Wesley Sneijder

It might have spread from a website glitch or it mightn't have, but why is the idea that a company, with a profit motive, would help invest in an asset that would increase their own profits so inconceivable?

Surely there are some laws against directly funded transfers with such motives?

So this is what will happen. SAF will deny we're in for Sneijder. His reply will have no indication whatsoever we're singing him. Posters on here will formulate reasons why what SAF said means that we're imminently about to sign Sneijder. So called Twitter ITKs will jump on it. Press reports will continue to link us with him. They'll site reasons why his wife and his dog's behaviour indicate he might come to us. Muppets will post fantasy United formations with Sneijder in...until the next press conference. Then the cycle will continue

Hey, Sneijder's dog was doing the Sharpey Shuffle last night, I swear. It must be a sign!

It seems unlikely that it would increase their profits by a significant amount.

I doubt a simple cost-benefit analysis would reveal anything other than a major net profit increase. But I could be wrong, so do elaborate?

Don't know if it's bollocks, but have anyone seen this yet?

'latest sneijder 'rumours': deal could be done soon, with sneijder having met his wife n family just yesterday, since to move to england, his missus must say okay also.. apparently she is quite keen on e idea.. also, some tweets between sneijder's mum and another soccer mum, mrs. gorre, dutch mother of a man utd academy player kenji gorre (can check it out, player really exists) were mentioning news of a move to old trafford and stuff.. lets hope then'

I would be surprised if anyone genuinely related or involved with Sneijder would be silly enough to give any hints on what may or may not be happening.

Of course it would, do you have any idea how far our global reach is? Ronaldo brings in the £s at Real in shirt sales every year, at a club of our stature with the markets we are tapped into a new world class player would sell tonnes of shirts. Amounts we probably couldn't put a figure to.

And how many shitloads of shirts do you think we have to sell simply because of Sneijder to compensate for .. say £10 million ? I have never got the impression that football fans in England buy tons of shirts because of new players. Most of them would probably buy the shirt regardless - but perhaps choose Sneijders name rather than Giggs or Chicharito

I don't know if this whole situation is bollocks but if Sneidjer comes here, then we will get a lot of money form shirt sales. It is not only the fans in the Engand who will but fans worldwide. From US to Japan, so many United fans would buy a Sneijder shirt. So it will be a big deal for us and Nike.

It's times like these you wish we had an account where fans all over the world could help out with whatever money they got to raise the funds for these sort of transfers and wages. I would gladly send a £50 - marked "transfer money".

I'm jealous of Barca right now. We need to respond with a Sneigning of our own.

When Torres arrived at Chelsea, his shirts outsold all others including plain ones ten times over, I've heard figures of 300,000 sales.

Me neither.

The 27-year-old Argentine saw his hopes of returning to South America to be closer to his family dashed when Brazilians Corinthians pulled out of a £40million deal.

But his representative Kia Joorabchian remains confident new offers will soon be tabled.

One such bid could be imminent if newspaper reports in Italy are to be believed, with claims Tevez met Inter technical director Marco Branca in Sardinia yesterday to discuss a possible transfer.

Whatever the outcome of that meeting, Joorabchian believes there will be plenty of interest in Tevez, who has his heart set on quitting City.

Joorabchian said: ‘This is Carlos Tevez we are talking about, one of the best players in the world. We are not overly worried [over the Corinthians deal collapsing].

‘He wants to leave but is still a City player at the moment and we will of course respect that. We’ve just got to wait and see who comes in next.’

City and Joorabchian have differing opinions on why the transfer did not go through, with the Blues claiming Corinthians were unable to provide a bank guarantee for the £40m.

Joorabchian, though, said: ‘[It] came down to haggling over a relatively small amount of money. To say Corinthians could not provide guarantees for the money is nonsense.'
It'll be a cash deal, not a swap!

A major net profit increase? I'm not seeing any evidence for that.

Yeah, but it's the club's reach. Sure, there might be a lot of people who'd go out and buy Sneijder shirts if we bought him, but what's to say those same people wouldn't have gone out and got Rooney or Chicharito or Nani on the back of their shirts if we hadn't signed him? I can't see Sneijder having a great pull on people to support Manchester United.

A lot of people will buy Sneijder jerseys. I know I will.

Will folk be buying more than one United top? I reckon stick on alphabets is the way to go. This way you could tailor your kit depending on your mood.

So is your purchase of a United jersey dependent on us signing Sneijder? People for whom that is the case are the only people who make a difference to Nike's bottom line, I don't think there are that many of those people about. I'd be very surprised if there were enough of these people to increase Nike's profits to the extent that they'd be happy to contribute to Sneijder's wages over 5 years to ensure we sign him, especially considering he is already at a team sponsored by Nike.

What are you on about. There's fecking loads of them!

Already got my United "Champions" jersey but yes I'd buy a Sneijder jersey as well. Maybe from a site like soccertriads though.

Talking of shirt sales..

Wayne Rooney’s name was requested on more replica football shirts around the world in the 2010-11 season than that of any other player in the Premier League, according to official data just released.

The 25-year-old Manchester United striker hit the No1 spot for the first time in his career by leap-frogging the previous best seller, Fernando Torres, who drops to No2.

Sales of ‘Torres’ shirts for Liverpool and Chelsea combined in 2010-11 were lower than for Rooney alone.

Rooney’s success is all the more remarkable given that he announced he wanted to leave United in October – an act that might reasonably have been greeted by a drop in supporter loyalty. But that wasn’t the case. It seems Rooney’s sales were given a boost after agreeing to stay with the club.

Rooney is the first United player to top the sales charts since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007-08.

The full top 10 for 2010-11 are in the graphic below, as are the top three sellers for the previous three seasons.

The top 10 is published in the Premier League Season Review 2010-11, and is based on worldwide sales of official names and numbers, compiled by Sporting iD, which since 1993 has developed the technology behind the official players’ and replica products of the Barclays Premier League.

Total sales figures are never provided but it is understood that Rooney shirts sold a total of several hundred thousand to hit the No1 spot.

As this website reported exclusively in August last year (in reports linked here, and linked here), Manchester United have sold more official replica shirts worldwide in recent years than any other English Premier League club.

Typically United have sold between 1.2m and 1.5m shirts per year since 2005, with Liverpool next (900,000-plus in recent times, it is understood), followed by Arsenal and Chelsea.

The biggest few stars at each club typically account for a majority of the total sales between them – of those shirts sold with names.

The ‘big four’ clubs dominate the top 10 individual names in the data just released.

Rooney at No1 is joined in the top 10 by club-mate Javier Hernandez, whose Chicharita name is a new entry at No4, and by Ryan Giggs, at No10. (The Mexican forward’s fourth place debut is the highest new entry in the top 10 chart to date. Giggs appears in the top 10 for the first time).

Torres quite probably owes his No2 position to his time at Liverpool rather than Chelsea – because Liverpool simply sell more shirts, evidenced by Stevie Gerrard at No3 and Luis Suarez at No8.

Chelsea also have Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba at No7 and No8 (the same positions as last year).

Arsenal are represented by Robin Van Persie (a re-entry into the top 10 at No5) and Andrei Arshavin (at No9, down four places from last year).

Dropping out of the top 10 this time were Cesc Fabregas, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and Carlos Tevez.
