What do we think Fergie makes of all this?

When Fergie announced his retirement in May 2013, just over two years ago, this is what he said about the squad he was leaving behind...

"The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one."

Two years on, and that squad has been totally ripped apart..

Just six first team players remain (Smalling/Jones/Carrick/Valencia/Young/Rooney) and of those only two are cemented in the First XI. We've also brought in 13 new players (and counting) at a cost somewhere in the region of £250 million pounds.

So what do we think Fergie is making of all this right now? Surely he would never in his wildest dreams thought the turnaround of his squad would be so vast, so ruthless, and so quick?

He's probably still wondering why Giggs isn't playing in the centre of a two man midfield.

Fergie would have got rid of Rooney, and probably most others. He let his squad age by the time he retired, but was never afraid of clearing player outs.

I imagine he would be saddened somewhat. I cant see him being happy with van gaal. Nog that he would go public with any gripes.

Would anybody really disagree with any of the offloads in that picture?

Imagine he will be disappointed in the club (Ed) but maybe understand that each manager wants to do things his own way.

With LVG I can imagine him thinking what is taking place is bold and brave but not the direction he'd go down.

He will be telling everyone sitting next to him how he new Rooney was finished and people should have listened.

Tbf, he is probably quite confused about all these midfielders we've bought.

I feel like we're ignoring the really big issues. Like how long will it take for a Journalist to write something entitled "Mata Memphis Martial -- MMM and Why Martial matters".

Fergie would have planned to build his team around Pogba. Losing Pogba was a huge blow......Fergie would also realize that seem as Moyes made such a mess of overhauling the squad that Van Gaal really had a massive massive job to do and I think he has done a great job of getting rid of the so many passangers that Fergie couldn't get rid of

Of the 27 players Van Gaal has axed...most of those players are either way passed their sell by date or were only deadwood here

The only player Van Gaal sold so far that I would have preferred if he kept is Kagawa. I rated Welbeck too but he never really figured out what his best position was and that has not helped his career at all

So uncalled for! This is such a disrespectful remark of the great man who brought you the joy being a United fan for over two decades. It reflects on how you think of Fergie and it's not my place to criticise. In my opinion though, even if we were still playing Scholes and Giggsy and Fergie was still in charge, United would still be challenging title year on year out and the talk of the day would be "will RvP bag 20 goals this season?"

Well for a start, he was bullshitting about the youth set up.

It's a known fact it's in the shitter and that the club are looking to re model it.

He'll be sitting on his legacy, watching it grow into a mountain.

How we all miss him :(

Fortunately we still have Nick Powell and Antonio Valencia.

Fergie would have strolled to the title in the last 2 seasons while spending a fraction of what we've ended up spending while not having to get rid of half the squad.

We really needed to take the squad apart - I really applaud LVG for that.....he just doesn't seem to be replacing them!

Probably wishing he could manage this squad to title #21 in May

You do realise Fergie didn't win the league every season, right?

*throws bucket of cold water over redevil*

He's wondering why Rooney is still playing up front when he should have been got rid of 2 years ago

I will always wonder how United would look like right now if Ferguson got the financial backing that LVG is getting right now.

I imagine he would be saddened somewhat. I cant see him being happy with van gaal. Nog that he would go public with any gripes.

I reckon the two he'd be most upset with are Welbeck and Januzaj. Just because of the whole 'United identity thing'.

Possibly Hernandez too, just because he seemed to always like, and rate, the lad.

Bore off.

He was also ruthless when needed, but it's likely some players would be in a better shape had they not been managed by Moyes.

The deadwood sold have been still way better than record signing of the like of ADM. At the end of the day, it's who's managing the players when they could play as a team to challenge title and it's what really counts

Isn't that exactly what people wanted back then even? Its been a couple years now that people have wanted this side rebuilt...... and even when its happening all we get is complaining. Honestly I want them to sign the RIGHT players not just anyone

In fairness the side he left behind were champions and was a bad red card and one or two players away from being a proper contender for the CL. Sure the defense was aging but it had the next wave of Smalling, Jones and Rafael was there ready to step up.

The ONLY thing I wish Fergie had done any different (aside from NOT putting that bumbling idiot Moyes in charge) would have been to ship Rooney back to Everton (or Newcastle or West Ham or any shite continental side)

I agree. Seems to me Adnan is a goner. No one ever recovers from a loan move at Utd. Sad times really

Yeah there's no need to be sarcastic. You do realise LVG hasn't proven anything yet at United do you?

And before you point out that Fergie took some time to prove himself... But there's no comparison, as Fergie hadn't the benefit if taking over some champions players. LvG has all the money he wants and extreme freedom in the transfer window but it looks like he prefers to buy and sell without much well thought plan. It's worrying where we will be like this season.

On a more serious note, I'd love to see him take a tilt at the title with the squad we've got now. He'd want another forward or two, certainly, but he'd get a lot out of what we already have, particularly the midfield. He'd make a good back four out of Darmian, Smalling, Jones and Shaw, too.

No would be the harsh truth. I'm not even sure Fergie was right about our youth set-up, looking at reserve/academy seasons since he left.
Haven't our youth teams continued to win or get close to winning each year?

And I refuse to believe the following players could not make our current squad a lot stronger.

RVP
Hernandez
Evra
Kagawa
Welbeck
Rafael
Nani
