Fabien Barthez is doubtful for the Portsmouth game, as is John O'Shea. He came off on Wednesday with a calf strain and we're not sure of his recovery time so I don't think he'll make it. Ruud van Nistelrooy trained yesterday, he'll train today and he should be available tomorrow.

We know the FA Cup starts in January, so we're ready for that. A home draw is all you can ask for in the Cup, we've got a nice draw against Portsmouth who are top of the First Division. We know we can't take the game lightly and we won't. I know from my own experience of teams at the top of the First Division that they will come here full of confidence, they'll bring 9000 fans with them and it should be a great atmosphere - the kind of atmosphere I like. It will be a real Cup tie atmosphere.

It's a great tournament, the FA Cup, a marvellous tournament. I just hope we get a better run in it than we did last year. It's important to the club.

Portsmouth are playing very well. I watched them down at Watford the other night and they played some excellent football. They're confident and have a lot of experience in vital positions. We all know Shaka Hislop from his days at West Ham, there's Paul Merson, Steve Stone, Todorov, Deon Burton - experienced players who have played at Old Trafford in the Premiership before. That will help the ones who haven't been here before.

They're a team we respect greatly, and when you add the experience of Harry Redknapp and Jim Smith they're a good team. They've been fantastic. They were nearly relegated last year and the turnaround has been amazing. I'm not that surprised though, as the ability that they both have in the transfer market is good. They've been very clever in that and the motivation they've given the whole club is great. They've got full houses every week, which is terrific.

We've always had a good goalscoring contribution from midfield players over the years. Last year David Beckham scored eleven goals, Ryan Giggs always scores, as does Paul Scholes. We've been lucky with that.

Enjoy the game.

I bet we`ll defeat them. :D

yeah~ with Keano leading us!!!!!!!

I think wre gunna loose to :( . So much to the point, if we win, im willing to start a new threadi in the utd forum with me singing "im a little tea-pot" :( Thats how un-confident i am, at the moment anyway. Cos basically, the players dont seem to care about the f.a cup and as said above, its ponpeys cup final

Don`t spread your pessimism/realism over here.

I think Roy Carroll will play. And if there is any doubt over John O'Shea he shouldn't play, with the rest of the defenders fit again we have plenty of cover so why risk him. The question is whether Mickey will continue at Centre Back or be moved to the left with Phil at Left Back.
I think Keane and Seba will continue in midfield. The more games they play together the better. They need to get it sorted, so they are comfortable playing in Centre Midfield together.
Another question is whether it will be 2 up front or one striker with an advanced midfielder. Personally i'd like to see us go with 2 up front. From what i've heard Pompey are missing 2 key defenders.

Pompey will make a real game of it. They have players with premiership experience, Todorov, Merson etc. and Harry Redknapp is a manager i have great respect for. I hope they don't freeze on the day, i want to see them have a go.

If we get ahead early it should be fairly comfortable but like all games the longer we go at 0-0 the more the opposition grow in confidence, especially in the cup. I don't make predicitions for cup games, but i think we can win well

since fab is out id like to see ricardo given a go, why was he bought if aint gunna play him when fab is injured/un-avaliable etc.

I'd be more inclined to say "on the 8th day, God made Eric"

No my phrase is "On the 8th day God made Becks" thou I know what u`re talking bout. ;)

I guess Carroll must play he`s more reliable imho.

Agreed. Carroll is a solid keeper. A more than able number 2. I don't think has that, something special, to make him our number 1. I have no problems with him coming in if Fab gets injured.

when i watch ricardo play, i think its just me who gets that...aora about him, this real presence, despite his in-experience. Like a presence that fab doesnt have, however great fab is. I know i'll get shot for this but he reminds me a bit of schemichael when he joined us, purely based on his presence, he seems more gobby than any keeper weve had in a long time. Maybe its just me

There's a flaw in that sentence. :D

Man Utd: Carroll, Gary Neville, Ferdinand, Blanc, Silvestre, Beckham, Keane, Phil Neville, Richardson, van Nistelrooy, Giggs.

Subs: Ricardo, Stewart, Scholes, Forlan, Brown.

Portsmouth: Hislop, Primus, Foxe, Tavlaridis, Harper, Stone, Diabate, Quashie, Taylor, Todorov, Merson.

Subs: Kawaguchi, Crowe, Pericard, Burton, O'Neil.

Should be Brown and Silvestre imo. Or at least Brown and Ferdinand.

And Diego should be starting.

Obviously Fergie's thinking is about giving a run out for players who need it and rest to those who deserve it, and I think Brown certainly deserves it. He was thrown into the deep after returning and hasn't been rested since.

Ole has been dropped, I see. Deservedly so.

It's on BBC Radio 5 Live if you can get that online. I think you can.

Giggsy gives it the little eyebrows at the near post from a corner, saved by hislop

Ruud nearly scores, blocked by a defender
