UK Riots (with the exception of Manchester which has its own thread)

I was about to suggest getting our space program back up and running and lob the feckers on the moon

We formed the United Kingdom Space Agency last year, maybe they can help...

The Americans have theirs based on huge sprawling sites in Texas and Florida, ours is based in a business park in Swindon.

Serious problems in Thornton Heath apparently.

Obviously not, but I would be a part of a much wider strategy to make it more difficult, and increase the pressure on rioters. As ridiculous a notion as it is, the fact it is supposed to rain across the south tonight will feed into that as well.

Though in a State of Emergency there would be far greater powers imposed, such as detention, curfews, etc.

Yes, but it's not going to stop the rioters, or deter them anymore than keeping those sites and services on. The main affect it will have is for people trying to get updates on areas for their friends, family and own safety, as well as reducing mobile coverage during a time when people might need it most.

If action is to be taken, it has to be more than that, and focused entirely at the people involved, rather than taking away every day liberties that innocent people need, more so then the rioters.

More action would be taken as I indeed said, but it would be largely widespread and have to cover large swathes of the country involving people who have nothing to do with what is going on.

The feckers upstairs who run the shop have opened it back up again after a mass clearance and are back open for business

They haven't bothered to fix the huge holes in the shop front glass and they've certainly not bothered to install security shutters. I wonder how that leaves us down stairs. Is this just inviting more trouble ?

Maybe tonight we might get a fire

It should be action focused on stopping the rioters directly, not reducing the services of people who aren't involved, or innefectively deterering those who are invoved.

LBC - Idiots on there, "put plastic bullets into anyone out there past 9pm".

So you shoot everyone who is out there at 9pm, then circle round and shoot all the people who are still out there. Once they start walking over, shoot them again because they are still out there. Imagine if you walked 30 minutes to get there? You would be shot about 30 times before you got home.

That's how we roll in Belfast :smirk:

The police have played a blinder IMO.

They sat off as much as possible, and now who look like the bad guys - the looters and rioters.

Who looks like the bad guys if the police go in tear gassing, water cannoning and busting heads - the police.

Now they can go in and bust some heads and the looters/rioters have zero public sympathy.

Just heard my first conspiracy theory about why the police stood off as long as they did.

It was a tactic to allow the government rush through a load of draconian legislation in the aftermath of these riots which will help them police the inevitable much more serious and widespread civil unrest when the depression really starts to bite.

As far as conspiracy theories go, it's not the worst...

Did anyone just see 'Big Jim' the shop owner on sky news? Kay Burley asked him to describe exactly what happened and he said it was black people in hoodies, and when she kept banging on about white people being there too, he said "well yeah I was the white one there"

 fecking hell.

what is clear to me from last night is that the emergency services have lost so to speak. because of the riots the fire brigade are unable to get to fires and the ambulance service unable to get to calls. SE18 was declared a no go zone for several hours it got so bad. however nice to see that skys sensitive and caring kay burley is out interviewing people :roll eyes:

I'm wearing my civvies in to work tonight and carrying my uniform in a bag. clearly anyone in a uniform is a target

Should imagine the glass and shutter fitters are overrun with work atm. Will take a while to get the windows boarded up too, if they choose to go down that route.

If it's any comfort the looters will probably move to another area tonight, they cleaned your area out last night.

Try and keep safe though Kinky. (Packing a small bag in case you have to move quickly might not be a bad idea).

we should send over a few thousand Gardai to help out

the guys who 'policed' the Ireland-England match back in the early 90's would be a good start

Yeah, did you see the old white guy??!

"THE ANARCHISTS ARE GOING TO BURN DOWN BUCKINGHAM PALACE NEXT."

I can understand the reticence to use water cannons, rubber bullets etc but surely the rioters & residents don't deserve Kay Burley? What is this country coming to?

I'd love it if one of the London Caftards dressed up as a Superhero and got themselves on the news

Ah fecking hell, it's started over here with a few shops, but nothing overly serious yet, tonight is going to be shit.

I need to admit this now, Freddie Flintoff earlier tweeted that he hopes the police win tonight. I informed him, via the medium of twitter, that if all else fails, he should be allowed to bowl several overs at the rioters.

I do believe I've just won the English middle class game, via fighting rioters with a medium-fast/fast English bowler.

I'm seeing it live on sky. She was squirming and he as adamant that they were all black

Thing is, you can't even call a spade a spade at the moment. We all know this isn't one particular race predominantly involved, every fecker is joining in. But that doesn't mean in small pockets it can't be a group of only whites, or blacks or asians doing it!

That is Police capturing a looter from a shop in Clapham by the way.

It seems there is alot of public support building for the cops in the capital.

Across the nation now I'd say.
