Wes Brown released by Sunderland

Probably time to hang up his boots then unless Steve Bruce is interested in signing him. Good player for us at his peak. Was incredibly dependable.

Easily the best RB we've had since Neville retired.

Got the assist for Ronaldo's goal in the CL final as well, and that performance against Barca when Vidic injured was as good as any.

He's big, he's bad, he's Wesley Brown, the hardest man, in all the town, with orange hair beware, come an av a go if you dare!

I remember the lads in training saying he was by far the toughest tackler. Very fond memories of the lad and hope he finds something to enjoy doing now he's hung his boots up.

My granda was a youth scout for several premier league teams. He told me years ago that Wes Brown was one of the most talented young players that he ever watched come through the English systems. Also said that even from a young age he was "built like a fecking tank compared to the rest of the players"

Shame that he never really fulfilled his potential

He was involved in 99 wasn't he... he's like a link to a bygone Era. A living fossil!

Anyway, sad to see. A classy,
dependable player.

He was coming through properly in the treble season, only seems like yesterday he was playing for us and he was such a naturally gifted all round defender.

7 PL winners medals and 2 CL medals - not many players can boast better than that!

When you put it like that it really shows how dominant we were were for 20 years as Wes Brown hasn't been with us for years and only came through in the treble season yet won 7 league titles, 2 champions leagues, 2 FA cups and 3 league cups as well as 20 odd caps for England so even though getting released by Sunderland is about as bad as it gets in the premier league he's had a great career.

I feel old now. I had the privilege of a weeks trial for greater Manchester school boys back in 95 (I think) and Wes was there, Richie Wellens also as I recall. It was this week in particular that i realised how shit at football I was.

You could see from 10miles away even at age 15 that he was going to make it.

My only claim to fame.

The number of training ground injuries will drop sharply at Sunderland now. Particularly to ex-Liverpool dickwit, Borini.

Had he not been so blighted by injuries, we probably wouldn't have bought Rio. Wes was such a great defender and he was also quick. Bury let his brother go as well recently, not a good summer for the Brown boys. If he is to hang up his boots and if he's thinking of coaching, I'm sure he'll do a decent job.

He just never kicked on. Brilliant for a 20 year old but then barely changed for the rest of his career. Unusual.

Wes Brown signed for Sunderland 3 months after Neville retired.

I really had a soft spot for Wes, Good defender, yeah had some mares but who doesn't. I can probably see him going the pundit route. Good luck Wes!!

P.s first post in the mains, hello all

His bad games usually came when he was coming back from injuries.

He wasn't like Rio that he could slip in easily after a few weeks out. Wes needed a few games to get back to his best.

One of the things that made me always notice about him at united was that I never saw him complain to refs about any calls and foul against/for him.

Which is a very amazing and odd thing in football.

Since we’re talking about Wesley here, does anyone know the exact date he joined United? It was in 1992 before he turned 13, but even after quite a bit of sourcing, can’t find it. Same date for Fletcher missing as well, only know he joined in 1995 (March, I think). Doing a summary of some United greats and this info would come handy.

The first time I saw him for us was in the Munich testimonial game where Cantona played...and he tackled Gazza...being pretty naive about football at that time, I actually thought what he did was amazing and 'he's going to be a top player'. Unlike other young players coming through at the same time, he was calm, sure of himself, just played his natural game without any fuss and was solid.

He was a key player for us when we won back the title in 2003. A key player in 2008. He should get a testimonial when he retires.

Love Wes and hope he retires with a bit of class left.. One of the real unsong heroes of the club.. Sadly he never got his superstar status due to injuries..

Was always dependable. I always remember 2 things about him. His cross for Ronnie in CL final and the fact he ALWAYS copied rios hair :lol:

This. It is almost the same with Scholes, everytime he was whistled by the ref, what he did is to finger his own ears.

I always liked him. My favourite successful youth product since Co92.

Very reliable whenever we needed him, including for the biggest of games.
