I think a lot of the PR bullshit can actually be parked if we start to actually see real actions in their stead.
I totally agree, perhaps it is a case of making the right decision but for the wrong reasons. Coming so hot on the heels of the Mata coup they will want the positive spin to continue. Maybe they are making the decision based on common sense and I'm sure Moyes is desperate for him to stay. I do worry that in signing his contract he slips down a few gears and his form goes to shit. He's never been a player United could always rely on to stay fine-tuned and bang in form. For that money I would expect brilliance week-in week-out.
Yup. No matter what one thinks of the manager or the team, results have to improve and changes need to be made.
I think we should keep Rooney, sack Steve, burn his novels, make Rooney captain, manager, actually let him do whatever he wants, the important thing is inflicting misery on Steve in this really.

I think Sparky hates him the most, Steve is just well jealous of his dashing looks more than anything.
I don't hate him, tbh. Sure, I'd rather he was a United loyalist but that's unreasonable of me given his origins. Anyway, I'm glad that the sensible people at United get to make decisions about Wayne rather than have irrational twits like me do it.
It's no secret that I'm not fan of Rooneys but I think we should keep hold of him. He's playing very well now and seems to gave turned a corner this season, and the timing would be absurd. We've starting to put together a really brilliant front 4 that ability wise would match any team around.
However, I don't agree that we should "givehim whatever him he wants" nor should we make him captain, both of which has been suggested by some.

What's wrong with making him captain? He's (rather ironically) been our only player who looks like he actually gives a shit on the field for large portions of this season.
What about SAF. Is he somewhere in between?
I'd be only delighted to see him get the captaincy. Up until all this nonsense started in 2010 and was repeated last year he was an absolute shoe in for the role. I think if we're going to put all that behind us we shouldn't do it by half measures. Give him the job and make him take that responsibility. I get the feeling he's a Moyes man in the dressing room and unless some other obvious contender is bought in the summer I can't see how Wayne could be overlooked again. No other player in the team gives what he does where it matters, on the pitch.

Keeping Rooney would be a great boost. Just because we have signed Mata doesn't mean we should let him go. The idea is to build up a squad of great players, not replace them like for like.

Keep him for the right price. I'd rather spend his pay rise on another young player with potential. We have Kagawa, Mata and Januzaj for the no 10 position.
Januzaj is years away from being a top drawer No10 if in fact he ever does and I'd hate to be relying on Kagawa for that role too.
True we have players who are arguably better No. 10's than Rooney is, but for me, when he's on the field he offers so much more than a traditional No.10. He acts as a striker, 10, CM and a defender at times, and to lose this would be a significant loss.
Now, if Moyes DOES manage to bring in better midfielder's and changes the way we play, then by all means offload Rooney but if he doesn't, losing him could be a huge step in the wrong direction.

Kagawa has shown promise behind the striker, but even if he wasn't an option, we have Mata now. We have RVP, Hernandez and Welbeck as strikers. We really don't need Rooney that much. He has been excellent this season, and him staying with the club will always be an advantage over the opposition, but one season doesn't merit us bending over to Stretford and co. History suggests he's due for a slump in the next 6 months.
Like I said, I would be satisfied with Rooney leaving if the money saved was invested in midfield and defense, to provide more solidity and support to our remaining attackers. I'd prefer he stayed. Just not for 300k a week. It would leave a bitter taste in the mouth if he ever lost form and reverted back to the Rooney of last season who couldn't trap a bag of cement.

Do you realize how much you are contradicting yourself here? In the last 10 years, since Rooney joined United, his one bad season was last season where he had a lot of injuries and was moved around. Even then he was still really productive and played pretty well whenever he played. What exactly does history suggest that he's due a slump? One below par season doesn't suddenly mean he went to shit. It's like people have forgotten how good he's been for us this season.
I think Rooney would of only left if he truelly thought the ship was going down. Hopefully the recent positive transfer news, and im sure conversations with Moyes would have put his mind to rest.

Last season was probably the only season he was below average throughout, however he has had long stretches in his career where he has been just inconsistent. Off the top of my head..
06-07 he was terrible the first half of the season. Went 10 games without scoring a goal.
07-08 he was injured the first game of the season. Struggled with form throughout.
08-09 was brilliant for the first trimester of the season, while Ronaldo was out. Meh the rest of the season.
11-12.
I can only list 05-06, 09-10, 10-11 and this season as seasons where he has been consistently brilliant.
I'm just saying, offer him a decent salary in line with his status in the team. If he demands more and threatens to leave unless his obscene demands are met, feck him.
Rooney's slumps are defined by the periods he goes through without scoring goals. He's considered a top player and as such being an attacker is measured by his goal scoring exploits. He doesn't score regularly as Ronaldo/Messi but, the expectation is there. It's a stick used to beat him with, even though he offers so much more to the team when in a "slump".
Massively underrating him. He's always been a clear player for us and gave us another world class option up front. Obviously Ronaldo would always outperform him but he was always around a 20 goal a season player, getting many assists, as well as helping our team a lot overall.
And yes, we are offering him a salary in line with his current status. His status is being our best and most important player, potentially leading goalscorer of all time, probably captain and most inspirational player on the pitch. Of course he's going to be our highest paid player, as he should be.
Yeah, its like people forget how he basically plays 3 different roles at once for us, being the goalscorer, creator, and dictating the game in midfield. He works harder then anyone and it just shows a lack of understanding of the game to simplify Rooney to just goals. If you want to do that though, look at the two seasons where he was asked to be the main goalscorer. 34 goals both seasons. He's just a world class player who we should do all we can to keep. We can't get rid of him now that we got Mata. The more world class players the better, because it's a lot easier to stop just Mata, or just Rooney, compared to when both are in the team.

I will celebrate everything that will give us a better chance at winning things. Securing Rooney for the rest of his career would be important in just that.

Yeah, people tend to forget that even in his so-called excellent seasons, he would go through substantial periods of being poor.
He's always been inconsistent and always will be. He's not worth 300k per week, especially when you consider how bad he can truly be at times.

I would hate making Rooney captain, although I don't know what other options we would have except maybe De Gea but it's probably too early for him. Van Persie instead of Rooney perhaps.
That's pretty much the opposite of how it's been the last couple of years. His slumps have resulted in some shocking general play, whilst still managing to grab goals.

He'd not get the armband until next season, the added responsibility is something I could he him relishing in. He's been know to dig players out when they need telling at this moment in time I can't see any other than him as ideal for that role.

Oh how I agree with you. I think you are spot on. No way does he deserve 300.000 a week (no one does, but that's a different matter), and he shouldn't be awarded for his conduct either. If he doesn't want to play for the team and be a part of the team, then as you say - feck him. He brings attention to the club, be it good or bad, and according to some, there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Spot on. I want to criticize him many a times, but then he scores a goal and makes an assist; it's hard to say someone plays shit when they do that. Overall though, his play is a bit hit and miss for me. His first touch and his short passing leaves little to be desired for a world class player. His work rate and stats are indeed world class though.
His technique really is woeful at times. There have been plenty of games when he's been atrocious throughout, but the history books will only show the goal/assist he got, which is the only thing the stat-munchers on here will remember. People will bang on about him being amazing because he can score goals whilst playing poor, but I'm afraid you have to consistently deliver the whole package to justify the ridiculous wages that he wants.
