United open Carrick talks

Bloody hell. What's the point?

We are losing Rooney(hopefully), Ibra, Young and possibly Smalling or Jones this Summer. Carrick is the perfect guy to keep around as an experienced squad member and he's a true professional too.

His downturn in form had coincided with him being played in a static midfield with the likes of Rooney or Fellaini and being asked to do the dirty work. I am confident that if we put him with runners like Pogba and Herrera again he would look just as good as he did earlier on in the season.

Experience is overrated and pointless when the players legs have gone as Carrick's have, if Jose intends to use 4-3-3 then I guess he could fit in for a few cup games, but if he plans to use a 2 man midfield he's a liability.

I trust Jose to pick and choose the right games to play him. Carrick's legs haven't gone, played in the right system or against suitable opposition and he has something to offer. This will also afford us time to find and bed in his successor.

He's good enough as squad player though. Even Jose knows he's not a starter.

Realistically, 1 of Carrick/Fellaini need to go though to make space for better players. I think Fellaini is in better shape to Carrick, but he still holds some value so he might be sold.

Makes sense signing him for another season as a squad player. Would not expect more than 20 games out of him next season as we will sign a midfielder in the summer.

More walking football next season, he's been great but it's time to move on, and he's been poor this season.

He's played too much this season, mostly because of injuries/suspensions. If managed properly he's a great, reliable option to have in the squad and still has a lot to offer. For instance, I would much rather see him come on to help close out a game than Fellaini.

Excellent! Still has plenty to offer and I'm glad José recognises this.

Hopefully we are, but keeping Carrick as backup means less chances for young players.
What young players do we have that plays as DM? If we sign a DM then he's very likely going to be first choice from the start or competing with Herrera while Carrick is either on the bench or the stands.

I like Carrick, but I'm not a fan of another extension.

No, that's not the reason at all. We haven't had that many suspensions or injuries in MF. Pogba out for 3 weeks with his hammy and a couple of red cards by Herrera and Fellaini were the only absences through the season. That's feck all actually.

The reason he's played quite a bit is because Mourinho didn't want to play Bastian and Morgan and eventually sold them. And because he didn't trust Tofu Mensah either. Those decisions were his to make. I'm not saying that he made them wrongly, but the consequence of his choices was that he ended up relying on Carrick a lot.

Maybe he didn't anticipate his decline in the 2nd half of the season. Though that would be surprising as Mourinho is not stupid, it must have crossed his mind that a 35yo could very well have a sharp drop as the fixtures pile up in the 2nd half.

Experience doesn't help you move around the pitch when your fecked and can't get up and down the pitch. He needs to go sadly. Yeah he can come on and spray some balls when he has time, so could scholes and Beckham, doesn't mean we should be signing them.

His times up sadly.

Didn't realise he was on a zimmer frame now? He's never been quick and still gets around the pitch. No idea what you're on about his legs have gone? He still has 2 of them and he can still just just as slowly as he always has. He Isn't the player he once was, but United should give him a role within the squad. His guidance and experience will be essential next season.

I think it's a good move to keep him for another year. We obviously would get in another midfielder who would start ahead of him but having Carrick around in the dressing room can be influential with getting that winning mentality back into the squad.

Keep Carrick and lose Fellaini? I'm happy with that, just as long as we sign a defensive mid for first choice and manage Carrick's games efficiently. There's still a good player in there if we know where to find him.

If we're going to play 4-3-3 surely we need to keep both? How many midfielders do you expect we'll sign this summer?

Andreas Pereira, fellaini and Carrick would be okay back ups I guess. I can understand why he has to stay we are probably bringing in 4-5 players across all positions (midfield, attack, defense) if we bring anymore than that it's overkill. A goal scoring wide player, striker , midfielder and a cb

I think he still has some use.

Our best patch of form this year was with him playing in a 433.

In an ideal world 3, but I highly doubt we will. I'd like to see 2 more defensive minded ones and a box to box, but I think two is more realistic. Just the one and we're in trouble though.

Well we saw earlier in the season that Carrick was hardly used and then with the calamity partnership that Felllaini and Pogba formed as a two man mid Jose was forced to play him more to try and get the best out of Pogba, as at the time it seemed we needed a solid base behind him as he was still settling in to a new team and system.

I don't think it was ever Jose's intention to play him as much as he has.

I would have thought he's sat down with Carrick and explained that next season he'll be used sparingly, either as a sub to see a game out or during cup games with a view to transitioning to a coaching role and that he's experience and mentality in the locker room will be his main contribution.

As said in a previous post. We can squeeze another year from him if we stop seeing him as a DM. He'll be a half decent deep lying playmaker if given little/no defensive duties

With the injury's we get every season, we need 33 players at least. Selling or letting players leave isn't much of an option. Except Rooney

I find it difficult to be excited about this. It's not like we're setting the world alight or he has contributed a significant amount this season. We need to freshen things up, stop relying on Carrick and Fellaini and get someone new in the middle with Herrera and Pogba.

I think he has been overplayed, we've relied on him a lot especially mid season, I don't blame him for being slower towards the end of the season because of that. Bring in a new DM, use Carrick as a 2nd/3rd option, he's a lot more reliable than a lot of second string players especially in our own squad. He will also probably be a lot cheaper wage wise than most since he'll be aware of his playtime reduction. He should stay and retire with us whilst playing a bit part role like giggsy did.

I definitely trust Jose and I am a fan of Carrick, but I think it has been more than obvious that his time here is at an end. He can barely run. One of our most important upgrades next season will come in this position in my opinion.

You can see this going again from, it is a smart deal because we can use him as a sub in the odd game but he definatley should not be first pick and we definatley need to buy a replacement to a situation where either we will not get a replacement or his replacement will either not get a fair chance or will disappoint and Carrick will be playing much more than he should.

Cut the fecking umbilical cord is what we should do. He is not good enough anymore, he does not have the legs anymore, he slows down our game because of this and he simply should be replaced. Just do that and stop giving him a contract extension year after year. He has not been good anymore since 2013, REPLACE HIM !

Well said.

I love him to bits but get rid. It will damage us not to replace him sooner.

It's fine if we are bringing in a student to him.

Complaining is pointless. There seem to be an unwritten code of honour were legends at United overstay for at least 1 year. Rooney, Gaz, Scholes, Giggs and now Carrick.

Yes we all know this but this year was supposed to be that year for Carrick.

Overstaying for 2 years is unacceptable.

Hmm i hate to moan because Carrick as been great over the years but the time to move on is now. His contract is up and he's got a testimonial this summer, this on the back of a pretty unimpressive season I think we should let him go.

Nah he started well so he's entitled for at least another 5-6 months. Lets say a year and we put that to sleep

Don't worry after the year is over Carrick would probably say in an interview that he felt guilty of taking the money as he knew that he was finished. Don't take him wrong He would still keep it that money but the fans would love him for saying that
