Westminster Politics

The latter, mostly. But a lot of that belief is based on a mythic understanding of this island's history.

The UK is only 100 years old but we act as though it is ancient. Parliamentary sovereignty was an English tradition, not a Scottish or an Irish one, but because England was the dominant nation in the Union the other countries had to suck it up. The Union between England and Scotland was brought about through rampant bribery and corruption. And we celebrate our stability whilst ignoring the English relationship with Ireland.

There's no good reason not to have one.

Constitutions get out-dated though and can be difficult to change 100 years later when something in it doesn't make sense now (see gun control in the US). The idea of a constitution based on precedence isn't necessarily bad as it keeps things updated but I think the main problem is there's no perfect solution.

What's the story here. Man and woman have consensual sexual relationship and he tries to help her with job interviews or offering her a position. Is that where MeToo is 2022?

It sounds like he lied and told her he'd get her a job if she had sex with him. Which of course doesn't exactly reflect well on her, but from him it would be plain grotty, like most other things he does.

Married minister, mayor and father of 4 (legitimate) children abuses position of power to have sexual affair with junior employee. Junior employee’s career opportunities are then curtailed because fellow senior minister suspected that the recommendation was inappropriate.

And yes, MeToo is here in 2020, just as it always was, calling out men in positions of power abusing that power to have sex with those they should be protecting.

On the Andrea Jenkyns thing, I really can't get with all the pearl clutching going on, there was a group of people shouting abuse, she gave them the finger. Too bad, if you dish it out, you're gonna get a little bit back.

Members of government should have higher standards of conduct. And it was hardly abuse, was it ? Not directed at her, in any case.

Abuse? They only started booing when she shouted something at them.

Good to see Jeremy Hunt is in-tune with the people. The solution to the cost of living crisis and ever spiralling inflation is zero tax cuts for the public but a corporation tax cut so Google and Amazon pay less. Great stuff.

Gordon Brown had to apologize on national TV for calling a bigot a bigot. This woman just flipped off multiple members of the public because she didn't like what they had to say. As an elected official, she should do much better.

Am I a nutter but why would you cut corporation tax at a time of relative low unemployment?

Seems to a bit of snobbery involved to me when people (not you) declare what 'the working man' thinks. It's not what they think themselves of course, because they're cleverer than that, obviously.

Same goes for the 'red wall'. You don't tend to hear people say 'I'm from the red wall', the red wall is always other, lesser, folk.

The other thing to remember is that Londoners voted for him to be mayor twice. If its only thick Northerners or the lesser working classes who could possibly fall for the tricks and vote for him how did that happen? Why don't we get the same vilification for the voters who made Johnson a political figure in Britain?

Because your fellow MPs are selfish morons who subscribe to the trickle down theory despite all evidence suggesting it doesn't work, including the Sri Lankan crisis that is ongoing as we speak resulting in senior politicians' houses being set on fire.

Duh, lads, don’t you know if you help the big corporations then they will in turn pay their staff more at every level, it’s classic trickle down economics and we know it will work because these corporations care.

Eh? You lot are really projecting some stuff here. How did we get on to a North v South thing? Do you think only northern people can be working class or something?

Because Thatcher did it which enabled Hunt to set up his own business. The only one of his pals at Uni to do so. Clearly policies from over 30 years ago are exactly what we need today to deal with stagnant wages, labour shortages, rampant inflation, the energy crisis and climate change.

Basically these cnuts haven’t got anything new other than their greatest hits. Soon Rishi will try to gaslight everyone by running on a platform that will include reversing the NI tax hike he fecking implemented.

It’s not thick northerners or thick southerners. There’s just an awful lot of people who don’t pay much attention to politics other than the top layer of media headlines. They’re not even necessarily thick, they just don’t perform any real analysis. But the same people are bloody determined to cast their vote (and fair enough). That one vote counts the same as someone who’s invested time into studying the situation. That’s why we get to a kind of style over substance situation that Boris typifies

Nice to see Dominic Cummings coming back out the woodwork. Either say names or give enough info for it to be made public through the 'proper' media or just shut up

This line of reasoning kind of works better with footballers than members of parliament.

She didn't even apologise though. She's just an undignified, badly educated knob.

Aren't politicians supposed to be experts at diplomacy? As in not having to use obscene sign language to communicate?

Providing there was no coercision and both are consenting adults this is a completely puritanical outlook that gives women no responsibility for their own decision making. She's had an affair with him because she's attracted to the power and the strings he can pull for her. She's got upset when she realised she didn't get the payout she thought the affair granted her. She has no one to blame but herself

If it comes out there was coercion/force/bullying I would retract that. But as there hasn't it's simply 2 consenting adults and nothing to see. Also she wants to slut shame Borris but wants to hide behind anonymity. It's bordering revenge porn.

I’ve seen some takes on here but :wenger:

Even in this take on events it further highlights the moral bankruptcy in the senior echelons of the Tory party and their readiness to abuse their positions of power for personal gain.

No mate, you're thinking about diplomats, politicians are the representatives of the people and some of them are going to be a bit flawed and that's ok.

I'm not a fan of the tories at all, but I can at least emphaise with someone that pushes back a bit of abuse. I don't really get the desire for MPs to be saintly / turn the other cheek figures all the time. If you give it out, you can expect a bit back.
