Actually, I humbly retract my last post.
Why can't politicians start encouraging the use of public transportation (Invest more in security if that's the issue) instead of subventioning gasoline? I mean this is Chicago, not some random city in Montana. Or is there something more to the car in the US that I am missing?
This planet is doomed.
Public transport in America absolutely sucks and thus having cars in almost every city is a necessity.
Crazy idea, invest in the public transport?
Also, many of our large cities are massive in terms of size which makes useful public transport more difficult outside the city "center". Of course this is likely a chicken/egg scenario where the massive use of cars means people can live further away, and because people lie further away then need cars.
Shape of most American cities isn’t conducive to public transport, too many people living on the outskirts / suburbs.

Isn't it mostly a zoning issue where your can only build low density housing in a lot of areas? And it can't be mixed with business properties?
