United move appeals to Mourinho

Jose Mourinho would jump at the chance of managing Manchester United should the Red Devils decide he is the man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson.

At 67, Ferguson knows he cannot continue indefinitely, even though he is presently fit and healthy and has no intention of giving up a job he has held for almost 23 years.

United chief executive David Gill knows finding a suitable alternative will be the single most difficult task he will face given the incredible success Ferguson has enjoyed with the Red Devils.

Mourinho's name has been mentioned fairly frequently since his exit from Chelsea.

The Portuguese coach certainly has the charisma required to take on one of football's biggest jobs and is unlikely to be overwhelmed by the task of replacing the most successful British manager of all time.

And, while he insists he remains totally focused on trying to end Inter Milan's 54-year European Cup drought, he admitted the lure of returning to England with the current Premier League champions would probably be irresistible.

"I would consider going to Manchester United but United have to consider if they want me to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson," he told the Daily Mirror. "If they do, then of course.

"I like England, where the fans are very passionate and make the game a beautiful occasion with such an incredible atmosphere."

Ironically, Mourinho's statement comes just after John Terry committed his future to the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Had Mourinho still been with Chelsea, it is unlikely Terry would have needed assurances from Roman Abramovich about the future direction of the London outfit before he finally said no to Manchester City.

And, aside from backroom unrest, it has not escaped Mourinho's notice that since his controversial exit two years ago, Chelsea are now onto their fourth manager and have failed to recapture the title, while he - having guided Chelsea to back-to-back championships - has now won Serie A as well with Inter.

"I had many conversations before Chelsea and I decided on a divorce," he said. "It was difficult for me because we loved each other but the relationship went in one direction and it was best for everyone.

"Since I left I became champion again but they have not been champions again. I keep on winning and they don't."

I know many disagree, but I'd love to see him taking over after Sir Alex personally.

he will be here following SAF, it's almost writ in stone, and what's more, he will wind up liverpool supporters far more than The Great Scot, which can only be delightful for us to watch.

United would be in good hands, I'd definitely take him above O'Neill and Moyes.

Wouldn't mind it if be brought Balotelli and Santon over when he comes!

Larry White is my choice. Maureen has that Cantonesque quality of opening his mouth and spouting complete shite which mesmerises the masses. There's a certain "Emperor's new clothes" about him, as with Cantona*. He makes an impact wherever he goes due to this quality, this show, but when he gets found out, the game is up and he has to move on, ala Chelsea.

We need a manager who is a natural born leader, who will take the throne and keep it, who will give long term stability to the club. That for me is Larry White, a leader of men if ever there was one, and a wise one at that.

*Cantona was never found out, as he always knows when to leave.

for those who say they dont want him, who do you want?in my opinion, he is the only man capable of replacing Fergie.

Moyes. I have good feeling about him. Everton's status as the fifth best team in England cannot be underestimated.

Yes, Moyes is without doubt a good manager. But can the next manager of Manchester United be a man who's never won anything?

I remember in April 2006, a press man asked him if he was worried United were only 7 points adrift of Chelsea. Jose said " I am more worried about the Loch Ness monster"

Hated the guy, but admired his sense of humor.

Yes, the only option at the moment.

The fact he winds up Scousers is an added bonus.

No offence, but you're talking absolute bollocks.

Mourinho is the only manager that SAF has never actually beaten to the title over the course of a full season.

Chelsea haven't been the same since he left.

Besides, what has Blanc achieved/displayed that makes him a good bet, if you think Mourinho isn't up to it?

errr, 06/07?

He's the only option really, may not be the great success here that he was at porto or chelsea but he'll guarantee CL football and given the debt thats exactly what we need.

Mourinho would be better off at City, he's used to waving a bit fat cheque book around.

I bet he wouldn't be so ''special'' if he was managing Burnley or Stoke.

Clearly the big fat cheque book at Porto was the reason he won the CL.

his Uefa Cup and CL success with Porto would be proof that he can put together a team without simply splashing the cash.

Am I the only one with concerns over the brand of football Mourinho favours?

his teams play negative and boring football

no thanks

no - i have concerns over it too. However, Chelsea did play some great stuff under him in his first season there, with Duff and Robben doing massive damage down the flanks.

If he could go back to that at United I would be happy enough.

The main reason I would be behind Mourinho coming to United would be the fact his style of management (as opposed to play) is very like Ferguson imo. He likes to have control over the first team fully, and have big input into the way the reserves, academy and scouting structures are ran. In terms of how the club is ran and managed, I think Mourinho would be a good replacement for Ferguson.

I like the style of play of Blanc, but i don't know what his style of management is like.

In the time before and after that one season you mention is there anything to suggest that Mourinho would adopt an attacking style of play?

Also in terms of player development, can you list any players that has come through the ranks under Mourinho at any club, and not been bought in?

Santon

Granted he was picked up from another club's academy (it seems as a 14yr old), but he's been given his opportunity by Mourinho, playing 16 times for them last season.

I could definitely see Mourinho at United, and have the same things I like and dislike about it as most.

But another thing I don't like is based on his ego, which was mentioned earlier, but for me, he is such an egomaniac, he'll leave us, if we want a manager to have long-term success with, then I don't see him as the right choice, as he'll be desperate imo to go to Madrid (not sure Barca would have him) to try and win La Liga, as he'd love nothing more than to win the league in England, Italy and Spain. And then of course, he'll at some point want the Portugal job.

So, if we wanted someone who could give us a longer service, I don;t see it as Mourinho, that's not to say he won't be the next United manager, as he certainly has the ability and conviction in his ability to follow Ferguson

The guy replacing SAF will be one of the most difficult jobs in business. No matter how many cups he wins, it will practically impossible emulating the feats of his predecessor.

So you need someone with an ego big enough, to handle the criticism.

And from this point of view, no one fits the bill better than Jose.
