There is no way any of us can predict how successful a player will turn out to be once he is signed. the argument here is that 30 million for Sneijder, one of the world's best would be better value than 20 million for Goetze who might become one of the world's best a few years down the road,
No way is Sneijder coming. The fit is wrong in so many ways but particularly off the pitch. He's well known for being insufferably arrogant, he's not even popular in the Netherlands, and that sort of character won't fit in well at United.
How old is he? 23 is pretty young for a midfielder, especially one who has gone through a couple of serious injuries. He has mostly played well whenever he played this season. We know he can play exceptionally well, so that give us hope that he will play well at a consistent level in the future. Fletcher and Nani showed us that the performance will come in due time.
So Sneijder can't pass the ball? Everything goes through Sneijder, I wasn't talking about defending, I was talking about Sneijder being as good as Carrick is at his best known attribute (passing) but something tells me you knew that...

Perhaps in CAF transfer Muppet circles, but our last few purchases seem to suggest Fergie has embraced a new philosophy of scouting quality younger players, as a more reasonable way to do business in today's inflated Madrid/City/Chelsea market. If you have 30m to spend, you're probably going to help your club more in the long run by buying a Smalling, a Hernandez, a couple of DaSilvas, and an Obertan, than one Berba - and that's despite Berba's impact this year. If scouted properly, chances are there's far more value in players we barely know about than ones we're accustomed to seeing in the headlines.
I've always said this as well. But this site is infested with FMish muppets who think they have some sort of control on how the club spends its money, so its easier to just play along.
Sorry Raoul but I don't agree with your take on this; yes, United have an excellent scouting network and do make brilliant purchases but they also purchase outright established players too.
Solskjaer was signed well prior to Fergie pursuing Shearer in late summer of 1996.
Hernandez was bought in May 2010, Fergie then later courted Villa later in the summer. Turns out the cheaper choices both turned out splendid but regardless Fergie was looking for better immediate options...
Its pointless to compare players bought in past Fergie generations. Yes we bought loads of expensive players at the time. In today's market, I genuinely believe Fergie doesn't see any point competing with Chelsea, City, and Madrid, and has accordingly adjusted his strategy to dig deeper and find players who are younger, less publicized, and able to contribute for a long time.

No it doesn't mate, Fergie isn't as stoic as Wenger who clearly believes on his own myth that his great teams were built on cheap finds and therefore relies on this policy despite six trophyless years.
Chelsea believe in only buying established stars.
Fergie believes in playing the best player, whether it be from the youth team, a cheap gem or an expensive star, whoever is best for the team.
As much as Giggs has really excelled in the centre this year - we can't rely on him producing this type of form again come next season.
Sneijder would be a wise investment, however, I doubt we will splash the cash on him.

Let's see how much money he splashes on big name players this summer. I wouldn't discount him going for Sneijder as he's obviously a fantastic player.

Although Sneijder is a wonderful player, I think Modric would be better fit for United's style of play.

Can't believe people are against this signing. 26 (turning 27) is not a bad age at all and 30m for one of the top 5 players in his position in the world is well worth it. Scholes and Giggs will be gone and soon and signing a Sneijder would send out a message and he'd fit in well here imo.
Giggs and Scholes' impending retirements aren't necessarily tantamount to buying Sneijder. There are probably a few newer Sneijders, Robbens, etc who the club is actively tracking who would one day become better long term buys. I realize this flies in the face of the orgy of muppetry of speculating about big name players, but clubs do have more resources to dig deeper and find players none of us know about. People here were actively wanking over the likes of Ozil and Hamsik and in Hernandez, Fergie managed correctly go for a player that no one had heard of, who by all accounts may develop into an out and out world beater.

From Fergie's comments about Modric, I think he'll be our next signing also. Would be less of a gamble, but his attitude is decent also.
I don't think Scholes will continue after this season. If he does he will give us max one more year. Anderson,Gibson, Cleverly, Morrison, Pogba, Norwood,etc. are not ready to take over yet on a weekly basis & Fletch, Carrick, etc. won't fill the Scholes void as they have different roles to fill themselves. Sneijder (or similar) will help the transition. We need that big signing in the center of the park.
I think if SAF wants an established player who'll make an instant impact he usually tries to go for someone proven in the PL. I think we'd likely sign Modric over Sneijder, though I think we will get neither.
Even if Scholesly leaves, Giggs will have an influence on any youth players. Its he who seems to have taken the elders statesman leadership role

Question is what happens until 'long term' happens. We are lacking creativity in the center, someone who is comfortable on the ball, a good passer. It has cost us in games, and we can't rely on Giggs to do it week in, week out, cause he can't play every game. That one player could take us into a new level.
Our vision is fine, the way we do thing is fine, but you can't do a Wenger and refuse to accept the team's needs because it doesn't fit with your master plan. This may be one case when we need a more ready made player rather than a up and coming one. Partially because one of those type of signings, Anderson, hasn't progressed into a regular starting role like we hoped.
Why I have a feeling that there might be something in these Sneijder rumors is because usually when a big player is linked with us it is always at the same time when the said player is negotiating a new contract with his current club and just wants the upper hand but Sneijder negotiated a new contract recently and yet there are persistent rumors about us wanting to sign him and him confessing some kind of admiration for United. So maybe, just maybe...
I'm more confident in us signing Sneijder than any other big name we've been linked to in previous seasons.
