be said for Vidic, who was inconsistent last season but still good in a lot of games, and brilliant in a couple, most notably the home leg against Bayern.

My what a pedantic lot we have in here. Any negative twatter rumours regarding a target and the whole world is going to end and "no value in the market"..."how could we turn him down" etc etc comments come out. In the next 12hours I predict a probably bs positive link and suddenly muppetstarbation will resume.
LVG has stated he wants to have a look at the squad first before deciding on movement of players....he is currently doing that....And that is ALL we know from LVG and ALL it appears anybody know be it the press, the likes of Mitten, the twatter "I want some more follows lets rumour some shit" brigade etc etc. One of the things Woodward has said is that from speaking to agents there are a lot of players interested in playing for the club regardless of CL football and that we are able to spend unlike most other clubs. This could be a load of horse manure but for all we know we may already have deals lined up and LVG is assesing whether to finalise them. I still think we need at least two or three more signings and we have had a few summer now to be fair of underwhelming transfers with the added piss off of the muppet signing that doesnt happen but lets wait and see what transpires as I cant believe we wont see another two players through the door who ever they may be, then we can whine or muppetstarbate when we know who they are when/if the come.
Completely agree!

This is what I was leaning towards though.
Replacing Rio of last season with a decent CB will keep us in the same position we was last year. We need to replace him / them with quality rather than a quantity figure.
That is how our midfield turned to what it is now

So many gullible people believing anything they read. Do people believe we will leave the squad as it is  There are no itk's this year. No one outside of the club no feck all

Will be nice to see more of the fans who come across as hating most of our (usually English) players, decide to call it a day!

I'm hating on them because they are both so terribly average. They are both scared of the ball and just want to pass it backwards or out of play.
After watching them for few seasons now I would be happy if they call it a day.

Also I couldn't care less what country they are from.

They can't. Even if they sell Toure, he isn't going for enough to fund the transfer, especially if they're splurging on Mangala.
