Westminster Politics

The election results as far as Labour are concerned are just weird. Labour is a Leave party by their manifesto with a Leave leadership, but their Leave-leaning followers seem to be turning away from them, whilst those in Remain-leaning areas seem to be still in support.

I suppose at least both Leavers and Remainers are united in not believing they'll stand by their policies anyway.
 
We had a projected national share yet? Labour don't look ten points ahead so far.

Definitely a possibility but it's probably the only approach that would give a Labour majority (slim chance either way) so the risk is worth it. If the Tories become the Leave Party and Labour Remain the Tories will win hands down in my opinion.

From a remainer perspective i think it's beneficial that Labour carries with it the soft brexiteers and if people go to Lib Dem/Change/Greens then at least they're going to left leaning parties.

Pretty much this. The more Labour get away from this awful culture war shite between Remain & Leave the better they and the country will be(Basically don't listen to Paul Mason).

Greens do well on a local level and I voted for them but when it comes to national politics, I wouldn't because their policies are largely unachievable and proposed because they know they are unlikely to ever be in a position to enact them.

Yes, but I’ve always had them with me when voting. I’ve never had a situation where I didn’t receive it and I assumed in that situation you would show ID.

Whether it’s always been the case is not the point I’m making. I’m just surprised that you can tell someone your name and address to vote without the card.

That's been something that has led me to be reluctant to vote Green in the past too, but to be fair what party actually currently has achievable policies? Both Labour and the Tories are pursuing utter fantasies on their main policy point.

It’s never going to be a straight copy of national voting intentions in the locals. Lots of protest votes sure, but a lot of people actually know their local councilors.

Based on the results so fat i think the EU elections could be savage for Labour as well as the conservatives.

i wonder if we might see some compromise customs partnership waffle agreed on in an attempt to get the withdrawal agreement through before the elections to save face for both parties? - it gives May the excuse to go and it ensures corbyn does not have to wiggle out of any 2nd ref commitments

Meanwhile Tories won my seat easily. This is the woman who said pot holes were a good thing because it slows drivers down and there's no real need to fix them. :lol:

You're supposed to cross the box, sure, but as long as you mark the ballot paper in a way that clearly indicates your preference to vote for one candidate you can mark your ballot paper how ever you like.

EU elections are even more of a protest vote than locals. People often stick with a party because they like their local councillors, but no-one knows who their MEP is so its even more of a free hit. So, sure, if there is a sense that people are unhappy with Labour Id say they're likely to perform even worse in the euros than the locals.

The centre of UK and US politics are quite far apart and it's not clear to me what position proud UK centrists would take if they were in fact American. Would they suddenly not believe in free healthcare for all?

The idea that no good has come from extreme politics or policy seems a very ill thought statement to me, only extreme policies have really changed much for the better. It also pitched centrism as restricting change which is probably a better slogan for Change UK

I think you missed the point, most of our historical moments in politics have originated from extremism not centrism. The right for women to vote and most equality legislation in fact were not born out of mainstream centrism they were born from extremist positions. 'Nutters' indeed.

At this point it'll take an extremist party to bother to deal with climate change.

Labour Candidate won North of Tyne mayoral election, he's a Corbynite but turnout was only around 30%, seems a total waste of time to me
 
Lib Dems are at my pub in city centre celebrating currently. You would honestly think they just won a general election the way they're getting on.

Not sure - It’s the climate deniers who are slowing meaningful political action. The mainstream scientific view is what shapes climate change thinking, not the nutters although nuts do better PR. I’m just not sure we have the same understanding of the word extremism. I meant more doctrinal extremes like communism and fascism, the sort of ideologies that attracts people of a particularly rigid or black or white way of thinking. Some brexiters show a similar rigidity.

So the most pro-Brexit of the major parites - the Tories - lose nearly 1300 councillors. The biggest gains come from the most anti-Brexit of the major parties - the Lib Dems. UKIP also lost.

And yet somehow, the govt and certain papers are trying to paint this as a vote for "gerronwivit" and anger at the Great Brexit Betrayal. It beggars belief.

Another way of looking at it - Tories lost record amounts of seats... and Labour still somehow failed to makes any gains. In the ninth year of opposition.
 
I have heard Tories blame May entirely for their absolute disaster of an election.

I have seen Labour spin the fact that they lost over 100 to be not a bad night.

The country still haven’t got a clue what they actually want, the Lib Dem’s are rightfully celebrating.

They are to a certain extent. When you are the official opposition and you're facing such an incompetent executive it's utterly amazing not just to fail to capitalise on the failures, but to actually go backwards yourself. I mean ffs 2015 was a disaster for Labour locally as well as being a high point for the Tories. To continue to lose seats and councils from that low point, against this Tory party, after nine years in opposition is a terrible showing by any measure.
