Wayne Rooney is a Manchester United great - so why is he not more loved?

I'm sure it's been touched on in this thread but another memory I have is that after he got his big contract in 2010, the rest of the season in 2010/11 (bar the overhead kick against City) he was absolute shite in most games which was just rubbing salt into the wounds.

I'm sure some will be along to tell me that never happened but I remember it very clearly and how outraged supporters were at his lack of quality despite being given a major, major pay increase.
First half of the season he was awful though he played better free he could finally be arsed getting himself into shape to play football. Though in the City game he was woeful.

Bollocks* the problem is that Rooney was our only genuine threat, so obv our fans will get a big lift when he is in the team, did he not play shit anyway? Where as Muller isn't. Believe me though when Muller isn't in the team, the opposition is happy, that goes for both Bayern and Germany

Not doubting that. Plenty of other United fans will agree with how good Rooney was in that period if you think otherwise that's your opinion, again agree to disagree. And you also make a good indirect point, would like to see Muller in a team where he is the main man.

Maybe you weren't following United at the time (maybe why you are downplaying Rooney in this period) but he was very good until he injured his foot and had to go off, which then coincided with Bayern getting back into the game

Oh I remember. He also did it the last time when he got his bigger contract from Moyes. Played well up until he got what he wanted and then went back to mediocrity. I swear he's taking the piss.

Which Bayern game are you referring to? Yes I was following United at the time. I actually thought you were talking about Rooney when we played Bayern under Moyes.

The point I am making though is that Rooney at his peak as a striker was not considered amoungst the most elite IMO. He was just a level below, there is no shame in that, he is/was a fantastically gifted footballers and one of the best strikers/players we have had.
He has never IMO been amougst the likes of Ruud, Ronaldo(9), Henry etc all of whom were prolific strikers around the time when Rooney has been at United.

Where as I believe Muller can be counted amougst the elite in his position.

No this one : http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8604742.stm

Imo that season he was one of the best in the world.

He was one the best strikers in Europe that season for goals for sure. He wasn't one of the 'best in the world' though. He went to S.Africa with England and looked pants.

@2mufc0 this is my point.

At his peak, he was a VERY good striker, outstanding player. However not considered amougst the elite strikers IMO you have to be consistent over seasons for that.
Incidently, guess who was top goalscorer at that world cup ;) at the age of just 21

Yeah he shouldn't have gone to that world cup because of his injury, i think he admitted that himself in his documentary also Fergie didn't want him to go either.

Like i said still needs to do a bit more, best way would be come to United and take us to the next level :).

Van Persie had a legitimate reason to leave Arsenal. He wanted to win the league. If he cared deeply about the state of the squad then why did he sign a contract when no players had been signed and why did he sign his last one when we were in much worse shape?
Cause of the backlash, sir alex said as much.
Very different between 2013 and 2010. In 2010 he was one of the golden boys of the sport, 3 years later his decline was already starting to get visible. He'd be mad not to sign the current deal we put on the table.
Crazy talk. We're talking about potential world cup all time goalscorer Muller here?
We're talking about potential all time united goal scorer. We're talking about the greatest all time England goal scorer.

Rooney better than muller???

Which muller? Gerd muller? Thomas muller?

Lol. Seriously.. By the time muller hangs his boots his medal will be twice of rooney.

The only edge he has over muller is that he starts at 16 (and finished at 28)
Lots of players that were better than Muller have less medals than he does. Let's also not act like a 5 time prem champion and CL winner, 2 time finalist, is lacking in medals.

Müller has easily done as much as Rooney, so claiming he has something to prove to be considered on the same level as Rooney is ludicrous. He's well beyond that.

So again. More worried about himself than the club? He didn't care then and he doesn't care now. That's why there's no hypocrisy to be seen. So it's ok not to want the club to be ambitious when you're no longer good enough? Are you stopping for a second to think about this before you hit the post reply button?

Yeah, waving 5 against muellers???

Seriously???

The guy won a fecking treble and a world cup, and a world cup finalist.

You're waving 5 prem??? Seriously???

I'd be very surprised if Muller doesn't get remember as a better player than Rooney. He's already won all a player can win, while being influential for his club and country in doing so.

He's still only just turned 26, and while he's always consistently scored 10+ goals (like Rooney has often done), he really seems to be coming into his stride this season and getting even better as a goalscorer. He's an extremely versatile, influential player who looks like he's going to keep getting better. He's comfortably better right now than Rooney, and his current level is arguably more impressive than Rooney's top level.

 the funny thing in Muller has 4 league titles anyway and will surpass 5 easily at 30 years of age
