United linked with van Gaal in the meeja

First thing he'll do is make RVP the club captain.
This would be sickening Dutch favouritism. People complain about Moyes' treatment of Rooney, but he's been a key figure for the club for 10 years and displays leadership qualities on the pitch.

van Persie has only been at the club 2 seasons and was a poor leader at Arsenal and has had a negative, sulking attitude on the pitch this season, reminiscent of Berbatov.

I know nothing about his style of management or football. But the Dutch seem to like their nice football

Nah, I'd still take RVP.

I'm getting a bit annoyed with Rooney's royal treatment at the club. Since the club's Moyesification, Rooney has walked around like the Sultan of Salford as if he owns the place.

Imagine Rooney's face.

No, that's a potato, try harder.

I wouldn't give it to either, it's purely an ambassadorial role and they're 2 of the most difficult characters at the club. One is a toerag who has tried to force moves to rivals twice and is a dickhead to his teammates while the other has been phoning in performances for half of his time at the club. Give it to De Gea or Fletcher.

It wouldn't be a popular choice and likely too early to happen, but I would like that to happen. He is already our best player (IMO) and the only player who has performed for us on the highest level for every game this season.

Always on.

I'm not sure who would be the right choice though. One thing Van Gaal, if he is appointed, would have to sort out is the lack of leaders and proper characters in our squad. You look at the senior players at the club and they've set a terrible example this season while the team has lacked spirit too often.

My concern would be how can we expect him to fix this broken team in time for next season when he is going to spend the summer in Brazil?

Getting the right manager is our priority, but the team also needs a lot of attention over the summer. And that's not just bringing people in... that's putting people in their place and making sure others can step up.
I think possibly for any manager coming in that their training ground work will show through fairly quickly. We lacked the ability to break down defences this season, our strikers didnt get the chances they usually get so hopefully the next manager can get us scoring goals again. I dont think the WC will hurt too much.

I said in the Moyes thread, you don't need a Moyes inspired 11 month fact-finding mission to address the issues we have. Most if not all top coaches in the world likely have strong ideas/plans for us were the call ever to come. It's something he could do remotely until after the world cup, quite easily.

You'd think we're about to hire Idi Amin based on the reservations people have on his effect on stability and general behaviour.

He'd be an great, realistic appointment for a couple of years. That's all we need at this stage.
Agree with this. Frankly we need someone to come in and stamp their style and authority on this club. Someone completely opposite to Moyes which is exactly what van Gaal is. Finally we can look forward to some progressive football and no more torture.

Fixed, if he had his way. Moyes's quotes about 'the rebuilding process', 'everyone knows this will take time', 'its a long journey', 'look forward to many battles with Guardiola' etc were absolutely terrifying.

I reckon he'll bring Meulensteen back.

Good call. Van Gaal always tended to keep one old coach in his setup whenever he joins a new team. We're not exactly blessed with talented coaches thanks to Moyes so its possible he might tempt an old United coach back into the setup.

Does Van Gaal have a favoured assistant manager?

I don't know but I hope that the club appoint Giggsy as LVG' assistant. It is something that many clubs do, and IMO we should do it too.

Maulensteen is a good shout, and I can see LVG getting him. I think that his staff will be bigger than Moyes' staff (which had like 4 coaches)

It used to be Jonker but, he is with Arsenal now.

He won't give two fecks about what Rooney or the other supposed big shots at OT think...

If Rooney is acting up again or delivers more pub player performances as his bottom level under van Gaal he is finished. Just ask these people:

Müller told it differently when he was asked for it lately in a TV show. He did not say that it happened - he just said it could have happened but if it happened then... It was in a time when they still lost matches and did a lot mistakes on the beginning of the first season (van Gaal totally changed team and system!) - and van Gaal showed the mistakes in his after-match-talks in front of everybody. And he told that he did not show this scenes to ridicule the players just to show everybody what they have to make better. And he did not show his balls to show his superiority or something but to show everybody that he can make himself look stupid, too.

Luca Toni did not speak a lot German then - I doubt he spoke more than 10 words...

For van Gaal discipline is important - and today's Ribery would not have problems with him but the Ribery of 2009/10 had.

Van Gaal did not care about young or old - he just does not care if a player is a star player. It was not only the young ones but it was Ivica Olic, too, who he used a lot in his time at Bayern.

Van Gaal had problems with players that could not take discipline and maybe with some that did not match his system. But he e.g. appreciated when a player took an effort in trying to change - like e.g. Mario Gomez did who after he was not used very often in his first year at Bayern adapted - and in the second year van Gaal adapted the system more to include him as permanent starter.

And he might have had some professionals that did not get around with him (but which longtime manager does not) - but a long list of players that did and really liked him and learned a lot with him.

He made Mourinho from an interpreter to his assistant coach. And I remember an interview with Guardiola in March or April 2010 - short before they got swapped out of he CL - in which he told that he closely watches what van Gaal does with Bayern and the players. That is probably when he started to got attracted of the club and the players.

Thanks about this. Only cofirmed my opinion on Van Gaal.

What do you think about how it will be the relation between him and Rooney? Will he only bench Rooney, or will he sell him or probably kill him?

Can anyone give a few reasons as to why things might have started going wrong for him towards the end at Barca and Bayern?

He has poor relationships with the stars, and he's not great in the transfer market imo.

But his personality has to be the number reason why he struggled in most of his jobs.

Doesn't sound good at all then. I kind of hope (if Moyes gets sacked) that we don't get him.

Rooney seems to be a player most managers would love to have. Say what you want about him, but he's still a top class player and always gives his all on the pitch and can play in a number of positions. He'd obviously like RVP more but I think Van Gaal would get them to work. Nothing more then a gut feeling though.

fecking hell, some of these stories about van Gaal make Sir Alex seem like a pussy cat. I'm not really sure what we need is a strict authoritarian who will rustle lots of feathers and cause some players to become unhappy. Klopp has the personality as well as the managerial ability in my opinion. What would the long term plan be if we were to bring in van Gaal?

And he also eventually falls out with the board and press as well.
Yup. The English journalists would love him (he's gonna swear in every single press conference).

Me too. I hope we won't go for him. For me Klopp, Mourinho, Hiddink are all way ahead of him.

van Gaal would not be a long term plan, I don't think. But I'm assuming the strategy would be to allow van Gaal three years or so to rebuild from Moyes' mess, 'til Klopp or Pep become available.

I think, possibly in relation to the Spurs job, there was talk about van Gaal bringing De Boer in as his assistant and then FDB taking over after a few years. No idea if this is realistic or remotely desirable, however.

Where will ha play though? I don't think that LVG ever played 442. Rooney isn't good enough to play as a wing forward (he doesn't have the dynamics for that) and I think that Van Gaal will prefer someone with better technique as an attacking midfielder. Of course, there is the possibility of Van Gaal adapting and finding a place for him, but I just can't see it.
