I don't know if this is the right forum; I suppose being released by Sunderland still means he can be hired by another club but for me there is a tinge of sadness associated with this news. A player who was a team member of our club at the height of its greatest success and being released by a club that's frequently struggling for Premiership survival sounds like, well, he's worthy of something more. Perhaps, retiring gracefully rather than being released and going on to play for other inferior clubs is a sad way to go.

I could be looking at him with rosy-tinted spectacles but when he first came on the scene he showed so much promise. Like Rashford, he's a Manchester boy who came threw the ranks. He was the kind of player all the fans wished he'd suceeded. However, with two superior central defenders already first choice, and with recurring injuries, Wes never really fulfilled his potential and was eventually moved on.

Good luck Wes, no matter which club you end up with.

He's 36 now. Really unlucky with injuries, but he was such a good defender to watch.

Retire... 36 now and 37 in October - only 6 PL appearances last year - perhaps he will go to a promoted club to add experience (hull?) but he cant be short of a few quid if he wants to hang his boots up and get his golf handicap down

He was involved in 99 wasn't he... he's like a link to a bygone Era. A living fossil!

Anyway, sad to see. A classy, dependable player.

'Released by Sunderland'

You know that's the nail in the coffin when you get to hear those words.

Used to be one of my favorite players. Injuries really slowed him down.

Would love to have him back at OT as a coach.. if he is into that..
All ex players welcome.. Oshea can come along too.. when he retires.

Immense in 07/08 season. His performance against Barca in those two games were amazing.

played a beautiful cross to Ronnie in moscow to go up 1-0. he's orange!

He could have become a world class player. His injuries fecked him up.

Poor lad, he had to carry OShit for most of his career

Hard, no nonsense, local lad, i'll always remember him as a legend. I miss watching our opponents get brwned these days.

He can teach our academy kids how to Brwned people!

I used to love Wes! Hampered severely by injuries though.

I reckon this should be in the United forum, but anyway, best of luck. Was one of my favourite unsung hero at the club - especially that season where he played right back and was like a brick wall. Loved his commitment to United.

Given his injuries I'm amazed he's played as long as he has to be honest. Very fond memories of him with us, plus a few against!

Probably a few players out there who wished they never fulfilled their potential Wes Brown style: 7 PL's, 2 UCL's, 2 FA Cups and 3 League cups.

One of my favourite United songs of all time, and a bloody cracking footballer.

I was at the Leeds game when he made his debut and could see the makings of a really good defender. Then got moved to right back and was class for roughly season. Yeah that's right, class. Then injuries caught up with him and rather than just be a bit part player picking up 50k a week sitting on the bench went off to get first team regular action. I was on the beach in Seaburn with the kids a couple of years ago and him and a couple of other Sunderland players came down with a bag of balls with one of the coaches for a kick about and a few stretches. I was a bit awestruck of wes I must admit, not arsed on the other players who were there.

He was the the underrated player in our last CL winning squad. Always loved Brown. He was not world class, but he always delivered.

Was a cracking player, great servant to the club and a tough little sod, enjoy your retirement wes

He's big, he's black, he's Wesley Brown!

He was a top defender when fit for us.

Better in his prime and when fit than any defender we currently have at the club (save, perhaps although this is only on potential, Shaw).

Class. He's what Chris Smalling wishes he was.

I really had a soft spot for Wes, Good defender, yeah had some mares but who doesn't. I can probably see him going the pundit route. Good luck Wes!!

P.s first post in the mains, hello all
