Welbeck: He's ready!

appalling thread this...started with someone prematurely ejaculating and ended in a pointless argument with Allforone being called a retard over and over purely because he doesn't think Wellbeck is the next Thierry Henry......Classic example of why people think there's a football forum Mafia on this place

He almost certainly will. Very classy young player.

Patience is the key with Welbeck, and mostly from posters!;)

He is filling out gradually, it takes time and you can see the ability there. With some playeres you just need to leave them alone to develop and stop the constant scrutiny, Welbeck is one.

Welbeck is a good young player, not a great young player.

It's 50/50 fir me at the moment as to whether he'll make it at United.

A top centre forward that can consistently put the ball in the back of the onion bag is a must next summer.

Now you know and I know that's just not true.

Plenty of room for differing opinions on players but when people wade in with sweeping generalisations about specific aspects of a player's game - that are blatantly inaccurate - chances are their post will attract criticism. How they react to that criticism usually dictates the content of the rest of the thread.

...but just calling someone retarded over and over isn't an argument either Pogue. There's two sides to this coin. Saying he was superb yesterday is equally retarded to me, but no one seems to be jumping on that...I think he will make it personally, but I also won't be completely surprised if he's offloaded to spurs in 2 seasons and becomes another Darren Bent. Which isn't a bad thing of course, but for a player who's first team performances have hardly been sensational, just saying "well you don't know your football, you're incredibly retarded, I'm not arguing with you anymore etc etc" is a much worse argument than saying "I don't think his first touch is good." at least it's a tangible explanation.

The argument went uber-gay uber-quickly, I agree.

The original comment from Allforone that fired people up was particularly daft though and was bound to attract criticism. Anyone who's watched Welbeck play in more than just his first-team cameos knows that saying his "basic ball control is average" is just nonsense. feck it, even if you have only watched his first team cameos you'd still realise it's nonsense.

A couple of people over-reacted then Allforone started behaving just as childishly and it all spiralled from there. What did not happen was a coordinated attack on someone who dared suggest that Welbeck is not the next Thierry Henry.

I'm convinced he'll make it. I've seen enough of him in both first team and reserve team games to realise he's got bags of ability and potential. We might not have seen the best of him last night, but we did see glimpses of it. I just hope he gets more chances up front.

Secondly, SAF really likes him so I'm sure he'll get the chances to succeed at the club. Even though the majority might come in wide areas!

I thought the kids did really well with the only real disappointment seeing them fade in the second half. I`m sure regular top flight football would hone them up for the full 90 minutes & certainly Welbeck & Macheda showed plenty enough potential to confirm inclusion in front of Owen.

I don't think they did that well particularly, remember this was against a side who had scored just one goal previously in this competition so far and were beaten 8-0 by Liverpool last year...However I've got absolutely zero beef with them being given a run out. It actually excites me more to see them given a go in these types of games than it would have done to see a first string side breeze through...First half in particular was genuinely enjoyable and exciting to watch...more so because of the chance to see 'The Future' as it were. We'll draw with Wolfsburg I'm sure and it won't matter that we lost here....I don't really give a stuff about that 8 year record...All in all it's a sort of 'meh', as Pogue said, and we'll move on. No harm done I reckon. Touch wood.

This season however they started badly but recently have not conceded in 7.5 hrs including last night.

It was only one possible future.I'm sure SAF has in his mind the players who may not have a future at Utd as much as those who have. Given the opportunity they must seize it.

Agree with the record. All nonsense. If we were to have lost it in the next round and be knocked out I'd be plenty pissed off but I'm sure that losing the record was far from SAF's mind

He's not played up alongside Rooney yet has he?

To the best of my knowledge he's partnered Tevez, Macheda, and Owen (after Macheda got subbed early v Wolves)...

No he hasn't. He's played up front with Berbatov and they both really linked up well against Southampton last season.

Welbeck was very very good in the first half hour or so.

Not so good after that but this was his first game back from injury. Don't expect many to take that into account.

Didn't realise he's been injured - he looked exhausted later on.

I think some are on a WUM in this thread because from what I saw of Welbeck we'd be idiots to let go of him.

To answer the OP. No he's not ready yet.

But thats to be expected of such a young striker. My issue with Welbeck has to do with his goal threat. He has shown before that he can be a good finisher and can really test a keeper with his shots. Last night he scuffed shots too often and lacked power for a player of his size. Of course his physique should develop in time and hopefully he can add more strength to his game. He looks effortless with the ball and his build up play is usually very good. He just needs to practice being sharper in the final third so he can realise his full potential.

He has every chance of being a success here.

He's nowhere near ready but is showing enough promise to warrant some more first team action.

I would prefer that he only plays upfront whenever he is given a chance though, Fergie has tended to throw him in on the wing in the past.

Agree totally with you. He's got a hell of a lot of hard work and improvement to make before he can be considered ready to make the step up.
He does look to be ahead of the rest of the youngsters at the moment though.

Sorry guys Im not convinced, I hope Im wrong but I still cant see him being a first teamer in 3/4 years.

I agree but more because I don't think Fergie will ever have the bollocks to give a young striker the time up front to flourish. The cheque book'll be out for a Benzeema/young Rooneyesque striker as soon as we need to replace one of the first choice 3.

his full name is
Daniel nii tackie mensah welbeck

he has to make it .. how can he not with a name like that

Welbeck certainly is ready, but not week in week out yet. He has shown the potential, which is why he is getting games. But certainly a 16 yr old Rooney was in a different class. Players like Rooney/ Gascoinge ala genius at a very young age are very rare. I wouldn't mind letting Welbeck play games like this till he is 21. He still can improve more on every aspects of his game.

WELBECK LEARNING FROM THE MASTER

WELBECK: Learning from Michael Owen
By Jeremy Butler, 05/12/2009

DANNY WELBECK reckons he is learning how to score goals from the master.

The 19-year-old hitman has been picking up tips from Michael Owen during Manchester United training sessions.

And Welbeck hopes that copying the former England striker will propel him into United's starting line-up soon.

He said: "Playing with Michael Owen is amazing. He is a world-class finisher.

"If he misses one he never hides, he's always there to get in the right position for the next time.

"His movement off the ball is fantastic. I've been watching and learning. He doesn't take many touches in the box. He catches the keeper off guard with quick-fire shots."

Welbeck has enjoyed the backing of boss Alex Ferguson this season and is now pushing for a regular place.

He added: "It's always good to hear positive stuff from the manager but I don't sit there and think it will all fall into place.

"It's time to work harder than ever, take heed of the manager's words and push on.

"I've only just turned 19 so I am just taking it step by step and, hopefully, one day I will be an integral part of the set-up."

IMO welbeck has a ways to go before he should be considered for a place on the bench, tends to show to much of the ball, needs to learn few tricks to beat a man.
I prefer the raw talent of macheda, and think of the 2 he will go on to be top player and italian international.

there's always a feeling that Macheda might go back to Italy as he develops whereas Wellbeck is unlikely to go anywhere as long as he has a place here. Of the two it's difficult to pick one over the other because of differing styles but I like both.

goodluck with that :p

Welbecks level is very similar to kiko. They could both be top players for United and don't get me started on King, who could be a gem. I know you never mentioned him but I did :)

You prefer the raw talent of Kiko, yet ignore the fact that he is guilty of the same sins as Danny. The only difference is Kiko spends more time in the box.

Has Welbeck scored since Owen`s arrival at OT??

He would be better off taking scoring tips from Gary Nev!

Yes

Welbeck scored in the Carling Cup, not Barnsley, the round before, was that Wolves, was a nice link-up with Owen if i remember it correctly

EDIT
In fact, he scored against Barnsley as well didn't he

He was decent tonight. Lovely bit of skill in the middle of the park and then a good flick for Evra shortly after. Shooting-wise he had the right ideas but couldn't pull it off.

Danny was like a breath of fresh air replacing the very static and pointless dribbling of Obertan tonight, I would have liked if he scored but he did very well.
He's more ready than any other youngster in the club

His first touch is too erratic. Usually needs a lot of time to think when he's on the ball. Other than that its all positives.
