No logo would be too good! But am sure there are some american companies that will pay sick money to get on our shirts....

From the Torygraph

'Manchester United are searching for a new shirt sponsor after Vodafone ended their current £36 million deal two years early.

Negotiations between Old Trafford executives and the telecommunications giant have resulted in a mutual decision to end the current £9 million-a-year contract at the end of the season.

The announcement is bound to be seen as a setback in the business plan of new owner Malcolm Glazer.

But having taken early soundings from potential replacements, commercial director Andy Anson is convinced it will actually allow the club to negotiate a better deal.

"The Manchester United shirt is the most iconic in sport," he said.

"The club feels that, in the current market there is a genuine chance to attract significant additional investment.

"Initial soundings and discussions with a number of world-class potential partners have been very encouraging and we are confident of securing a new deal in the coming months."

Although Vodafone did let an opt-out clause in the current deal pass without giving an indication they wished to end it, it is believed the company wish to restructure their sponsorship, with the focus likely to be on the Champions League.

However, it is also anticipated they will remain as platinum sponsors with United, who announced their intention to concentrate on attracting a core group of investors prior to the £790 million Glazer buyout.

Anson has already been responsible for attracting a major sponsorship deal with German car manufacturer Audi and will now step up his search for what will be only the third shirt sponsor in United's history.

Japanese electrical firm Sharp were the first company to have their name on the famous red strip, with their association lasting 18 years from 1982.

Although Anson is correct in his assertion United remain one of the most famous footballing names on the planet, their image has been tarnished by a relative lack of success in recent seasons and the possibility of an early exit from this year's Champions League will not help in his negotiations.

The biggest current shirt sponsorship deal in English football is the £50million, five-year contract Chelsea have with Samsung.

However, even that contract is eclipsed by the £16 million-a-year Real Madrid will rake in from Taiwanese mobile company BenQ Mobile in a deal that takes effect in the summer.'

WTF??? BenQ Mobile? Who the feck are they? Talk about selling the soul to make a name in the world of business.

I'm quite sure Glazer will have plenty of interested companies. Dell, Yahoo!, Google, Pepsi, Microsoft, etc. They'll find a new shirt sponsor within a few months. Someone will be willing to pay 8-12m per year.

As far as I heard, Vodafone are lining up to be sponsors and official network of the Champions League...its supposed to be a conflict and they were forced to pull out from United

FYI, they are the ones who took over Siemens Mobile if I'm not wrong.

They're computer makers. I very much doubt if Real Madrid would give a flying feck what they are as long as they stand to make lots and lots of money to buy overrated stars.

The timing is awful [been really dropeed in it] for the commercial types at the club who'll have to negotiate any new deal, our partnership with Vodafone was agreed years ago from a position of strength, now it will have to be done from one of weakness.

That's a dark cloud on the surface but it has a silver lining if the Glazers are now one step closer to leaving and flying back state side, permanently.

The Glazers just aren't goin to get the kind of income they're looking for unless they try and replicate what Arsenal did and get a sponsor for Old Trafford, but then they know that is a PR minefield and opposed by many of the fans. I still think they might look to this as their only solution, so more protests/direct action will be on the way. Hm

Although they will know that all those families and people who buy a new shirt every season will go out an replace every kit now to keep up to date, and they won't have any complaints about that.

VODAFONE END MAN UNITED DEAL
By Steve Purcell
TROUBLED Manchester United will lose their shirt sponsors, Vodafone, at the end of the season, it was announced today.

The mobile phone giant is pulling out of the £36million deal two years early - leaving the Old Trafford outfit with problems both on and off the pitch.

After last night's goal-less draw with Villarreal, United are one game away from a disastrous Champions League exit which could cost the club around £15million.

The Vodafone deal is worth £9million a year and United immediately launched a search for a new sponsor.

Andy Anson, United's commercial director, today claimed the move would allow the club to find an even better deal. He said: "The Manchester United shirt is the most iconic in sport.

"Initial soundings and discussions with a number of world-class potential partners have been very encouraging and we are confident of securing a new deal in the coming months."

Incredibly, the next sponsor will only be United's third. Japanese electrical giants Sharp were the first company to have their name emblazoned on the famous Red Devils' shirts - and they continued their sponsorship for 18 years from 1982.

Premiership champions Chelsea currently have a £50million, five-year deal with Samsung, while Real Madrid recently signed a £16million-a-year deal with Taiwanese mobile phone firm BenQ Mobile which takes effect next summer.

Can someone please record this and slap my back come January

Release the hounds!

I find it odd that no article mentions anything about the fact that it's probable Vodafone will have to settle on a final payment for renigging on the contract. I'm sure there is some verbage in the sponsorship that would Vodafone would have to pay a lump sum to trigger a release clause. With 2 years and 18m remaining on the existing deal, I bet Vodafone will be ponying up a decent sum to trigger a release.

But these articles are sensationalized to make it seem as if the world has caved in on United. Far from it. New sponsers will be lining up, ready to brand their name across the United shirt.

This guy I know, his dad went to Thailand on one of those fecked up sex tours (he said it was to visit family - yeah right), anyway, he came back from Thailand with some sweet new clothes and sandals with the distinctive 4 stripes all over it, you know: abibas.

It was fecking CLASS - they should be our new shirt sponsors.

EDIT: I should also add that they used that old sombrero looking logo, but it had two humps, instead of one. It's a natural, really.

Rumour has it that Microsoft is going to be our new sponser, with Windows XP as the main logo on the home shirts and X-Box 360 on the away shirts.

The Yahoo! founders are big footy fans, and I believe Filo is a big United supporter, so I wouldn't be shocked to see them bid. I believe it came down to Vodafone and Yahoo! last time around. Yahoo! could use the sponsorship in an attempt to make them a global brand and take back a portion of the market Google has taken from them.

Perfect sponsor.

It's amazing the power of shirt advertising!...... When Sharp first sponsored Utd., they were barely known, I for one, had never heard of them !...... As they say, "the rest is history"!

I've got BenQ LCD, quite good.

Yup, and 250m per year. We'll get our Ronaldinho.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not McDonalds! That would look fugly! And No Microsoft and their products, u want that monopoly of theirs to get any bigger? Google would look really funny but it still doesnt seem right.

How about a company like Apple, we could have ipod on our shirts and their big white Apple logo?

These rumours were around ages ago when Glazer took over. There is a clause in the contract which allows them to leave if there is a change within the club such as a take over; it was just a matter of time.

I believe Nike has a simular clause as well.
