We do rely too much on Nistelrooy and when he's not in the game for whatever reason we look half the side.

To go into another season without a strong back-up striker is insane.

You may well laugh but I think Phillips (Sunderland) would have been a decent signing for us this summer.
He's a very direct, physical striker available at a cheap enough price to take a chance on.
He'd be coming to the club under no illusions of being first choice yet desperate to impress to get back into the England set-up.

Sometimes the short term answer is the best option.

I think I will.... ;)

after watching scholes performance today, i worry if he takes a knock or is out for an extended period of time, who will pick up the role of playmaker in the middle, giggs? keano? jimmy pakistan? maybe another attacking mid/striker

I agree with you. Last year, everybody was asking what would we do if RVN got injured? I was equally worried about Scholesy being out for any length of time. Kleberson is supposed to be a very good passer of the ball. I think we're going to have to hope that he's as good as they say he is because Fergie's already gone on record that we're not bringing in any more midfielders.

Loads of positives to take into the new season (apart from the obvious)
Tim Howard was very good. He came for crosses and dealt with them very well. Seems to have settled well and the defenders look like they've got confidence in him.
Nicky Butt played very well and how the ref thought it was a free kick is beyond me.
Ole dragged Cole all over the place, need to work on his crossing a bit if he is going to stay on the right
Djemba looks like a great buy.
But the Man of the Match IMO was Scholesy, his pasing was fantastic and, unusally for Scholsey, a few neat tricks thrown in.

All in all a great start and thank god football's back

His crossing has been fine. He's never going to be a David Beckham but last season some of his deliveries were as good as Becks, and he offers things that Becks couldn't.

Some people seem to be waiting for him to have a poor game so they can say we haven't got a real replacement for Beckham or whatever. Well, maybe we haven't - but Beckham wasn't perfect in every game, and no player ever will be.

I think we will miss Beckham in some ways, but so far our football has been a lot faster and I think I prefer what Ole - or any other similar player - can provide.

Like you say, he pulled Ashley Cole all over the place, which Beckham wouldn't have done, because Becks didn't take people on very often.

I agree about Scholesy, and also thought Keano had a superb game.

Considering the heat, I thought it was a great game.
