Westminster Politics

Tories saying that they might consider tax cuts in a bid to promise "jam tomorrow" to an electorate that hate them. The big problem is that a couple of of days ago it was revealed that it's to be a tax cut for the highest earners.

People who would benefit from that are not the highest earners at all. Plus, that isn’t really a tax cut - rate thresholds have always been increased in line with inflation and it’s only the Tories that have stopped this in recent years.

The strain on the Tory Government (and Party) at Westminster is now tangible. The two recent bye-election defeats put the tin-lid on it.
Sunak became PM by default, he's tried to make a fist of it but almost everything he touches or mentions melts away or explodes in his face, I actually feel sorry for him, as the roof caves in and his enemies within the Tory party stand by and watch and trying not to smirk...at least not too much, and his friends have all but disappeared over the horizon; he will look even more lonely and bereft as the GE date approaches.

The Labour Party, Starmer in particular, doesn't need to do anything until the election date is known, just keep their powder dry make sure everything they are going to promise nearer the election, is 'bullet and bomb proof' and is not holed below the water line by some disgruntled labour hack.

Just keep 'dodging and weaving' Sir Keir, let's all appreciate that 'double-shuffle' foot work.

Exactly that.
They all know that it is now extremely improbable that they can win the next election. As you say, any hope was blown away by the last 2 By Election results.

And fair play to Sir Kier Starmer who has turned the Labour Party around by moving it to the centre ground from the catastrophic shambles of the last election.

But I don't under estimate the Tories. I am sure that they have a few tricks up their collective sleeves and some dirt on Starmer.
But in reality they know it is lost. And they have been a total disaster for the country. And good luck to Labour because they are going to need it.
The country is in a complete mess and nothing is working.

£17k for 7 weeks is hardly news worthy.

That wasn't his wage, it was his severance pay. After 7 weeks. From a guy who has regularly criticised the severance pay of civil servants and sought to have it reduced when he was Minister of Government Efficiency.

Point is they waited to rehire him exactly how long it should take for him to be able to keep the severance pay. Even for 17k, they will go through loopholes.

Tory scums fecking over our Afghan translators and support time and time again. Just an utter disgrace how we’ve hung them out to dry. Many dead just for helping us out, and MOD can’t even spare money to answer emails. Meanwhile, Carrie managed to get some dogs out, yay.

Wonder how the Americans have done with this comparatively. Can’t be near as bad.

Actually I think it is as bad and maybe even worse

Whatever happens Labour should do a deal with the Lib Dems to get Electoral reform done, that's the biggest thing they can do for the country IMO, the politicians need to be accountable to the people which will never properly happen with FPTP, there's just too many safe seats that make some MP's untouchable no matter what they do

Sad state of affairs that we can’t protect our own. We’ve lost contact with every woman and the majority of guys who worked with our team. Those who got out did so via pot luck.

Yea absolutely but I don’t think it’s in labours interests.

In the US, it's they're immigrsants, we have no idea who they are, half of them are probably terrorists, BS of course but that's how a certain section push it

In the long run it probably is in Labour's interest, they'd likely be in power much more frequently becausethe hard left, which has always been their achilles heel, will be nullified to a certain extent, they same would pronbably apply to the Tories and their hard right side, so essentially there'd be more centrist policies overall, but you're right, in the short term it would probably cost them

Saw a few heartwarming bits over there from ones who’ve managed to join the army or marines, son of one guy even became a dog handler for the Chicago pd. we only get the “good” stories from fellas we worked with, but they seem to be integrated on a far better per unit basis (ie still have contact after getting stateside) than we have setup here. I’ve honestly not met a single Afghan since I became a civilian, which is partly my fault obviously but partly how our gov failed to get them out, and if they did, they become completely isolated from their units in a strange society they’ve never known. Sucks yours have immigran status, they should just get instant permanent residency and citizenship after a few years! These are not “immigrants” they are literally our brothers and sisters who risked their lives and those of their families to fight our enemies. /rant

I agree with you, but I think labour pass it in their 2022 conference then dropped it. Starmer is dead against it I think. One of the lads more into UK politics probably knows better. I just sigh and complain as it’s totally fecking hopeless. I ended up having to either vote for Corbyn or boris, and now the choice is starmer or Sunak. We’ve not had a sane viable left wing choice since I was able to vote, other than 2010.

When I could first vote it was a choice of Thatcher or Foot!

Joel Barnett of Barnett Formula fame was my MP in a safe Labour seat, he was nice unassuming fella, met him quite a few times, he said his formula was supposed to be a temporary thing and should have been abolished after a few years, they still have it!

Ah. The good old days... when at least you knew the left from the right.

A Tory MP arrested for rape.

How many of this sitting government have now been charged with something dodgy? This is becoming ridiculous.

Wish it was someone else. He was a surprising Tory voice of reason on our government's stance on the Israel/Gaza war:

Didn't he speak out to support the other MP who got in trouble last year related to an underage boy?

I assume nothing came of his assertion that it was a grave miscarriage of justice?
