Wayne Rooney withdraws from England squad, minor knee injury

Is there anything on this forum that doesn't get described as "Disgraceful" or "Shocking."

The reason I brought up Keane was that it's now been decided you can't be a good captain and get drunk. Blatantly untrue.

There is some puritanical nonsense being spouted in this thread.

The worst part of modern day football is the ever increasing gap between fan and player. So when I see Rooney getting pissed like we might I quite like it. That's something I can relate to. The guys who live in their big glass houses, who never step foot into the city for which they play do nothing for me.
Are you being intentionally ignorant?

meh, Southgate should have given them the Sunday off to celebrate. Spain was only a friendly. Rooney going on the beer is only affecting himself anyway.

Think I'm going to be sick.
I'd imagine Jose is tearing his hair out. He has a press conference this week and apart from his own comments, wise or not, he now has the press wanting to know the ins and outs of Rooney's drinking habits. Knowing the press there will be little information about the actual game we have to play on Saturday. Rooney has been playing like he's drunk, maybe getting drunk he will play like he's sober.

Your last paragraph is a mess.

Its time for him to leave. United have a complacency problem and he's the very epitome of it

So Rooney gets injured on Friday night, gets assessed on Saturday and finds out that he will miss the game on Tuesday and by that reasoning training until at least Wednesday we can assume.

He gets drunk on Saturday night so will have three days to recover before his first day of training, if he is training today.

We can safely assume that if he has breached his code of professional conduct as an England and United player that he will be punished accordingly.

Does anyone actually know what England and United's policy is on drinking when injured or not training?

I don't get why you're all so precious about this. You've got posters who are claiming to be shocked and insulted! Did you all previously believe footballers didn't drink mid season? That Giggs never got drunk during his 20 year long career?

It is the context of the situation.

Take into account the precarious position Wayne is in right now with regards to his career, added to the fact he's a) captain and it is close to big international friendly against a team where it is important that England play well to build some confidence and b) an arsenal game which is imperative to the spirit of our club, if we get hammered.. the hacks will be on our back yet again.

It is the fact that he doesn't have the body type or the fitness to carry such a bender off.. someone like Giggs is so lean, he could tuck into 5 kebabs, eat out Natasha and Imogen, put away 10 vodka bottles and still pull off a blinder.. yet here was a guy who was not willing to eat margarine and taking up yoga.

People have cited the examples of Best and Ronaldinho to justify his behaviour.. WTF? they were more talented than Rooney and could probably play well drunk but look how early their careers finished at the top level and yet this fat bastard who is nowhere near as talented is milking club and country to the point where he has been past it for four years and yet is still getting backed by media, management and idiots who call themselves United fans.

If it was pre season, I'd still be pissed off with Rooney because some players can pull off having a drink and then they can be trusted to still stay fit.. a guy like him should be treating his body like a temple if he has any chance of prolonging his career. He needs to be binned simple as and anyone justifying his antics is a fool.

Has Gary Neville commented on this just yet?

If he was injured why didn't he just go straight home?

The idea that the only effect of a drunken binge is, simply the lack of training is false.
If it's a habit, as it seems to be the case with him, the effects are much deeper than that and have a cumulative effec, especially for an athlete.
Having a match in 6 days time, is not an excuse to drink to a stupor.

Are you saying that the FA or United prohibit players from having a night out from time to time? I don't know for sure either way but I would be surprised if this isn't just another chapter in Redcafe's quest to crucify Rooney. A storm in a tea cup.
Surely he would have been better coming home to the club to start treatment, than getting pissed, staying up to god knows what time, probably having to sleep the whole day, when he could have been in the treatment room to get ready for a very important club game.

How do you work that out though. If he was regularly getting slaughtered in town etc do you not think we would hear about it?

If he has breached his professional code of conduct then I'm sure the FA or the club will take action and we will hear about it. I find it entirely likely that he was given a few days off though as he is not due back to United until today or tomorrow.

I absolutely love how someone liked this incident because it helped him relate to a footballer

He might not have been due back to United today or tomorrow if he's fit. I would imagine they would want him to be assessed and treated as soon as possible. Now days have been wasted. Unless he know his United career is as good as over anyway.

Surely the bigger issue here is that the 'injury' he has can be called into question. Is he actually injured at all or just not fit to train and this was their cover?

I know but the point I'm making is the drinking bit is either just an excuse not to pick him or he really was injured . Cahill still played last night, and he was drinking at the wedding apparantly.

Wasn’t it Jagielka who was out drinking with Rooney?

He could have a serious problem or this could be his first drink since the summer. No one knows.

We will just have to see this weekend. If he is sharp then a non story.

Hope he scores and we see some sort of drunken celebration. The celebration vs Spurs was fantastic after the whole Bardsley nonsense in the media.

I think it’s safe to say it’d be a drunken celebration, given that he’s played drunk for a couple of years now.

Those are assumptions and yes I'm making them too. I think we will hear if Rooney has breached club order to get drunk in due course if he indeed did.

Look at the timeline. It makes sense that he got injured and was released from training and not having to go back to United until the appointed time.

I reckon a great many of his 'minor' injuries were actually 'major' hangovers. Serious chance he might go down Gazza's route.

In which case a player who wants to improve, get fit, improve the team's form, be a leader and an example to younger teammates, might get back to the club instead of using those extra days off for boozing and recovering from that.

Either way, it doesnt look good for Rooney, whether it was a real injury or one done as a cover. Whenever he found out he was injured, im not sure which is worse.

That he knew he was injured but still drank late into the night
or
he didnt know he was injured, so would have been there for England vs Spain (even if on the bench), went drinking, then found out he was injured.

Wtf, it is about a pro athlete not taking well enough care of his body in order to maximise his output. Something which he is being extremely well paid to do - when he's retired he can drink himself into oblivion whenever he feel like it.

As for Keane, he said himself that his drinking took its toll on him physically and he had to wise up as he got older.

Not really but then I'm not permanently offended.

I can deal with a player having a few drinks a week before his next game.
Judging from your response, a yes would have sufficed.

It really doesn't. He played every minute of the game against Scotland and Englnad only announced he was 'injured' after he'd been out drinking heavily. The timeline would suggest the exact opposite. When did he get injured? He didn't train on the Monday.

It's clearly not just afew drinks, he was shitfaced

And yes it's insulting for those of us who take over 15 years to earn what he does in a week an spend a huge amount following united, or socialising based around the club/games

An he can't be professional enough to stay sober? He earns a reported 300k a week. The rules are different for him. So yeah it's insulting I'll say it again.

Two, three maybe even four beers is acceptable with downtime but a captain going on a full on bender in this day and age knowing his responsibilities is very disrespectful.

I'm sorry but what's the amount he earns got to do with him getting drunk?? If none of us earn as much as he does then that's really not his problem, is it? He's paid to play football which is what he does. People here now suddenly believing everything the Sun says and just assuming that he might have a drinking problem really screams of people needing just any reason to have a go at Rooney.

Unless he passes out on the pitch during a match I don't think its disrespecting anybody. If he's not training or playing good enough Jose will drop him as he's done before. So I really don't get the fuss around him drinking or partying all night. Its his free time and his life. Anyone who gets offended by this or expects every Utd footballer to behave like a saint is living in a world far away from reality.

Not very well I might add.
