Jose Mourinho: 'Wayne Rooney will remain Manchester United captain'

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will continue to be the club's captain this season.

Mourinho has leapt to the defence of the 30-year-old, insisting that he will be a "very important player" for his side during the upcoming campaign.

"I am quite surprised with so many question marks around this guy. I know that at the national team level you have this capacity of trying to make things complicated for yourself, so what happened around him in the summer was not a surprise for me," Mourinho told reporters.

"But in my club we are not going to have that. He is the club captain, he is the manager's captain, he is the players' captain. I trust him a lot. I think he's going to be a very important player for me and no problem for him.

"He knows that he has to work hard, he knows that but I think that is nothing new in his career. Everything he got I see nobody offer him, he had to fight for it. With me it is not going to be different. But, yes, he is my captain."

This will be a shock to so many posters who have made Rooney a bit-part player next season. What do you think now?

Don't think many thought he would lose the captaincy or not start behind Zlatan.

What we do expect is for Mourinho to drop him if he continues like last season.

Hardly a surprise. Mourinho won't strip him off the captaincy without even giving him time to prove himself. IF he under performs, then I can see Mourinho benching him and effectively appointing someone else for captaincy.

We have another LvG in the making here, lads.

Well, in the first place, Rooney should earn that starting berth, considering the competition is more than ever this season.

I still think that Rooney will be out of the team by Xmas and out of the club next Summer because he's finished at this level and I trust Jose to deal with that.

Not a surprise to see him kept as captain. Anyone expecting otherwise was a bit mental. Now hopefully this doesn't mean he's untouchable like he was under Van Gaal.

Results are always number one with Jose, results will dictate whether he's in the team or not.

Oh come on! My dislike of Rooney personal antics are as strong as the next, but it's crystal clear now that he was severely handicapped by LVGs philosophy last year. He was playing to instructions til Xmas last year, when we all criticised Him, and then went renogrede from January, when his form significantly improved.

I'm more than happy to trust Mourinho on his assessment. He has not had a manager who beliefs in him, plays him in his most natural position with players of his ability around him for quite a few years now. But with the pace of Myki and Martial and the power of Ibra in front, I'm hopeful we'll see a Renaissance.

If not, we can reassess, but as fans we have to trust our manager knows what he is doing and not diss him because we have preconceived ideas!

Van Gaal played Rooney wherever Rooney felt like playing it seemed like. Instead of just dropping him for poor form he'd just try and shoehorn him in elsewhere. What out of interest do you think is his natural position? Because he's played in 3 or 4 different ones in the last few years and been shite in them all.

I've been hearing these excuses made for Rooney for years.

Said a few weeks ago, I believe there is zero chance Rooney won't be playing. After all he's a player Jose not long ago heavily chased and he's the current club captain.

Jose is very loyal to players he likes. Ivanovic was one of Chelsea's main culprits last season and he's never dropped despite being targeted by opposition teams week in week out. So I see no reason to expect anything different.

Since I expect Rooney to get picked regularly hopefully he ups his performances big time this season. I don't know I've this feeling that he'd probably have one of his best seasons.

And what happened after that 4-5 game run in January? He came back to what he has been in the last 3 seasons, a shadow of himself.

My comparison between LvG and Jose was more because of the comment. As far as I remember, LvG said exactly the same thing when he took charge.

The only reason I see Rooney improve is because of the competition he now faces. A never-fading Ibra, Mikhi, Martial and then Herrera-Pogba. This is much more than the last 3 season combined. It's basically play or perish this season.

As long as he gets dropped if he plays shit, otherwise Mourinho's signing his own P45 and relegation from elite manager status

As long as it's not another case of "the captain shall always play" then I don't care.

Well I have 2 thoughts. 1, people don't learn from history, where did appointing Rooney captain get the previous 2 managers. 2, club captain doesn't necessarily have to always play, Neville in his last 2 years (2 weeks) springs to mind.

guys, relax. Jose dropped John fecking Terry at half-time against City. He's ruthless. Rooney is not going to get away with bad performances.

Yeah he's not going to get preferential treatment but I do believe Jose will get him to play much better than he did last season.

If so I hope Mourinho starts him on the bench and uses him occasionally like he did with Drogba in the 14/15 season.

And what happened after that 4-5 game run in January?

What happened is that he got injured.
I don't think saying that he'd still return to shite form, even if he hasn't picked up an injury, is needed here.
Let's give it some time, stand behind our manager and hope that Rooney plays as we want him too. If he doesn't, I am sure Jose won't hesitate for 15 games... 2-3 games would be enough for him.

I wasn't expecting anything else. I'm convinced we'll have a different captain next season though. Hopefully we have De Gea in mind. We need a leader that gets the job done.

He was always going to go into the season as captain. The only question is; Will Mourinho drop him if Rooney starts underperforming for long periods again. Something LvG failed to do.

Whether he likes it or not.. how he handles the inevitable under performance of Rooney will determine if he is a success here or not.

what happened in the summer with England anyway that wasn't a surprise to him? All the media were gushing about him pulling the strings. Then he collapsed against Iceland by himself

Remaining a club captain means almost feck all anyway. Xavi was still the captain of Barcelona in his last season there and he wasn't starting automatically anymore.

This. Insist on playing and playing and playing him despite form and he will fail.

First decision I dont agree with from Mourinho.

I hope he doesnt go down the same route and my captain shall always play joke
