United linked with van Gaal in the meeja

That attitude is great. Perfectionist. People in England always say the result is what matters in the end (Mourinho is a manager with that mentality), but managers like Pep and Van Gaal take pride in the way they play. When they go to sleep at night, they don't necessarily dream manage a team to win, but the way you win. Winning comes after. That is why you see them get edgy after they win, and you cannot understand why.
That sounds just like SAF at Aberdeen, they won but he was stilled unhappy. He wants to win with style, can't wait.

He asked if Bayern thought they could win this game in first gear.. Lvg went nuts..
Told him they played a great game but couldnt score.. "You thought we played well vs Fiorentina that game wasnt half as good.. We scored couple of goals but didnt play half as good! But if the results are right nobody gives a shit.."

I am looking forward to this..

Reminiscent of when Aberdeen won the cup final under fergie and he goes nuts in the post match interview about how badly they played.

Always on my view that post-Fergie, United need a manager with balls and winning mentality just to 'steady the ship', even in short-term basis. I think that's why most in here preferred Mourinho, and I agreed.

Then during this period of transition where United are still winning, whether with good style or not, United have time to thoroughly looking for long-term solution of new manager. It's basically bidding time to find the real 'Chosen One' (Klopp?). That's if United don't want to go with trial and error approach on sacking and hiring.

In short, judging by his character, experience, and age, this appointment of LvG is really what United need. Although no ball has been kicked on the field yet, I'm really optimistic with United future. It's a good job, for whoever in charge on finding new manager this time.

I think he more than makes up for being physically a bit slower with his intelligence and passing. Does Van Gaal need a fast no.10s? He wants fast wingplay, I know this. This year's Dutch NT doesn't have a fast no.10. And if he likes to play possession based football, I dont think he necessarily wants a fast no.10.
The Matt Law article further up says he like intelligence, so Mata has loads of that.

They say he falls out with players, but if you are stupid enough to act like you know better than him you deserve everything you get. If they follow his instructions he will look after you. They say he cares about the players personal life as well, that he is interested in their families etc, that might get most onside funny enough.

I really hope he can get some of the English lads (specifically talking about Zaha, Welbeck) to realize their full potential, it would be brilliant.

It was the opposite here though. It was mostly a dire possession game without creating a lot clear chances and therefore we drew away against 17th placed Nürnberg (Gündogan scored the equaliser by the way, could have scored another one shortly after). Only late in the game we built up more pressure and created more, but failed to win in the end. It was funny how he bullied that stupid journalist, but in the end he was just defending his tactics. That's okay as long as he's overall successful, not as entertaining when you watch your team play shit football for months though.

Yup. I think our current players are a bunch of good professionals, who always thrives for the best. With the last manager, I can fully understand the dissatisfaction of few players. But seems like LvG character mimics SAF, and old enough to be the father figure to most of the players (which they were used to have from the manager), and also well-respected in footballing world. I really think that our players will take LvG with wide opened arms, and willing to work for him.

If reports about Zaha's attitude are true, he'l be shitting his pants at the thought of Van Gaal

Welbeck would really benefit from someone like him. Ditto with Clev.

FWIW my thought's on LVG have changed. I've mellowed on him the more I've read about him. He commands respect and gets his stuff going immediately, anyone not pulling in the right direction is out. I still hate his face.

My views on Klopp haven't changed. Clearly a talented manager, doesn't want to leave Dortmund for the foreseeable future, has never managed a properly big club. Still hate his face, mind.

Simeone hasn't changed either. He looks closer to winning big things with them, which is an incredible achievement, but he's done it with a totally different group of players. He's never managed a massive club and he's never really had to handle big players. I've also read that his management style would be very abrasive at a top club. I don't know why but the Spanish journo didn't think he'd be cut out for United.

Happy with that, pal?

So what you are saying is Simeone is the closest example to achieving the same as Alex Ferguson pre Manchester United (European success with minnows Aberdeen, never managed massive club or handled big players) yet is not for you for those reasons....

If I was van Gaal I would play the following.

De Gea
Rafael Jones Smalling unknown
Carrick Fellaini
Mata
Januzaj (Rooney/RVP) Kagawa

No headache if you consider Rooney as a striker and only play 1 of him or RVP.

I think the only players running the risk of being sold are Young, Cleverley, Nani and Anderson. Valencia is still useful as Rafael's backup.

You can't rotate too much when you're playing once a week or else you will end up with a squad lacking match sharpness.

That's what I hoped Moyes would go with in terms of Rooney/RVP and just swap them for each game or whatever. Mata is a natural No.10 as is Kagawa but he can drift in from the left and interchange with Mata, which they have struck up a good partnership in the last month or so. Januzaj is still learning but my god will we see him come on a lot next season. I can't wait. LVG is the right man for the job and I've no doubt he'll get the best of the players. He has that respect and authoritative nature about him. Moyes tried & failed but we'll learn from it and so will Moyes.

2 year contract is the best way forward, considering whats gone on recently and the fact that LVG was considering retiring if he didn't get a job in the EPL so 2 years is ideal and, at the end of it, if he still feels he can continue and we're winning trophies again, he'll be given a 12 month rolling contract. Be interesting to see where Giggs fits in all his plans.

apologies if its been posted elsewhere.

It's a load of absolute shite and gets the usual dig in at Fergie. Typical of the rag, really.

The sale of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 was the death knell of the manager’s and the club’s footballing philosophy, the true Manchester United way under Fergie, of playing lightning counter-attacking football with pace, tempo and power. From that moment the club became about winning whichever way it could and the football became increasingly pedestrian and disordered. The last title win was achieved, remarkably, without the team having any discernible tactical approach other than get the ball to RVP any way you can

So we won by being pedestrian, disordered and with no clue other than 'pass to RVP'? No tactical approach?

Interesting to note.

Don't know mate, think it nails it tbh

I just hope our first non-British manager doesn't compromise our commitment to British players. Other than Rooney no one is guaranteed their place. I hope Jones, Evans, Smalling, Welbeck continue to get game time and maybe even Cleverley rediscover his form. The likes of the Keanes, Lingard, Lawrence, Powell and Wilson could get the odd game. Obviously Giggs will stop playing and Fletcher is unlikely to play a huge amount given the investment planned in that position. Shaw would be a nice addition in that respect,

Oh dear

Oh and regarding the other post, noway is Martinez taking Fellaini back, Fellaini would do well at Newcastle, West Ham or Stoke, though.
