United linked with van Gaal in the meeja

Surely Nicky Butt must stay on as he knows the youth players pretty well and Scholes should be given a role on the off chance advancements in cloning technology allow us to grow another one.

It depends what sort of involvement in future United Van Gaal has. There's no point in having a youth coach who teaches a different style of football to the first team, it makes the jump even more difficult.

If it is indeed 2 years, it would seem like a way to avoid the pitfalls of the 6 year farce given the Moyes.

Fergie was only ever on a one year deal from 2005, I suspect van Gaal's will be kept rolling after the initial two year period.

2 years? We're just grooming Giggs really aren't we..
I imagine it's just mainly his age and tendency to not last too long in his jobs rather than a set plan to get rid in favour of Giggs in 2 years time. I do fear about this Giggs succession plan though.

Woodward and the board think proven, big name European coaches are the way to go this time round, why they'd go for the complete opposite in 2 years time I've no idea. They couldn't be that naive to appoint a 2nd under-qualified manager in the space of 3 years, surely?

Is that really what we're paying managers, didn't we offer AncelottI 18m?!
No we didn't, where did you hear that? Moyes was on 6m Euros per year, Ancelotti earns 7.5m at Real Madrid. Our supposed offer to LvG is excellent. It puts him in the top 10 of the best paid football managers, it's respectful and it shows how much we want him as we offer him a salary he can't find anywhere else, right now. Here's a list with the highest paid managers for the season (the original source was FranceFootball magazine, but i couldn't find it on my PC).

Am I the only one a little cautious on the possibility of Giggs as his #2? I'd prefer he brought someone with him that he works well with and trusts, and knows his philosophy. I'm sure Giggs can learn it but I'd rather see him go out and learn his trade elsewhere.

Hmm Guardiola's contract also expires in two years. I wouldn't rule that out from happening, we've shown interest in him already previously even though many don't like tiki-taka.

He is signing on for 2 years I don't think we will be giving him free range to do what he wants with all age groups. No chance of him coming in and kicking the likes of Warren Joyce and Paul McGuinness out. So if Warren wants Nicky Butt as his assistant I don't see Van Gaal having much to do with the decision.

Looks like a second summer of tears for Jose Mario Dos Santos Mourinho Felix.
Oh, baby.
Baby hit me one more time.

Ah right thanks for the info. Is that euros?

So Van Gaal will become the fourth highest paid manager assuming reports are correct, seems reasonable.

Most are saying could. BUT, England could win the world cup.
These papers jump to conclusions. They should get red cards for telling lies and not be able to print for 3 days.

Annoucement within the next 4 hours. #ITK

I had to look up what ITK means, which kind of defeats the purpose of an abbreviation. But at least I'm now in the know.

He's definitely going to become a sec icon. I imagine him coming out with his own range of underwear to rival Beckham

People call this a short-term appointment. But I don't get it. He's only 62-63 he could stay in charge until he's 70 if he's physically up to it. I still think Ryan Giggs needs to leave and go build himself a managerial career, then take over if he proves himself. Being LvG number 2 will give him some experience, but nothing beats being the main man and learning while doing, etc.

People are only calling it a short term appointment in relation to Ferguson's reign. In reality, 2 to 5 seasons is normal for any manager at any club.

We need to dismiss this idea of signing someone 'long term'. Time is earned, not given because we want things to work. If Van Gaal is a hit, then of course, he deserves more time. If after 2 seasons we're not reaching Champions league places then he should be shown the door. The same stands for any manager coming in after him.

What we can't have is another Moyes situation where we're handing the club over to someone under qualified because we want them to be the manager for the next 20 years.

I think it would be good for Giggs to ply his trade in management elsewhere, but the benefit of being under Van Gaal's tutorship could prove to be essential to Giggs becoming an even better potential coach. Pep benefitted from learning a few things from Van Gaal, tactically, and I'm sure Giggs would, also. There are positives that Giggs would have picked up from Sir Alex in terms of man-management, but there's tactical approach and nuances that he would pick up from LVG, also.

At this point, I don't think Giggs should go straight into management as I believe the next couple of years with LVG are what would give him what he needs to have a greater career. Giggs' main problem is that he only knows the Sir Alex way.

Excellent points.

I agree with you - Van Gaal doesn't look like he's slipping into his dotage anytime soon. We all know that fantastic players don't always make fantastic managers, but Giggs has a great opportunity now to learn from someone who's done it all. I hope it works out for him (and the club), but that remains to be seen.

Ya'll need to take a break from this thread... when it breaks you'll know about it, trust me.

or maybe not.

I find it very hard to believe Woodward didn't give Bryan Swanson a world exclusive piece of information like that.

Something is not right.

Funny that when it first pretty likely it was van Gaal, it was a split camp on the camp, but now, as it's dragging longer and longer everyone is turning and even being desperate for this to be confirmed as if it is a 'muppet signing'.
