People can go on about Rooney's poor control and touch when he's off form but atleast he still looks like he can put a chance away no matter how poor his form, which is more than can be said about Van Persie.

So can Hernandez. Does that mean he's suddenly our best player now or better than Van Persie?
Well, definitely Vida and Rio are, if we're talking about them at full health, easily our best defenders. But neither of them has been at full health for quite a while now and I think Evans has taken steps towards replacing one of them (albeit Vida was out for a significant part of the season). It might be slightly controversial, but Evans has been our best defender this season.
Incidentally, my girlfriend is a Serb who supports United, and you can imagine the reaction I got from her when I suggested this to her.
Evans has improved loads, but for me, all you have to do is see our defensive record before and after Vidic's return. Before he came back we were all over the place, conceding goals every game and having a bad defensive record. Since he's come back we've gone back to being a great organized team at the back. I'd rate rio and Evans on the same level personally, but Vidic is a few levels above both of them. This season though its probably fair to say Evans has been our best centre back considering Vidic was out for half of it.
Yeah, people from that part of the world are very defensive about their players. I mean my dad sometimes thinks that Bosnia has one of the best attacks in Europe, and as good as we are, we're just nowhere near that level.

You'd be entitled to that opinion but what evidence would you use to back that opinion up? Probably none because its merely an opinion borne out of an insistence to be facetious. There have even several reasons given by different posters in ths thread as to why Rooney is our most important player in their view. You can't even state with any conviction who our most important player really is in your opinion, just that it's definitely not Rooney

Rooney's the heartbeat of the side. Our attacking play is so much more disjointed without him in the side. Hope he's back for the derby.
To be honest it just goes to show how lucky we are that we have three forwards in our squad with the goalscoring ability of Hernandez, Rooney and RvP that we can debate it. Most other clubs would count themselves lucky to have ONE goalscorer of that calibre.

I don't think RvP offers as much when he's not scoring. Certainly not in the build up.

Fair point. In fairness though, in his entire United career, he has been benched once in a big game. On reflection, RvP getting the nod didn't make much of a difference. I think we could have had Wayne leading the line and the result would have been much the same.
Just my view, but with RvP's blistering start to the season, a few people got over excited and decided that Rooney was no longer pivotal. With Van Persie's subsequent drop off in form, I think we've seen the importance of Rooney to our side, if only to spread the load.
I feel that Rooney links the midfield to attack like no other player in our squad currently does - perhaps Kagawa will develop to the same level.
As an aside, it's now impossible to have a reasoned debate about Rooney on this forum - there's far too many people sore about the whole contract saga.

I see a one in two goal ratio and a healthy smattering of assists too. Not sure what you're looking for to be honest.

I'm not arguing his goalscoring record, simply his other influences on games. Assist stats alone aren't an accurate depiction of what goes on.
For a forward, goals and assists are a fairly good barometer of importance and productivity.
There's a tendency, in this statistical age, to over analyse things. The name of the game is to score more than the opposition. Rooney helps us do that.

Yep, it seems like that across the team. We struggle to get the whole side in form at the same time. Can't remember the last time we put in a complete performance. Perhaps it'll come once this unit matures.
That's the key point for me, as a squad they are still in general a very young side, that's why comparisons to the 08 side are unfair as that was a side at its peak. To keep winning titles whilst the side matures and grows is a hell of an achievement.

He does for me. His touch and technique has been exquisite this season and its given us a new dimension in opening up teams. Not to mention his play with back to goal bringing others in.

True, but I think a lot of it is down to how poor our wingers have been. If we had the Valencia of last season or the Nani of 10/11 then it'd be a different story. They also built their entire team around him, we haven't really done that.

I don't think so. A lot of RvPs goals came from chances he fashioned for himself, out of nothing. The service to him has never been very good.
I don't think there is a problem with the service RVP has been getting he managed to score a shit load in the first few months of the season and he could have had more and he has simply gone off the boil. His finishing has just let him down at times I thought he was going to hit the 40 goal mark but it's just not happening for him, he's even missed a couple of open goals this season so it can't all just be down to service he has to take responsibility for missed chances. I'm sure once he bangs in a goal for us again he will go on a good run scoring a couple a game.
I think you're being harsh on the providers there and it's not like he didn't score goals out of nothing for Arsenal either.
^ That's all his goals so far. Some individual brilliant goals but also some great service to him as well from our players. Very harsh to say 'the service to him has never been very good'.. some great assists in there.
