United linked with van Gaal in the meeja

Good. That disco twat has been leaking line ups. And Ladyman has been blaming SAF.

Hope LVG slaps them again.

Louis van Gaal has been touted as the perfect Manchester United manager should David Moyes be sacked.

A 3-0 derby defeat to neighbours Manchester City at a stunned Old Trafford on Tuesday was the latest blow in a season of turmoil for the champions.

Despite Sir Bobby Charlton’s insistence Moyes will not be replaced, his future is under intense scrutiny as his reign stumbles from one calamity to another.

Van Gaal has an impeccable track record and has suggested he will either work in England or retire after leading Holland at the World Cup this year.

Former Holland midfielder Ronald de Boer, who played for Van Gaal at Ajax and Barcelona, is confident his old boss would enjoy enormous success in the Premier League.

‘He is one of the best coaches in the world and can really prepare a team,’ said De Boer, who is now an Ajax youth coach.

‘He can find weakness in any opponent and present them with solid opposition as he analyses the game really well.

‘He has so much quality he would be successful in England, especially if he is given time to set out his team.’

Van Gaal has also been linked with Tottenham and De Boer believes the 62-year-old’s knack for unearthing young talent would be invaluable at White Hart Lane or Old Trafford.

‘At Bayern he won the Bundesliga and got to the final of the Champions League with young players like Thomas Muller, Holger Badstuber and others,’ he said at the Laureus world sports awards in Kuala Lumpur.

‘No one had heard of them but now everyone is talking about them. He has an eye for talent.’

His working method is in line with the United philosophy. Likes to look at the youth system of the club, doesn't care about age, loves to use fast wingers and width, likes attacking football.

So basically Van Gaal is an utter nut job? Im not so keen on him as I was initially.
He whipped his bollocks out in front of his players to prove he had the balls. The guy is bonkers.

I know people like a bit of crazy but this guy seems like a complete loon.

I think we need that. I agree with @Pogue Mahone that we need someone who isn't going to be afraid of anyone or anything.

One of the early alarm bells about Moyes was what he said about Van Persie after we lost at home to Newcastle, that he couldn't take him off cos of what the media would say. His handling of Rooney recently and his desperate attempts to fit all the stars in made it clear he wasn't big enough to manage the big names.

Van Gaal won't give a toss about names and reputations. He'll have a way he wants to play and the players will have to fit in with that. If they don't like it, well we've all heard the stories about him dropping his pants...

David Beckham, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney. Fergie fell out with big time players all the time because he wouldn't accept a challenge to his authority. It does not worry me that Van Gaal fell out with players like Stoichkov, Rivaldo and Ribery, they are exactly the types of players that Fergie fell out with.

Van Gaal teams play great football. I am happy to see that for a change with a minimum expectation of a top four spot next season.

Being utter bonkers would probably not work out too well in England with regards dealing with the media and players.

Mourinho is totally off his rocker (pokes people in the eye etc.) and he seems to have done ok.

It really is looking like he is the most suitable and available man out there currently. I think a very strong personality is what is needed right now, not to mention some decent football. The fact that he "manhandles" journos is just an added bonus :)

Mourinho is totally off his rocker (pokes people in the eye etc.) and he seems to have done ok.

However unless people are exaggerating things, Van Gaal seems to be on another level to Jose.

They'll love him because he's news; then they'll hate him if he oversteps the line because they, in contrast, are so moral. And yes, I am being sarcastic. [/Homer]

His old Barcelona side was pretty mental to watch, always got the impression he cared feck all for defending in general, all out attack especially at the Camp Nou, I remember Ron Atkinson remarking "this guy (LvG) believes defence (phoenetically sounded) is something you put around your garden" sums him up,
Really believe he'll repair our dire attacking play if nothing else.

Van Gaal might work out but...

1) He is not the safe pair of hands/short term caretaker type some people are looking for. If you go for Van Gaal you damn well get Van Gaal, with all that implies.

2) If it goes wrong it will go very wrong.

In some ways he's like the direct opposite of Moyes: top level experience and tendency to play attractive football combined with a big ego and authoritarian streak beyond even SAF's. That might help him in some respects (the job certainly won't be too big for him and he'll take no bullshit from the players) but it could also feck us up worse. He's also had a few high profile failures in his career too, he's in no way a sure bet.

A better appointment than Moyes? No question. A worthy successor to SAF? I'm not convinced. A risky appointment with the potential for disaster? Hell yes.

After the players disgraceful lack of effort under Moyes I'm all for getting in someone with a big ego who isn't afraid of ruffling a few feathers. Especially if that person has the cv to back it up. Van Gaal's abrasive personality could actually be a positive.

My point exactly during the discussion earlier. Damn you Pogue, stole my alerts. :(

Big positive about Van Gaal is, if we´re still shit come Christmas, he will get a lot more patience than Moyes from fans as he has proven he knows what he´s doing at a big club, and will give a lot of people belief that if he actually is given time he will turn us around. He can back up his methods with his CV.

I can imagine what Chelsea - United games would be. From the press conferences and the mind games, to the match and post match interviews. Two crazy special ones at each other

I think he'll be so mental that the press will love him possibly. Or he'll be so mental he just doesn't care less what they write about him.

Van Gaal is on another level. And even putting that to the side Mourinho generally has fantastic relationships with his players, at Porto, Inter and Chelsea they adored him. Poking another coach in the eye is a different type of crazy to what Van Gaal does.

Van Gaal can just be a very difficult person to work with. It's different to Mourinho.

I wouldn't mind him here though, but I think we should be clear about what we're getting. His history is not the same as Fergie's or Jose's so we should be straight up about that.

mourinho learned his shit and got the confidence and brazen attitude from van Gaal. There is an article floating around with van Gaal saying how shy the portuguese bugger used to be. Mourinho also hugely admires him and says he gave him the confidence to become a manager.

Picked a few things up attitude-wise from his mentor.

(1) His win ratio is a staggering 62 per cent through the course of 22 years in the dugout. It all makes for impressive reading, especially when the respective locations of his triumphs are considered; Ajax, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich.

(2) He is well known for his eccentric behvaiour as well as idiosyncratic tendencies when it comes to man management.Take one tale relayed to the press by Bayern’s Luca Toni where Van Gaal dropped his trousers in front of the squad to demonstrate he had the ‘balls’ to axe any player from the starting line-up.

(3) He physically assaulted a 14 year old Pique whilst manager at Barcelona

"Piqué's grandfather was even a club director, and one day he invited Barcelona's coach Louis van Gaal to lunch. "This," he said, introducing the young Gerard, "is my grandson – a centre-back for Barcelona's youth team." Van Gaal looked at Piqué and, without warning, pushed him over. Towering above the 14- year-old, he barked: "You're too weak to be a Barcelona defender.""

(4) He has had a long running feud with Johan Cruyff since 1989

"Van Gaal, along with the Koeman brothers, had taken up an invitation to have dinner at the Cruyff family home. "The phone rang, it was for me," recounted Van Gaal in his 2009 autobiography. "It was my family, ringing to tell me my sister had died. I rushed out immediately. Later I heard that Johann was angry I didn't thank him for the meal.""

(5) Although the 1995 Champions League final against Milan was all about Patrick Kluivert's late winner for Ajax, Van Gaal got his fair share of attention as well for one particular incident during the game. When the referee refused to award the Dutch side a free kick when Marcel Desailly nearly decapitated Jari Litmanen, Van Gaal was apoplectic and imitated Desailly's action with an impressive karate kick.

(7) Some vintage quotes by Van Gaal

"I have achieved more with Ajax in six years than Barcelona has in one hundred years." - In 1997 after becoming coach of Barcelona

"Louis van Gaal has nothing more to learn" - Said about himself in 2001

"Guardiola follows the Van Gaal Philosophy. So I’m not surprised Bayern have hired Guardiola. Bayern always hire the best managers" - Van Gaal 2013

"If you want to, go ahead." - After a reporter asked Van Gaal whether he wanted to congratulate his former friend Ronald Koeman with winning the Eredivisie with PSV

(8) Some vintage quotes about Van Gaal

"Van Gaal really has Alzheimer's if he writes stuff like that. You wonder whether he has one or two screws loose." - Johan Cruyff

"Van Gaal is the Hitler of the Brazilian players, is arrogant, proud and has a problem. He has no idea of football. His type is sick, he's crazy." - Giovanni

"His management style reminds me of that of Felix Magath,"
-Karl-Heinz Rummenigge ( This is not a compliment)

(9) Journalists don't know jack. This has always been Van Gaal's default position on handling the media. Throughout the course of his career Van Gaal has done nothing to disguise his feelings of sheer contempt towards journalists, certain questions were dismissed as "parrot music," numerous TV journalists who encountered him had trouble keeping it together in the face of a manager who treated every query as a personal insult.

A typical Van Gaal press conference

Blimey in German.

 I´m sold. Sign him up

Would not surprise me to see him pronounce himself a better manager than Alex Ferguson during his first press conference for United.

It would make sense on a few levels. Clearly the best 3-4 managers in the world are currently tied up with their own projects (Mourinho, Guardiola, Klopp etc) and are unlikely to leave this Summer. Van Gaal presumably would come in and try to implement a different play style and hopefully do so whilst having us finishing in the Champions League spots at a minimum.

If he dented a few egos in the process I don't think that would be a bad thing, particularly after watching a few big name players strut around like they were player-manager this season. Likewise his age means that he is probably looking for a final medium term project, by which time hopefully the aforementioned great managers could be available.

I personally have no real opinion of him as a manager, he seems to have done well in short periods of time, but also seems to be quite divisive. However not every manager needs to be 40-50 and plan to be here for a couple of decades. I do however share the concerns about him not finishing the World Cup until July and then having the same slow start and plethora of excuses our last manager used. Although I'd like to think that our top 2-3 targets have already been earmarked, budgeted for and sounded out, which the incoming manager able to bring 1-2 additions in afterwards.

He'd surely get my backing. I think our players need a good kick up in their arse and there's no one better out there to do that.

Let's be honest, LVG would be hilarious. Instead of Moyes yapping on about trying and how chuffed he is to be United manager, LVG would probably teabag Rooney in front of the entire first team squad to make a statement of intent, while insisting a statue of him is built next to the SAF one.

It'd be a fecking rollercoaster if we appointed Van Gaal... he'd be the complete opposite of Moyes.

Yeah, that's a big negative for me too. We could do without another manager rocking up in July and trying to assess the squad afresh.

Though, I'm fairly confident that Van Gaal would be able to manage this squad a lot better than Moyes.

He'll take one look at the squad and know that there's a gaping hole in midfield which he will want to plug. He'll be told that a lot of background work in securing certain players is done and he'll be asked if they're good options for the system he intends to play and he'll make a call.

Best of all, he'll promote a couple of our youth players if he thinks they cut it. Muller, Badstuber and Alaba... all his promotions.

And also probably convert some players into new positions as well. It was a stroke of genius to convert Schweinsteiger from a winger into one of the best midfielders in the game today.
