Very true tbh. As I said with other top players when they have a bad day/spell it's usually tough passes/shots not coming off, for Rooney he looses the basics, which does seriously inhibit us as at times as he's the central player the moves go through. I dunno how he can overcome that though.

Agree. Good penalty to send the keeper the wrong way and obviously important he scored it, he also had a decent shot to the keepers right and was involved in a move or two but he did have a poor game, Rooney standards or not.
He often gets a few of his Scholes replica type Hollywood balls off but his short passing was shocking, real bad today. Also he's definitely lost some pace, when he lost the ball in attack, right wing I think then came charging back to get the ball like the old Rooney would he gave up in the end. He's only 26 so shouldn't be losing his legs yet, look at Bellamy etc. Must be a lung thing or fitness thing to do with the smoking or something. Other times his tame shots or passing are so easy for players to read in the way he shapes up. Honestly thought Fergie would take him off again.
Still, he's had a great season and been played all over the place, 2nd top scorer in the PL and did score two today whatever we say, true enough. Lots of the other players were great today, I just think Rooney wasn't one.
Tbf he was chasing Agbonlahor, who is up there with the fastest in the prem.
He did have a poor game but he still scored 2 goals, and we won 4-0 so I'm not worried. He's not really a player who excels in the little games, even though he might score in them. When the big games come more often than not he is on top of his game.
Yeah sure mate, not saying it in a he's got an issue this season kind of way. Just that he had a bad game and what his bad bits where (as well as his positives).
I was thinking the same myself today. When Rooney is playing with intensity he just isn't very good. It also seems to spread throughout the team. As our best player he really needs to be taking the bull by the horns in the run in. Instead it's being left to Scholes.

Did Sir Bobby Charlton ever take penalties on his route to 249? How many of Rooneys have been pens? Seems to have notched a fair few of em this season.
I think he's taken 12 penalties this season, though he's converted 9 - that's about a third of his goals.
It'd be interesting to know how many of Ronaldo's and Ruud's goals came from penalties. (If anyone can point me in the right direction I'll them up myself, anyone know any good sites to look for stats like this?)
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 17 penalties in his United career (all competitions).
I don't have a figure for RvN, although I do know he's scored the most penalties in CL history (11), of which 6 at Man Utd.

The great man speaks the 100% facts again. Rooneys beat game for us since the turn of the year IMO was against Chelsea away in the 3-3, you couldn't ask for a more close and competitive game that being 3-0 down in that game.
Rooney actually started very well today, scored the penalty, had one shot that look destined for a goal well blocked by one of their defenders, made room for a shot brilliantly that Given saved at his near post and it was actually when the whole teams performance dropped that he turned to utter dog shit.
Hopefully he's the difference in the derby in 2 weeks time if he's saving up a big performance

The goals he scored, along with a number of other chances he missed were laid out on a plate for him. He was a passenger who benefitted more from our play than he contributed.
All well and good that we ended up winning comfortably, but you generally can't afford to dick about at this time of the season.

I've been disappointed with Rooney in more games than I've been amazed by him this season. He's delivered the goods so it's strange to be so critical of him but messing up the basic stuff frustrates the hell out of me, especially when he's so important to our attacking play.

Very similar to his wonder season 09-10 season in that sense. He's not had the run of great performances, but he's provided the goods across the board. He'll probably finish with a higher goal/game ratio than that season too.
For all the talk of how amazing he was that season, he wasn't at all and had slumps of non-form, but he was extremely crucial, and it seems to be the same thing here.
If he can put it all together, and find the balance he needs than he will have one extremely productive season soon.
I think he's getting pretty close. For me, he needs to concentrate a bit more in the build-up. He's great at finding space, gets on the ball a lot, and he's become quite a predator in and around the box.
What he needs is consistant delivery from deep positions, doing the basics right. He'll rack up the assists quickly if he improves on this.
Yeah he was critical of his own perdormance and seemed disappointed that he couldn't hit his usual standards. I'd need to see it again to give specific quotes.
I was just watching some of Rooney's performances in the 09/10 season and there were a lot more great performances from him (notably spurs and arsenal away), there were also some poor performances but the team was poor in general in most of his poorer ones. His overall play that season is probably a bit underrated.
This pretty much sums up my feelings about him.
Out of curiosity, where do you sit on this regarding the 'player of the season' type discussions? Would you say Rooney getting goals in spite of some overall poor performances is just cause for him being touted as our best player of the season?
Personally, as important as goals obviously are, I don't think so. I'd put other players ahead of him as having been better over the course of the season.
It's a tough one. He hasn't had the consistency or effectiveness in his game that he has in past seasons, but his contribution this season has been massive. I'd probably not have him as player of the season, but he'd probably come second, perhaps to Johnny Evans who has played less games overall, but has maintained a level of consistency that has been excellent. With other factors combining his multiple defensive partnerships, the state of our defence at times and injuries, I see his role over the season as more important. I think we could have got some goals elsewhere, maybe not the amount Wayne has provided, but we couldn't have done without Evans at the back.
Just came across this thread today and it struck me that in amongst all the (completely justified) complaints about his all round play this year we've not fully appreciated just how much his finishing has improved. He's now gotten to the stage where we can expect 30 goals plus because he has become genuinely clinical which at one stage did seem a little unlikely. Rewind back to 2008 and that was the main criticism...
Rooneys best spell in his career was the back end of last season and the start of this one. Not only was he scoring but he was also playing brilliantly in the build up too. His all round play has suffered lately but he's still been fairly good, clinical and turned up for the big games. Evans, him and Carrick have been our best players this season with Rooney being the striker I expect he'll win our player of the season.

Some of Rooney's passing that season was absolutely ridiculous. I'll never forget that pass to Giggs in the build up for Scholes' goal against City.
Whenever I'm having an argument about Rooney's playmaking ability I show them that sequence. The first touch to leave Zabaleta or whoever it was bamboozled, and then the Scholes-esque pass to Giggs. That one or his winning the ball off Carvalho in the our corner and launching it out to Ronaldo at the far corner (CL Final 08). Then I say "show me another striker in the world who can do that".
Most complete game in months. 2 more goals to tie his career league best tally of 26...33 for the season. And the small matter of overtaking a couple of club legends in the all time scoring list.
Not to mention, a big performance against Everton - he normally appears either too charged or timid. But balanced it perfectly today.

He said he would work hard in training to be extra sharp for the game and he delivered, credit to him. Better goal ratio than 09/10, one behind overall (in less apps) and has equaled his goal tally of 26 in the league.
Just one goal shy of his best season total yes?
He's on 34 isn't he? The goal against otelul at home was given to him, not an own goal so I think he levelled his best today.
