Big European Night at Old Trafford.

The atmosphere better be tonking.

Great game in prospect.

Tues 1945

ESPN and I assume Sky/ITV for the viewers on either side of the lake.

;) Haven't done it for a while and I was bored. A trip to the general forum required maybe. :nervous:

I think we'll start to see our first-choice line up given a go in the next couple of weeks.

Don't really know what our lineup will be for this game. We played a 4-3-2-1 last time, but I don't know if that would work this time. Fortune isn't free to play in midfield as Silvestre is out. Seeing as he played wide at times on the left, I don't know if someone like Butt could take his position.

So I'll say:

Howard
Gary Rio O'Shea Fortune
Keane Phil
Ronaldo/Fletcher Forlan Giggs
Ruud

Better get ready for the Scousers v United thread as the ref is blowing his whistle for the Rangers game. ;)

I'd love to see us really clobber those bastards, specially after their wanker fans were in the Newbie going on about how they gave some reds a good kicking outside theground.

I'd love to see him give Fletch a go in the middle - so wasted on the right

-Gaz-Rio-Josh-QF
--Phil--Keano--
-Ron-Fletch-Giggsy
----Ruud----

Or with Diego on the right.

I was at the first game what a fecking atmosphere I thought we did really well to win in that atmosphere.
It's no wonder they hadn't been beaten at home in Europe for 4 years prior.
Lets hope we can generate the same passion on Tuesday..So come on you prawn muchers sing up :)

Will be a comfortable 3-0 win IMO

Let's save Keano & Ronaldo for the Scousers, Djemba2 and Forlan for those places. :smirk:

Keano has had ten minutes action from the last three games. It's ridiculous to suggest he needs a rest. We should play our best team.

What makes you think we can afford to rest Keane? Rangers will be no pushovers, and this game could decide if we win the group.

Plus, as Gazza said, Keane's had enough rest.

Either Silvestre or O'Shea to partner RIo. Ronaldo on the right. Fletcher or Forlan to partner Ruud. Based on form, it should be Forlan.

IMHO Rangers are pretty awful away from home and I think we will be able to beat them with the team we put out against Portsmouth.

Whether we win the group or not is more like to be based on our game against Stuttgart. :smirk:

Rangers' preparations for the UEFA Champions League tie with Manchester United have been rocked by the confirmation that influential Fernando Ricksen is out of the Old Trafford encounter.
The Dutch international, rumoured to be a target for Serie A side Udinese, hurt his ankle during the Scottish Premier League clash with Partick Thistle, and examinations have proved that the player has no chance of being fit for Tuesday's match.

"We'll have to change things around a bit," stressed Gers boss Alex McLeish. "But don't think for a minute that any of the players who will be travelling to Manchester in the morning will be going with fear.

"Ricksen's problem is not as bad as first feared but he is still not going to make it in time to face United. He should be fine for next weekend."

Tough-tackling Ricksen has the sort of experience the Glasgow side require going into the United match, as The Red Devils are firm favourites to win and virtually clinch their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

After winning 1-0 at Ibrox in a tense affair, United will be confident of repeating the three-point haul against their injury-hit opponents.

Rangers are also missing German Christian Nerlinger, and star man Ronald de Boer is on the club's long-term injury list, but Michael Mols is fit to play.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson is refusing to be over-confident as he fears Rangers' classy midfielder Mikel Arteta, who shone again in the win over Partick.

"We can get a result," said Ferguson. "But I'm not treating it lightly by any means.

"Rangers are here to get a result and make progress in the group.

"They have people who pass the ball, nice footballers like Mikel Arteta.

"We have to make sure they don't have the same joy as they did at Ibrox because Arteta ran the show in the first half."

Doh! I thought I was in the Stretford end tonight, but I've just checked again and its East Stand Tier 1 Upper. That means my left ear will be in for some serious Glasweigen abuse tomorrow night. I'll be doing my bit to send them a bit of Manc drawl in return

CANT FOOKIN WAIT

COME ON YOU REDS !!!

Damn, am working late 2morrow will have to do highlights later on   Anyway come on u reds a good win will put us in good form for the lousy pool. I also like the idea of bring ronaldo on the second half against liverpool, Bring it on!!.

i call on all US Reds to have a "red" out. say f off to work and watch the match where ever you can. come on what's more important food for the kids or football?

Why risk it? We should be aiming to win every game.

Your plan makes no sense Cal.

Keano has played ten minutes football in about two weeks.
He doesn't need a rest.
He can play two games in six days no bother.
This is not a game to rest players.
Keane must play.

Have to agree. I hope Fergie doesn't do a Fulham. He should play the strongest team.

I guess Keano will play, but the point is we don't need to win every game in this competition, qualifying for the 2nd round with 18pts or 10pts makes no difference as long as we edge ahead of Stuttgart into 1st place.

We need Keano at his best against the Skausers. :smirk:

I am 100% sure that Keano will play both against Rangers and the scousers, Unless, god forbid, he gets injured.
I am not sure though who will play alongside him in midfield.
Butt, Phil or Djemba, or will SAF go for a
Phil---Keane--Butt---Fortune, lineup?
Me thinks so, experience is everything in the CL,
and this midfield sure is experienced.

Phil---Keane--Butt---Fortune, lineup?- I don't think so, even though they are experienced why would fergie play 3 defensive midfielders at home??, and anyway phil neville is crap on the wing.

Forlan forces his way into Champions League reckoning

PARIS (AFP) - Uruguay international Diego Forlan has become a real force for Manchester United, pushing himself into the reckoning for their return match at home to Rangers in the Champions League.

Striker Forlan has taken time to settle at Old Trafford but his goal and general performance in their 3-0 victory over Portsmouth on Saturday means he is finally becoming the player boss Alex Ferguson thought he would be.

The supremacy of both Manchester United and fellow Premiership side Chelsea in their pools will be put to the test this week.

United's 1-0 victory against Rangers at Ibrox two weeks ago has been a huge boost to their European campaign and Ferguson's men defend their lead in Group E with a home tie against the Scots.

Chelsea's 2-1 victory at home to Lazio has also left them top of Group G but surely manager Claudio Ranieri would be happy with a point in the Rome return to keep up their momentum.

Forlan's form has been a real plus for United especially with the absences of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Paul Scholes and Kleberson through injury.

Though it is not clear whether Forlan will start against Rangers, his goal a game during the last three matches has brought an acknowledgement from Ferguson he will be difficult to drop.

Ferguson said: "He seems to be getting better - he could have had a hat-trick in the each of the last two games but today he's linked well and scored his goal and did his job.

"When players are scoring goals it does make it difficult to leave them out, I have always felt that, and he definitely comes into the reckoning for Tuesday."

The Uruguayan himself admitted that patience was paying off.

"Every time, every game you hope to be involved, and we all hope we will be. I always train hard and try to prepare myself well so when I get a chance I do as good as I can - and then the manager has to decide," said Forlan.

Rangers' German midfielder Christian Nerlinger has been ruled out of the match however and Dutchman Fernando Ricksen is extremely doubtful.

The double injury blow is a serious setback for Rangers where defeat could be fatal to their chances of advancing to the knockout stage of the tournament.

United may field Ronaldo against Rangers

November 4, 2003

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson may use a fresh Cristiano Ronaldo on Rangers after resting the Portuguese winger during the last few games.

Ferguson did not play Ronaldo in the match against Rangers at Ibrox and also left him out of the starting line-ups for United's last two domestic games, believing the 18-year-old has had too much expectation on his shoulders.

But the Portuguese starlet came off the bench on Saturday to score his first goal for United during a 15-minute cameo and Ferguson hinted he could be involved at some point against Rangers in the Champions League re-match at Old Trafford.

"What we realised after the game we lost in Stuttgart is maybe we asked too much of him," Ferguson said Tuesday.

"We keep forgetting he is only 18 and with young players in the past we have given them spells where they are in the team and then rested them.

"That's not to say he will not be involved tomorrow. We have rested him for the last two games, and I think at this stage of his career he needs the freshness, we can't ask him to play every game.

"We just have to monitor his progress far more carefully than other players in the squad."

Ferguson, who on Thursday celebrates 17 years as United manager, has admitted his side need to play better than in the 1-0 win at Ibrox a fortnight ago - and has instructed his players to be more aggressive.

"Rangers have done very little wrong this season and we have to make sure they don't control the tempo of the match the way they did in the first half at Ibrox," he said.

"I thought they controlled the rhythm of the game through [Mikel] Arteta - nobody tackled him. We sat back - even Roy Keane was sat back in front of the back four - and we don't want that to happen.

"I'm hoping we are far more positive and aggressive in our defending," added Ferguson.

I hope Ruud scores - and preferably a better goal than the last Rangers v Man Utd match.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll win 2-0 or so, hope Keano starts as it will make a big difference, if we score a couple of goals SAF can take him off and rest him for the 'poo on Sunday
