Westminster Politics

Not the same thing.

Welfare is the countries second largest expenditure so there's nothing wrong with trying to make it better.

It's very much the other side of the same coin. Taxation is by far the government's primary income so there's nothing wrong with trying to make it better

When I hear Oliver Dowden I instantly think he’s a snivelling little worm but I can’t remember what it was he did. Apart from being a Tory obviously.

He is not nice to work for. The sort of person who is very adept at ensuring he gets no blame for the decisions he takes.

Not the same thing.

Welfare is the countries second largest expenditure so there's nothing wrong with trying to make it better.

Pensions take up 42% of the total spend: https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/gove...rticles/howisthewelfarebudgetspent/2016-03-16.

But since old people vote Tory, it is much better to go after disability and unemployment benefits (16% and 1% of the total spending respectively).

Also it would be nice for the Government to work on dealing with health inequalities, structural racism and discrimination in society. That would make people live longer, healthier lives, meaning less needs to be spent on disability benefit.

Thread:

Benefit fraud is costing the taxpayer > 5 Billion £ / yr. How on earth can somebody criticise any action to bring this figure down?

Because almost all Government agencies have become an absolute nightmare to work through since this government came into power in 2010 and disabled people for instance have had to go through humiliating and ridiculous processes to prove that they are actually disabled.

Why does he get to go back to the back beaches and not get sacked completely?

Love how he talks sarcastically about reading the GFA as if its a ridiculous suggestion while he is one of the ministers who is in charge of negotiating an agreement which has to involve said agreement.

He’s just pathetic!

And the BBC was bending over backwards to giv him a platform again!

Because he was elected by his constituents as MP, whereas he was hired by rishi as justice secretary/deputy prime minister, I suspect.

I think we both would agree that the real target of the advert is not fraudsters but the pieces of shit that vote Tory.

Tax fraud and tax evasion are not the same thing as wanting different taxation rules. That post was mixing the two up.

Pensions are separated out of the figure I quoted. Welfare including pensions is the biggest expenditure the country has, but pensions are quite hard to fiddle. You're either old or you're not!

Yes, but that’s a separate issue. That’s not benefit fraud.

It isn't a separate issue.

The entire discourse around this is that of scroungers stealing our hard earned cash and the atmosphere they have managed to create around it is an incredibly hostile one, whereby even genuinely severely disabled people have to jump through incredible hoops to prove they are disabled and are therefore sucked in to the entire ordeal as well.

Its similar to how this country often views immigration. Its generally viewed through an almost entirely negative window and like we're doing the migrants a favour to allow them in.

Is this specifically windrush? No. But a country that doesn't have such an aggressive attitude towards migrants probably doesn't end up with dozens of people wrongly deported and hundreds more with their lives ruined.

I agree about the narrative that’s pushed out there. And the steps government have taken to make it incredibly difficult for valid claimants to get money. I think we need some sort of independently verified stats on real benefit fraud and if, in isolation, it does amount to the figures thrown around.

And more than likely a much healthier economy too.

Sounds like Dominic Raab operates in what use to be called the Theory 'X' Management Style, which basically consists of kicking everyone's ar** everyday, whether they need it or not... surprisingly it can work in some desperate "all hands to the pumps" situations, but only for a short time.

Perhaps he feels the Tory government has reached that stage.

I don't follow uk politics in much detail, but that jacob rees mogg fella seems to be one of the cuntiest cnuts I've ever listened to. Every single time I've watched him speak, he has that attitude that everyone else around him is a dumb pleb, how can anyone vote for someone like this?

We have a lot of stupid, selfish fecks in this country that's why.

I had been saying that in this thread. I just hope he becomes UK's prime minister

A lot of people like being dumb plebs, they revel in their overlords taking care of things.

And it's this trail of thought that'll lead to the Tories staying in.
Not if you live in the south. Alot of those seats are contested by tory and lib dem. A vote for Labour is a wasted vote there.

He's one to stay up for at the next election, his majority is looking pretty shaky.
