Westminster Politics

Trump is favourite to win the next US election, so we could have a Trump / Truss partnership leading the free world. With Elon Musk pulling the strings. Kill me now.

If he gets a lower % of votes than Theresa May got 3 and half a years ago, I think that would be a very big deal given how unpopular May was at the time, the fact that so many MPs are on the government payroll etc.

I still find the fact that he is being credited in some quarters with achievements that aren't actually achievements, the result of actions that he took etc., to be hugely frustrating, but I should be used to that now. People like Alan Sugar who were scathing of Johnson after the 2016 EU referendum become adoring supporters a few years ago.

I absolutely love how tight the should/shouldn't vote is, and how spread the successors vote is. The Tories are absolutely fecked.

may got 63%... anything less than 50% hes gone so yeah it would be very tight margins / uncomfortable... that said the man is shameless and he simply wont care if he survives by one vote

Think you underestimate the chances of a hung parliament.

Knowing what we know now, the confidence vote excepting (although it seems likely he will not lose), a hung parliament could well be a possible outcome.
If Johnson wins tonight, a number of Tory MPs could defect to the Liberals in order to keep their seats.
The Tories will have a toxic leader and lose many votes.
Labour and Liberals will gain and maybe be able to form a coalition.
I just hope the Tory MPs are stupid enough to give him their backing so he will stumble and bumble on as an increasingly lame duck PM.

Probably best if he stays, but given the Tory members are likely to pick someone like Liz Truss as his replacement, its kind of a win/win either way.

I almost can’t believe they’d pick Truss. But I’ve been pretty bad at predicting what Tory MPs will do in the last few years. I agree that someone like Truss, who, let’s be honest, would be way way above her level of competency, would be a good outcome with the next election in mind.

“Its time to draw a line under it and move on as a country” should be the Tory Party headline.

Boris will win the vote.

He will also sack Nadine in the next few weeks imo

Didn’t Tory party HQ recently insult and deride their own MSPs in Holyrood (a pretty big open goal for the SNP) including Ross himself (who is both an MP and MSP / leader of the Scottish Tories)? Johnson is completely toxic in Scotland, so all 6 of their Scottish MPs voting against him is surely a no brainer.

Nah he rewards loyalty. Doesn’t care one bit what a car crash she is.

I was in two minds on this initially. Him going is great, but then will we get stuck with a Tory who’s likely going to feck up less and win a majority in two years when everyone has forgotten about this. Is it better to just let Boris mess things up so bad that there is no hope for them.

The other part of me thinks there isn’t really anyone capable of leading the party anyway. Without that annoying “man of the people” vibe that Boris somehow has, there’s far less wiggle room for them.

My conclusion is it’s best to get rid of him and deal with whatever consequences comes after.

As an outsider I have no idea why people think they need Boris in charge for the Tories to avoid any more feck ups. Every rumoured successor is just as bad and without the fabled middle class charm. it can only be worse. There is no comeback if he is forced to go.

Yeah I agree. It’s the definition of “overthinking it”. Just get him out.

I don't get why non-Conservatives want Boris to continue - he's only going to lie to you for another two years or so. Any possible replacement is equally if not more incompetent than he is. Why would you want him to run the country into the ground for the next two years in the vague hope that the Tories lose the next GE. Get rid asap.

I love how Nadine Dorries must have watched Diane Abbotts performances in both the 2017 and 2019 elections and simply said.

'Hold my beer cup'

I can't speak for anybody else, but I'm sort of vaguely hoping for Boris to win tonight. Quickly followed by Starmer getting a fine and resigning along with Raynor, and Labour electing a sensible and likeable leader to take them into the GE.

However, I don't know who I'd like that leader to be and I'm certainly not optimistic.

I do not rate Starmer or the Labour leadership either. There are a lot of very poor politicians around.
